Book excerpt: "Before planeswalkers, before the five colors of magic, before history itself, the plane of Dominaria was ruled by the Thran. They built machines and artifacts, the likes of which have never since been seen. But amid this civilization, a shadow took root, one that would stretch its arms across space and time: the hideous evil of Phyrexia was born. And in its wake arose a mighty conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, a battle of titanic engines that scarred an entire plane and that altered the course of history. So begins the saga of the brothers' war"--P. [4] of cover.

Download or read book Artifacts written by Mary Anna Evans and published by Poisoned Pen Press Inc. This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faye Longchamp has lost nearly everything except for her quick mind and a grim determination to hang onto her ancestral home, Joyeuse, a moldering plantation hidden along the Florida coast. No one knows how Faye’s great-great-grandmother Cally, a newly freed slave barely out of her teens, came to own Joyeuse in the aftermath of the Civil War. No one knows how her descendants hung onto it through Reconstruction, world wars, the Depression, and Jim Crow, but Faye has inherited the island plantation—and the family tenacity. When the property taxes rise beyond her means, she sets out to save Joyeuse by digging for artifacts on her property and the surrounding National Wildlife Refuge and selling them on the black market. A tiny bit of that dead glory would pay a year’s taxes. A big valuable chunk of the past would save her home forever. But instead of potsherds and arrowheads, she uncovers a woman’s shattered skull, a Jackie Kennedy-style earring nestled against its bony cheek. Faye is torn. If she reports the forty-year-old murder, she’ll reveal her illegal livelihood, thus risking jail and the lose of Joyeuse. She doesn’t intend to let that happen, so she probes into the dead woman’s history, unaware that the past is rushing up on her like a hurricane across deceptively calm Gulf waters...

Book Synopsis Analysis of Artifacts from Four Duke Point Area Sites, Near Nanaimo, B.C. by : Rebecca Anne Wukasch Murray
Download or read book Analysis of Artifacts from Four Duke Point Area Sites, Near Nanaimo, B.C. written by Rebecca Anne Wukasch Murray and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using artifact data collected and analyzed in 1978 from 4 sites in the Duke Point area and comparable data from other sites in the southern Gulf of Georgia region, it is demonstrated that perceived differences in artifact assemblages, particularly on a presence/absence basis, are not as clear-cut as they were once considered to be. Rather, the significant differences lie in the relative frequencies and percentages of certain artifact types. The utility of the current three-part framework for archaeological analysis, which has encouraged the interpretation of migration, diffusion, and independent invention to explain the origins and temporal variation of culture in the southern Gulf of Georgia region, is critically examined.

This book provides the guidance and relevant historical context students need to see relics as evidence of long-past events and society. Artifacts from Ancient Rome is a unique social history that explores major aspects of daily life in a long-ago era via images of physical objects and historical information about these items. This book also affords "hands-on training" on how to approach primary sources. The author—a historian also trained as an archaeologist—begins by explaining the concept of using artifacts to understand and "see" the past and providing a primer for effectively analyzing artifacts. Entries on the artifacts follow, with each containing an introduction, a description of the artifact, an explanation of its significance, and a list of further sources of information. Readers of the book will not only gain a composite impression of daily life in ancient Rome through the study of artifacts from domestic life, religion, war, transportation, entertainment, and more, but will also learn how to best understand and analyze primary sources for learning.
Book Synopsis Misfits & Hybrids: Architectural Artifacts for the 21st-Century City by : Ferda Kolatan
Download or read book Misfits & Hybrids: Architectural Artifacts for the 21st-Century City written by Ferda Kolatan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary cities are shaped by the unlikely adjacencies of objects that are vastly different in kind, origin, and scale: buildings, infrastructure, and other urban components that over time accumulate into mismatched configurations. However, despite the ubiquity of these oddities and their impact on the city, we rarely give them much consideration. In Misfits & Hybrids, Ferda Kolatan explores the untapped potential in these unexpected conditions for a new kind of architecture. A diverse array of projects, developed in Kolatan’s design studios at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design, illustrates how hybrid artifacts can reveal the often overlooked cultural, socio-political, and material histories of a site, fostering design tactics invested in reinventing the existing. Set within the cosmopolitan megacities of Istanbul, Cairo, and New York, the projects are conceived as real fictions, conjuring novel narrative, aesthetic, and representational forms to reflect the pluralistic postindustrial city.
