Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This most unusual book is subtitled Being a Study in the Development of weapons and Appliances of Offence from the Earliest Times to the Age of Gunpowder. It surveys, in considerable detail and with numerous drawings and illustrations, the art and means of aggression developed by man beginning with the bare hand or fist and then the fist reinforced by such appliances as the cestus of Roman times and the knuckleduster of the more enlightened age. From here it moves on to simple, unshafted, hand-held weapons designed for bruising and ripping - clubs, stones etc. The next stage is ‘reinforcing the arm', the development of hafted weapons and attachment of weapon heads to shafts - tha axe and adze type and the ball and thong such as the bola. These are categorized as striking weapons. Then come the pointed weapons - flint and metal daggers, spears, tridents and the like. So we are taken on a stage by stage journey through the whole range of weaponry - grappling hooks, cutting weapons, throwing spears, javelins, harpoons, catapults, blowpipes and the means of throwing or discharging them. The sheer variety of means of dealing aggressively with your opponent, when they are spelled out in detail, is remarkable, and there are many odd looking weapons illustrated. In the detailed study and analysis of its subject this book can have no rival.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Attack: Being a Study in the Development of Weapons and Appliances of Offence, From the Earliest Times to the Age of Gunpowder Some years back, the author's attention was drawn by certain papers, (written now nearly forty years ago), by the late General pitt-rivers (then Colonel lane-fox) to the apparent development of certain weapon types from others. Or from natural forms and it seemed to him worth while to gather further material, and to try how far it would be possible to draw up a tabular pedigree of all types from the most primitive down to gunpowder and developed explosives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of the crossbow on the European battle field in A.D. 1100 as the weapon of choice for shooting down knights threatened the status quo of medieval chivalric fighting techniques. By 1139 the Church had intervened, outlawing the use of the crossbow among Christians. With this edict, arms control was born. As Robert L. O'Connell reveals in this vividly written history of weapons in Western culture, that first attempt at an arms control measure characterizes the complex and often paradoxical relationship between men and arms throughout the centuries. In a sweeping narrative that ranges from prehistoric times to the nuclear age, O'Connell demonstrates how social and economic conditions determine the types of weapons and the tactics used in warfare and how, in turn, innovations in weapons technology often undercut social values. He describes, for instance, how the invention of the gun required a redefinition of courage from aggressive ferocity to calmness under fire; and how the machine gun in World War I so overthrew traditional notions of combat that Lord Kitchener exclaimed, "This isn't war!" The technology unleashed during the Great War radically altered our perceptions of ourselves, as these new weapons made human qualities almost irrelevant in combat. With the invention of the atomic bomb, humanity itself became subservient to the weapons it had produced. Of Arms and Men brilliantly integrates the evolution of politics, weapons, strategy, and tactics into a coherent narrative, one spiced with striking portraits of men in combat and penetrating insights into why men go to war.

Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing aspects of edged weapons personal defense skills is the art of disarming. Given its life-threatening risk factor, disarming is considered the absolute highest level of skill in the bladed arts. Labeled by the Masters of Edged Weapons as "accidental or incidental" disarming is not something you want to try at home using the kitchen steak knife! Although a highly valued set of skills, the Art of Disarming takes literally decades of training, commitment and personal discipline to truly master. What about the rest of us with a real jobs, family and commitments? Inside this detailed training guide, there is a select choice of "bread and butter" techniques designed for rapid assimilation that can give you these practical survival skills. With no previous training whatsoever and a little time (and a patient training partner!) these critical skills can be made part of your personal tool kit - should you need them. In this volume, scope of study includes: Brief history, fundamentals of body position, anatomy of attack and defense against a knife, mastering of your timing, placement, grip, direct application of force and other time-honored edged weapon disarming secrets of the ancients as passed down to Mr. Tarani via the Filipino, Malaysian and Indonesian Masters of the Art of Disarming.

Book excerpt: The destruction of much of the remainder of the Japanese fleet and its air arm in the later half of 1944 left the Japanese Home Islands vulnerable to attack by US naval and air forces. In desperation, the Imperial Japanese Navy proposed using “special attack” formations, or suicide attacks. These initially consisted of crude improvisations of conventional aircraft fitted with high-explosive bombs that could be crashed into US warships. Called “Divine Wind” (Kamikaze), the special attack formations first saw action in 1944, and became the scourge of the US fleet in the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945. In view of the success of these attacks, the Japanese armed forces began to develop an entire range of new special attack weapons. This book will begin by examining the initial kamikaze aircraft attacks, but the focus of the book will be on the dedicated special attack weapons developed in 1944. It also covers specialized suicide attack weapons such as anti-tank lunge mines.
