Book excerpt: This sweeping study surveys nearly a century of diverse American views on the relationship between the United States and the Canadian provinces, filling out a neglected chapter in the history of aggressive U.S. expansionism. Until the mid-nineteenth century, many believed that Canada would ultimately join the United States. Stuart provides an insightful view of the borderland, the Canadian-American frontier where the demographics, commerce, and culture of the two countries blend. Originally published in 1988. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, which led to the settlement of the Canadian boundary dispute, was instrumental in maintaining peace between Great Britain and the United States. Jones analyzes the events that aggravated relations to show the affect of America's states' rights policy, and he concludes that the two countries signed the treaty because they considered it the wisest alternative to war, not because of the often-claimed strategic distribution of money. Alvin Laroy Duckett chronicles Forsyth’s achievements portraying him as one of Georgia’s most versatile and accomplished politicians. Forsyth was elected Attorney General of Georgia at the age of 28, the first public office he held. He went on to serve as U.S. Representative, Senator, and as a Minister to Spain. He was a leader among a group of southern republicans that helped to win the presidency for Andrew Jackson. Forsyth fought nullification, oversaw the government’s response to the Amistad case, and led the pro-removal reply to the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Though he worked primarily at the federal level, Forsyth also contributed greatly to the development of Georgia during his career.
