This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: C, , language: English, abstract: This essay is an analysis of the impacts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on economic growth and economic development performance in South Africa. It explores whether economic and social progresses result from the most popular football event, or if these are generally overrated. Personal research has been conducted to examine the opinion of other people in regards to numerous questions concering the economics of this tournament. Firstly, it is examined that South Africa's investments, primarily in the construction and infrastructure sector, have short-term effects on the country's economic performance in terms of reduced unemployment and improved factors of production leading to economic growth, yet people criticized, that government investments were made into wrong projects instead of education, health care or adequate housing to stabilize social conditions. Poverty remains at the same excessive level, maintaining a persistent overall low state of welfare. The second phase, involving a booming tourism industry in the country during the event, also indicates a short-term source of job creation and a significant increase in aggregate output. A benefiting short-term inflation might emerge due to high demand in the accommodation industry. Lastly, there may arise a future growth in foreign investments in South Africa because of a better global percecption of the country, leading to longer lasting potential in economic growth and development, yet harder to identify and less tangible. In conclusion, the economic impacts of World Cups do not necessarily result in the way as expected. There exist some positive short-term effects on the economy, but not to a great extent. If South Africa's tourism arrivals continue to grow and international corporations become attracted to this emerging market in the future, which is of course not perfectly predictable, there will be significant advanced performances in relation to economic growth and development in the country.
Book Synopsis South Africa's World Cup by : Eddie Cottle
Download or read book South Africa's World Cup written by Eddie Cottle and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book provides a critically informed analysis of the impact and legacy of mega-sporting events through the lens of South Africa's 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and its associated developmental paradigm. It challenges mainstream thinking and mega-event praise singers by providing concrete evidence to show that this sporting spectacular was little more than a front for massive accumulation and extraction of wealth, alongside increased sporting and socio-economic inequality. Contributors to this volume examine the sports accumulation-complex, economic promises, construction companies, trade unions, strikes, international solidarity, the struggle to trade, sex work, climate change, as well as case studies on the building of individual soccer stadiums. Eddie Cottle is the regional policy and campaign officer of the Building and Wood Workers' international (BWI) for Africa and the Middle East. This is a timely reminder that the 2010 World Cup nation-building illusion in fact disguised a reality of greed, elite enrichment and nepotism - and left us with a terrible financial hangover.' Terry Bell, columnist at Independent Newspapers, Business Report, and independent economic/labour analyst Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Circus Maximus by : Andrew Zimbalist
Download or read book Circus Maximus written by Andrew Zimbalist and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the headlines of the world's most beloved sporting events Brazil hosted the 2016 men's World Cup at a cost of $15 billion to $20 billion, building large, new stadiums in cities that have little use for them anymore. The projected cost of Tokyo's 2020 Summer Olympic Games is estimated to be as high as $30 billion, much of it coming from the public trough. In the updated and expanded edition of his bestselling book, Circus Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and the World Cup, Andrew Zimbalist tackles the claim that cities chosen to host these high-profile sporting events experience an economic windfall. In this new edition he looks at upcoming summer and winter Olympic games, discusses the recent Women's World Cup, and the upcoming men's tournament in Qatar. Circus Maximus focuses on major cities, like London, Rio, and Barcelona, that have previously hosted these sporting events, to provide context for future host cities that will bear the weight of exploding expenses, corruption, and protests. Zimbalist offers a sobering and candid look at the Olympics and the World Cup from outside the echo chamber.
Book Synopsis International Handbook on the Economics of Mega Sporting Events by : Wolfgang Maennig
Download or read book International Handbook on the Economics of Mega Sporting Events written by Wolfgang Maennig and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Olympics to the World Cup, mega sporting events are a source of enjoyment for tens of thousands, but can also be a source of intense debate and controversy. This insightful new Handbook addresses a number of central questions, including: How are host cities selected and under what economic conditions? How are these events organized, and how is local resistance overcome? Based on historical and empirical experience, what are the pitfalls for the organizers of these events? What are the potential economic benefits, including any international image effects? How can the costs be minimized and the benefits maximized for host cities and countries? How do these mega events impact the challenges of globalization and what is their environmental legacy? Compiled and edited by two internationally renowned sports economists, the expert contributions elaborate on the specific mechanisms of the bid processes, analyse the determining factors of winning bids, and illustrate how to construct future bid campaigns. Underpinned by case studies from four continents and by theoretical considerations, the reasons for seemingly systemic cost overruns are explored and analysed, as are the effects on national and regional employment and income, property values, non-traditional economic variables (such as psychological and marketing benefits) and urban branding and transformation. The Handbook also reflects on important elements of design of the games in order to better plan, prepare and allocate resources – including, for example, sustainability issues and the use of campaigns to secure positive perceptions. This book provides an up-to-date analysis of the financing and economic impact of mega sporting events, as well as a full discussion of how host cities can maximize the benefits from their experience. As such, it will prove a fascinating read for academics, students, researchers and policymakers with an interest in economics and public sector economics generally, and more specifically, in the economics of sport.

Book Synopsis Selling the Five Rings by : Robert Knight Barney

Book excerpt: The only volume available that explores the winter games as a whole, The Winter Olympics is invaluable reading for understanding the movement's roots as well as the contemporary issues surrounding the Games. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games were an extravaganza of global proportions, yet the winter games have not always enjoyed such favor or prominence. Dating retroactively to 1924 but not officially part of the Olympic program until 1928, the winter games have had an uneasy history. For the first fifty years controversies raged continually over whether the commercialism and professionalism in skiing, ice skating, and hockey were compatible with the Olympic ideal of amateurism and even whether winter sports should continue to be part of the Olympic program of international sport. Avery Brundage, president of the IOC from 1952 to 1972, was an outspoken critic of what he called the "Frostbite Follies." Opposition to the Winter Olympics was so great that the IOC Executive Board in 1964 considered eliminating the Games but eventually voted to continue them only through 1972.
Book Synopsis Signaling in the Context of Mega Sporting Events by : Adrian Lustenberger

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation of countries to compete fiercely to host a mega sporting event, despite its ambiguous economic effects, is one of the mysteries in the economics of sports. So far, this issue has been tackled empirically mostly by impact studies. In this thesis, however, a content analysis was applied on the basis of the concept of signaling, which was theoretically approached as an investment-oriented instrument to leverage the economic impact and the economic legacy of a mega sporting event using the media hype occurring in the context of Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup. These effects are largely unexplored. It was the author's intention to examine to what extent and in what manner the international print media collected and published signals of the South African government addressed to the international readership - primarily potential investors and tourists - throughout the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The quantitative assessment of the signaling-related articles shows that all newspapers included in the analysis have published the largest part of their signaling-related articles on system critics. The qualitative assessment reveals that positively evaluated articles outweigh negatively evaluated articles. Furthermore, a time series analysis indicates that rather skeptical and thus negative coverage has turned into positive coverage throughout the tournament. Based on these results, an enhancement of the host country's awareness level as well as an improvement of its image can be expected, allowing South Africa to hope for long- term economic benefits. However, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, leaving doubts about the economic effects of hosting a mega sporting event.

Download or read book South Africa 2010 written by Swantje Allmers and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contribution provides an ex post analysis of the economic impacts of the two most recent single-country World Cups (WCs), Germany 2006 and France 1998. Based on macroeconomic indi-cators, the experiences of these WCs appear to be in line with existing empirical research on large sporting events and sports stadiums, which have rarely identified significant net economic benefits. Of more significance are the novelty effects of the stadiums, and “intangible effects” such as the image effect for the host nations and the feel-good effect for the population. The experiences of former WCs provide a context for analysing the scope and limits for South Africa 2010. Like previous host countries, South Africa might have to cope with difficulties such as the under-use of most WC-stadiums in the aftermath of the tournament. On the other hand, this paper examines a handful of arguments why South Africa might realise larger economic benefits than former hosts of WCs, such as the absence of the northern-style 'couch potato effect' and the absence of negative crowding-out effects on regular tourism. Furthermore, the relative scarcity of sport arenas in South Africa might induce a larger positive effect than in countries with ample provision of sports facilities. In addition, against the backdrop of continuous declines in South African poverty since 2001, the novelty effect of new stadiums might be of special importance. Finally, the innovative South African ambitions to use stadiums with 'signature architecture' as a tool for urban development or to generate external effects for the regional economy are different from former WCs.
Book Synopsis New South African Review 1 by : Doreen Atkinson
Download or read book New South African Review 1 written by Doreen Atkinson and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is South Africa on a long-term decline? The New South African Review revives the tradition of critical, analytical scholarship developed by the South African Review in the 1970s and 1980s. Accessible to a wide readership and drawing upon authors from well beyond academia, its objective is to be informative, discursive and, at times, downright provocative. It seeks to provide contemporary comment and engage with current controversies. The first volume in the series, 2010: Development or Decline? ranges widely across the implications of the international crisis for the economy, the threats to our fragile ecology of present economic strategies, through to the state of the ANC and the public service, issues around service delivery, migration, HIV-Aids, land reform, crime, the sexual behaviour of our youth, and much more. Posing the provocative question of whether South Africa is embarking upon a long-term decline, the volume simultaneously argues the potential for a society premised upon social equality, social coherence and sustainability. This collection will appeal to both national and international audiences interested in engaging with the multiple dilemmas and challenges facing contemporary South Africa
