Download or read book Primer of Pianoforte Playing (Classic Reprint) written by Franklin Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Pianoforte Playing Simplest, and will require but brief consideration. It is obvious that the notes in staccato accompaniment must be light and delicate, and not strong enough to interfere with the melody which they accompany. When they are required to be soft, and yet bright in tone and distinctly articulated, which is often the case, they must be played with a steady hand, the fingers being held in a bent position and with little or no movement of the joints, and the hand lifted from the key with great rapidity, but to a very short distance. This movement, which is very slight though quick, comes from the action of the elbow-joint, and the tone produced is crisp and short, with very little percussion. This touch is suitable for such passages as the bass in the Scherzo of Beethoven's Sonata in E flat, op. 31, No. 3, or the chords of the right hand in the 108th and following bars of the first movement of the same. Book Synopsis The Principles of Expression by : Adolph F. Christiani
Download or read book The Principles of Expression written by Adolph F. Christiani and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Expression: In Pianoforte Playing In writing this work, I had not. only the object in view of providing for those interested in the subject a book of reference, containing a systematic exposition of the principles of expression in pianoforte playing, but I also wished to dispel the erroneous popular belief, that expression is a manifestation of feeling only, or that feeling is the sole basis of expression. I shall endeavor to prove that intelligence, not feeling, is the chief requirement in expression. Fully twenty years ago, when first the idea dawned upon mo, that expression was based upon principles, and not merely upon emotional impulse or individual taste, I asked myself and others: What are those principles? How can I obtain a knowledge, where find a clear exposition of them? My own teachers had never mentioned the subject, and I venture to say that the conditions of musical teaching, so far as expression goes, arc pretty much the same to-day, as they were twenty years ago. Every artist and musician to whom I applied had only private opinions to give on the subject. I searched in German, French, and English literature for more substantial information, but was astonished at the almost total absence of any practical doctrine regarding the laws of expression. For years I collected every scrap of obtainable information, and, in recording my own deductions, was careful throughout to be guided only by natural laws, avoiding absolutely (as every teacher should do) personal inclination. Sifting and classifying this material, I discovered logical connections between many apparent contradictions, and, gradually, succeeded in systematizing, for my own uso in teaching, the leading principles of pianistic expression. Download or read book The Art of Teaching Pianoforte Playing written by J. Alfred Johnstone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Teaching Pianoforte Playing: A Systematized Selection of Practical Suggestions for Young Teachers and Students Technique is necessary. Whether the ambition of the teacher or the student be small or great, if there is to be any success there must be technical training. And the labour of attaining excellence, even in very modest provinces of pianoforte-playing, is greatly lightened by the regular use of some well-ordered and effective system of technical training. There are parents who, during a preliminary interview, tell the teacher that they wish the pupil to be taught to play a few pieces, but would rather that he was not troubled with exercises; and there are pupils plenty of them, who dabble along at these pieces and avoid exercises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pianist and the Art of Music: A Treatise on Piano Playing for Teachers and Students The piano virtuosos, was one of the first to devote all the energy of his genial nature to the reproduction of the better works from the days of Scarlatti, Bach and Haendel to his time; all the notable great pianists have since taken special pride in introducing to the art-loving world the works of the great com posers. Some have made a specialty of one particu lar composer, notably Beethoven and Mozart; others have devoted their efforts successfully to several composers, and the possibility has been demon strated more than once that works of widely differ ent characteristic traits are accessible to the same artist, so that they receive fully adequate readings. Few programs are found nowadays where the names of our great composers and a host of others do not find place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Piano Playing: A Little Book of Simple Suggestions I should like to reiterate at this point two words which I used in the second paragraph: the words consciously or unconsciously. A brief comment upon this alternative may lead to observations which may throw a light upon the matter of reading between the lines, especially as I am rather strongly inclining toward the belief in the unconscious side of the alternative. George Kochevitsky in The Art of Piano Playing supplies some important sources of information previously unavailable in the United States. From these sources, tempered by this own thinking, Kochevitsky formulated a scientific approach that can solve most problems of piano playing and teaching. George Kochevitsky graduated in 1930 from Leningrad Conservatory and did post-graduate work at Moscow Conservatory. After coming to the U.S., he taught privately in New York City, gave a number of lectures, and wrote for various music periodicals.
