Book excerpt: This Tiny Folio book highlights the works of The National Gallery, London, which has one of the most magnificent--and the most beloved--collections of paintings in the world. Founded in 1824, the National Gallery houses a rich and comprehensive range of European painting from the Middle Ages to the 1920s. Among the works represented in this colorful and compact survey of the Gallery's collection are masterpieces by Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cézanne, as well as some lesser-known delights. Located on Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London, the original Wilkins Building has recently been extended by the handsome new Sainsbury Wing, which contains some of the world's greatest paintings.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art Treasures of London Painting Although many handbooks to the public art galleries of London have been published during the last few years, no concise guide has yet appeared which displays at a glance their vast but scattered wealth. It is impossible for the art-lover to discover the where abouts of all the existing examples of any particular School or master in London without the loss Of much time. And unless he is able to collate a score of catalogues (some out of print and many out of date) the task is almost hopeless. This volume consists of three parts (i.) Plans of the galleries with general information. (il) A chronological list of artists arranged according to the order of their schools, including classified lists of all the pictures representing their works to be seen within the London area. The brief biographical notes are in no sense intended to be exhaustive, but will be found useful as a rapid memory aid. (iii.) A complete index to the names of the artists. Book excerpt: - The ultimate insider's guide to London's hidden art treasures for locals and experienced travelers - Features interesting and unusual places not found in traditional travel guides - Part of the international 111 Places series with over 650 titles and 3.8 million copies in print worldwide - Appeals to both the local market (more than 8.9 million people call London home) and the tourist market (around 30 million people visit London every year!) - Fully illustrated with 111 full-page color photographs The hidden art of London is for the ever-curious roamer of both the back streets and the familiar places you never quite see - churches, gardens, graveyards, pubs. What little garden finds the poet John Keats sitting in the corner of a bench? Which abandoned building tells the story of a great Roman Road? There are always marvels hidden in plain view - the back corner of a museum containing great sculptures by Rodin or the naked, street-corner golden boy, who marks where the Great Fire of London finally petered out. A famous literary cat or a painting by Hogarth on the bend of a stairs in an ancient hospital. This guidebook takes you exploring London beyond its most famous sights to find the art we have never quite noticed before: the hidden statues, paintings, and murals that have escaped from the official museums, and often live unnoticed lives in tucked away places.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art Treasures of London Painting Although many handbooks to the public art galleries of London have been published during the last few years, no concise guide has yet appeared which displays at a glance their vast but scattered wealth. It is impossible for the art-lover to discover the whereabouts of all the existing examples of any particular school or master in London without the loss of much time. And unless he is able to collate a score of catalogues (some out of print and many out of date) the task is almost hopeless. This volume consists of three parts: (I.) Plans of the galleries with general information. (II) A chronological list of artists arranged according to the order of their schools, including classified lists of all the pictures representing their works to be seen within the London area. The brief biographical notes are in no sense intended to be exhaustive, but will be found useful as a rapid memory aid. (III.) A complete index to the names of the artists. The visitor or student who wishes to examine all the examples illustrative of a particular school will turn to that School in Section II., and will there find every picture placed as far as possible in chronological order, with a reference to its gallery and the room in which it is hung. If he wishes to see the works of one artist, a reference to the Index will give the page in the Schools. When possible the pictures have been dated, and if the critics have differed with regard to the attributions attention is drawn to their suggested amendations. The University Galleries at Oxford and Cambridge cannot be said to form part of the metropolitan area, but they are so close to London in every way that to omit them would have been an error. At first it was intended that oil-paintings only should be included, but, as this rule would have excluded one of the chief glories of the British School, water-colour drawings have been added, together with a few chalk and pencil drawings (except in the foreign schools), miniatures, early mosaics, and several pieces of tapestry. Although these items are not exhaustively catalogued, I believe the references include almost everything of value. In conclusion, I only hope that some art-loving and public-spirited millionaire will, after a study of this volume, remove some of the obvious deficiencies amongst the Art Treasures of London. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The set owned by Sir George Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery. Scharf has annotated and interleaved these pages with manuscripts and letters received, newspaper clippings, and printed pamphlets, in effect producing an unpublished corrected and enlarged second edition. In a fair copy of a letter to John Murray (1855 March 16), Scharf cites numerous errata and inaccuracies in Waagen. Scharf had access to the great historic homes and private collections of art in England and based his revisions on first-hand knowledge. Newspaper clippings record the loss, dispersal or sale of the collections originally surveyed by Waagen. Letters received from connoisseurs, collectors, and artists include Lord Cowper, Lady Louisa Egerton, Frederic George Stephens, W.A. Scott Robertson, George Redford, the Earl of Ellesmere, R.S. Holford, and Sir Charles Lock Eastlake. Printed materials include "A Catalogue of the Orleans' Italian pictures ..." (London, 1798) and the text of Scharf's paper on the paintings in the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of London (1862 Nov. 20). The first volume of the set contains a dedication to Scharf from the translator, Lady Eastlake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overdue study of a groundbreaking event, this is the first book-length examination of the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857. Intended to rehabilitate Manchester's image at a heady time of economic prosperity, the Exhibition became a touchstone for aesthetic, social, and economic issues of the mid-nineteenth century. Reverberations of this moment can be followed to the present day in the discipline of art history and its practice in public museums of Europe and America. Highlighting the tension between art and commerce, philanthropy and profit, the book examines the Exhibition's organization and the presentation of the works of art in the purpose-built Art Treasures Palace. Pergam places the Exhibition in the context of contemporary debates about museum architecture and display. With an analysis of the reception of both "Ancient" and "Modern" paintings, the book questions the function of exhibitions in the construction of an art historical canon. The book also provides an essential reference tool: a compiled list of all of the paintings exhibited in 1857 that are now in public collections throughout the world, with an analysis of the collecting trends manifest in their provenance.

Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated introduction to mudlarking which tells the incredible, forgotten history of London through objects found on the foreshore of the River Thames. Often seen combing the shoreline of the River Thames at low tide, groups of archaeology enthusiasts known as 'mudlarks' continue a tradition that dates back to the eighteenth century. Over the years they have found a vast array of historical artefacts providing glimpses into the city's past. Objects lost or discarded centuries ago – from ancient river offerings such as the Battersea Shield and Waterloo Helmet, to seventeenth-century trade tokens and even medals for bravery – have been discovered in the river. This book explores a fascinating assortment of finds from prehistoric to modern times, which collectively tell the rich and illustrious story of London and its inhabitants - illustrated with and array of photographs taken of the items in situ in the mud and gravel of the Thames estuary, at the same time both gritty and glimmering.

Book excerpt: Drawing on the remarkably rich documentary and graphic collections of the City of London, this unique survey tells the history of London, and its role on the wider national and world stage, through a selection of 100 treasures. These may be iconic items connected with famous people or important moments in history, such as William I's confirmation of the City's liberties, issued in 1067, or the City's copy of Magna Carta, issued in 1297; or they may be less obviously remarkable items that offer a unique insight into aspects of London life, such as trade cards, plans for the Thames Barrier or Elizabeth David's annotated cookery books. This beautifully produced book is arranged in five sections: the National and World Stage; the Engine of Finance; London Life; Growth and Renewal; the Arts and Sciences. Each section opens with an introductory text that is followed by scholarly entries on individual items. It will appeal to readers interested in the history of the City (and London more generally) as well as in books, documents and art. AUTHOR: David Pearson is Director of Libraries, Archives and Guildhall Art Gallery for the City of London and has previously worked in several major academic and research libraries, including the British Library, the National Art Library and the University of London Library. He has an extensive record of lecturing and publishing, and his books include Provenance Research in Book History (1994), English Bookbinding Styles (2005) and Books as History (2008). He is currently President of the Bibliographical Society. 260 colour illustrations
