Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Living: And Other Addresses to Girls To undertake to speak of the art of living suggests a difficulty at the very outset. Ought there, in truth, to be any art in right living? Must it not be spontaneous, the mere unconscious self-expression of a beautiful nature? It is to the child, blessed with perfect health, living in an atmosphere of freedom, that we turn when we wish to see the supreme example of the art of living. We love to watch him because he is so natural, so absolutely simple, because what he expresses is himself, himself shown to us without any thought, without any self-consciousness. This is what gives him his charm of character, his grace of action. How can there be an art of living when the beauty of living seems to lie in its very absence of art? But reflection shows that childhood cannot last. Its grace, its spontaneous charm is too often followed by a period of awkwardness in mind and morals as well as in body, a condition generally spoken of as self-consciousness. So used, the epithet self-conscious is one of reproach. But in philosophical language self-consciousness is necessary to the development of character. The individual must become conscious of himself; he must realise self in his relations to things outside himself, to men, to God. He must take count of self, of his powers, of his limitations, so that he may be master of his own career, of his own inner life. This phase of human development is naturally attended by its own particular perils. It no doubt frequently leads to that unpleasant condition described in ordinary language as self-consciousness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rules for Right Living and Right Conduct: From the Teachings of Jesus the Christ In the education of our children we very wisely take great pains to give them rules - rules to apply to their mathematics, their grammar, composition, rhetoric, etc. Later, some will be taught rules for engineering, for surveying, for navigation, or for whatever occupation they may choose. But hitherto we have set these children adrift on the great ocean of existence without giving them any rules for living, or for the conduct of life. We give them neither rudder nor compass by which to steer their ship of life across the stormy waters of this world; neither map nor chart to enable them to avoid ship-wreck and to reach in safety the shore of the great Hereafter. And yet, we wonder that so much character is hopelessly ship-wrecked! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses.
