Book excerpt: All of the greatest writers, painters, warriors, leaders, inventors, explorers, builders, creators and innovators throughout history understood instigation. They understood how to harness its power, how to apply it in productive, fruitful endeavors, and they used it to create their life's work. These great men and women - the ones who mastered the Art of Instigating - are the people whose books we read, in whose buildings we work, whose art we hang on our walls, and in whose nations we grow, communicate, and thrive. They mastered the art of instigating and brought to life the things that now shape our lives.WHAT IS THE ART OF INSTIGATING?The Art of Instigating is both a method and a practice for creating, making, building, breaking, testing, and conquering. Instigating is the essential practice of every great creator, and at the core of every successful venture.Fundamentally, the Art of Instigating is about taking an idea and turning it into reality.CAN I LEARN THE ART OF INSTIGATING?Absolutely yes. In The Art of Instigating I'll show you how to apply and master the Art of Instigating so you can write the book you've always wanted to write, paint the masterpiece you've always envisioned, build the business you've always longed for, and create and lead the organization you know the world needs.WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?Because it's the difference between true success and failure, between pride in your work and the intense guilt of a wasted life, between being the incredible person you dreamed you could become and the mediocre person you ended up becoming...It's important because YOUR IDEAS are important - and they deserve to be brought to life.PRAISE FOR THE ART OF INSTIGATING"One of the most powerful ebooks of all time. Get it!" - Success Begins Today"Be prepared. The Art of Instigating will shake your world." - Bruce Collins"This book is incredibly challenging and encouraging in that uncomfortable but fruitful way. Thanks Tom." - Melissa LabuschagneHOW DO WE LEARN THE ART OF INSTIGATING?In The Art of Instigating I explore, analyze, and extract information from the people who mastered the art (from people like Seth Godin, Michael Masterson, Steven Pressfield, and Steve Jobs, to C.S. Lewis, Da Vinci, Napoleon, and Aristotle) and package it into simple, practical content, so that you can apply their knowledge in your own life.

Book excerpt: Exploring creative responses to community challenges Creative Instigation is a collection of in-depth case stories focused on effective and innovative community engagement and policymaking in diverse cities across the western U.S. Each story reflects the history and uniqueness of the community, organization, or institution—providing grit to the importance of context to understand the why and the how of this work. It includes the successes and challenges, and the efforts needed to do this work well. Unlike “typical engagement,” where meetings are announced via limited venues with limited information, Creative Instigation describes engagement that is authentic, outreach that is expansive, and research that uncovers the soul of a community. No two approaches are alike. This book is for those most likely to be responsible for community engagement work—city staff and elected leadership, community developers and nonprofit workers, architecture and planning students, scholars, and community activists, as well as people who care about their own community and the future of their city. The in-depth stories of multi-year efforts by organizations, institutions, and communities, working differently, and at times at cross purposes describe the unique, transdisciplinary skills required to bring these sectors together to solve shared problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an overview of the principal features of the legacy of International Tribunals and an assessment of their impact on the International Criminal Court and on the review process of the Rome Statute. It illustrates the foundation of a system of international criminal law and justice through the case-law and practices of the UN ad hoc tribunals and other internationally assisted tribunals and courts. These examples provide advice for possible future developments in international criminal procedure and law, with particular reference to their impact on the ICC and on national jurisdictions. The review process of the Rome Statute is approached as a step of a review process to provide a perspective of the developments in the field since the Statute’s adoption in 1998.

Book excerpt: Following on from the earlier edited collection, Loss of Control and Diminished Responbility, this book is the first volume in the Substantive Issues in Criminal Law series. It serves as a leading point of reference in the area relating to participation in crime and identifies the need for a consistent approach to the doctrinal and theoretical underpinnings of complicity liability. With a section on the UK analysing points of current interest, the book also has a large comparative section dealing with foreign jurisdictions and examines on the basis of a unified research grid how different legal systems treat core issues of participation in the context of criminal law. This book is a valuable reference resource for those in the criminal justice community in the UK and abroad and for academics, the judiciary and policy-makers.

This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about media, mediation, and meaning. The Art of Interpretation focuses on a set of interrelated processes whereby ostensibly human-specific modes of meaning become automated by machines, formatted by protocols, and networked by infrastructures. That is, as computation replaces interpretation, information effaces meaning, and infrastructure displaces interaction. Or so it seems. Paul Kockelman asks: What does it take to automate, format, and network meaningful practices? What difference does this make for those who engage in such practices? And what is at stake? Reciprocally: How can we better understand computational processes from the standpoint of meaningful practices? How can we leverage such processes to better understand such practices? And what lies in wait? In answering these questions, Kockelman stays very close to fundamental concerns of computer science that emerged in the first half of the twentieth-century. Rather than foreground the latest application, technology or interface, he accounts for processes that underlie each and every digital technology deployed today. In a novel method, The Art of Interpretation leverages key ideas of American pragmatism-a philosophical stance that understands the world, and our relation to it, in a way that avoids many of the conundrums and criticisms of conventional twentieth-century social theory. It puts this stance in dialogue with certain currents, and key texts, in anthropology and linguistics, science and technology studies, critical theory, computer science, and media studies.

Over the course of twenty seven short and engaging chapters, the book delves into the social, cultural, economic and political history of West Africa, through prehistory, revolutions, ancient empires, thriving trade networks, religious traditions, and then the devastating impact of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and subsequent colonial rule. The book reflects on the struggle for independence and investigates how politics and economics developed in the post-colonial period. By the end of the book, readers will have a detailed understanding of the fascinating and diverse range of cultures to be found in West Africa, and of how the region relates to the rest of the world. Drawing on decades of teaching and research experience, this book will serve as an excellent textbook for entry-level History and African Studies courses, as well as providing a perfect general introduction to anyone interested in finding out about West Africa.

We use salty or artful language to win arguments, slander, cheat, and bully, as well as to express feelings of joy or frustration by swearing or “blowing off steam.” Rik Smits delves into the magic of oaths and profanity, art and advertising, the lure of fake news and propaganda, as well as invective and off-color jokes the world over. This book shows why conversation dies in crowded elevators and what drives us to curse at our laptops. The Art of Verbal Warfare is, when all is said and done, the story of how we can get through life without coming to physical blows.

Book excerpt: Although sexual violence directed at both females and males is a reality in many on-going conflicts throughout the world today, accountability for the perpetrators of such violence remains the exception rather than the rule. While awareness of the problem is growing, more effective approaches are urgently needed for the investigation and prosecution of conflict-related sexual violence crimes. Upon its establishment in 1993, the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) began the challenging task of prosecuting the perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence crimes, alongside the many other atrocities committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. This book documents the experiences, achievements, challenges, and fundamental insights of the OTP in prosecuting conflict-related sexual violence crimes at the ICTY over the past two decades. It draws on an extensive dossier of OTP documentation, court filings, trial exhibits, testimony, ICTY judgements, and other materials, as well as interviews with current and former OTP staff members. The authors provide a unique analytical perspective on the obstacles faced in prioritizing, investigating, and prosecuting conflict-related sexual violence crimes. While ICTY has made great stridesin developing international criminal law in this area, this volumeexposes the pressing need for determined and increasingly sophisticated strategies in order to overcome the ongoing obstacles in prosecuting conflict-related sexual violence crimes. The book presents concrete recommendations to inform future work being done at the national and international levels, including that of the International Criminal Court, international investigation commissions, and countries developing transitional justice processes. It provides an essential resource for investigators and criminal lawyers, human rights fact-finders, policy makers, rule of law experts, and academics.

Book excerpt: This book investigates how state responsibility can be determined for the wrongdoing of non-state actors. Every day, people, businesses and societies around the world pay a price arising from interactions between states and non-state actors. From insurrections that attempt to create new governments, to states arming belligerent proxies operating overseas, to companies damaging natural environments or providing suspect services, the impact of such situations are felt in numerous ways. They also raise many questions relating to responsibility. In answering these, State Responsibility for Non-State Actors provides a picture of what the law governing this area is, what it could be, and what it should be in light of past histories, present realities and future prospects.
