Book excerpt: Tom Sandcrane must navigate the narrow path between his Cheyenne heritage and the white man’s world For generations, the Sandcrane men have served their tribe as the keepers of the Sacred Arrows. When the time comes for Seth Sandcrane to pass the responsibility on to his son Tom, he waits with pride for his son to assume his place among the elders of the tribe. But Tom wants nothing to do with Sacred Arrows, ancient traditions, and the mystical heritage of the Cheyenne. It is 1896; the nation is growing, and Tom wants a place in the white man’s world. He takes a job in the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a go-between for the government and the Cheyenne. When bureaucratic treachery forces Tom to become an outlaw, he must flee the land of his birth. As America teeters on the brink of the Spanish-American War, Tom Sandcrane will learn to fight—not with sacred arrows, but with a Colt .38.

In addition, it contains wide and balanced coverage of the many different tribal groups, including Canadian and southern populations. Teaching & Learning Experience: Improve Critical Thinking - Indians of the Great Plains provides recent scholarship and up-to-date historical and cultural developments of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries to see the Plains societies and cultures as continuing, living entities — including charts showing tribal organization and kinship systems. Engage Students — Indians of the Great Plains features excerpts of Native poetry, songs, and ethnographic accounts, as well as Chapter Summaries and End-of-Chapter Review Questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin Ridington and Dennis Hastings ingeniously adopt the conventions of Omaha oral narratives to tell the story and convey the significance of the Sacred Pole. Portions of classic anthropological texts (particularly Fletcher and La Flesche?s The Omaha Tribe), Omaha narratives, and other historical and contemporary accounts are repeated?each time in a different, more enlightening context?in a circle of stories seamlessly woven around Umon?hon?ti. The result is an innovative account that effortlessly glides between past and present. This unique blend of Omaha poetics, ethnography, and ethnohistory is a significant contribution to our understanding of the religious life of Native Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable resource for anthropologists, ethnohistorians, and western historians who wish to better understand ritual life in the Plains region. ÑWestern Historical Quarterly "Harrod's discussion of kinship and reciprocity in Northwest Plains cosmology contains valuable insight into Native American worldview, and his emphasis on the moral dimension of ritual process is a major addition to the too-often ignored subject of Native American moral life." ÑJournal of Religion "Includes the major works on Blackfoot, Crow, Cheyennes, and Arapaho religion, the works to which anyone who wishes to understand the religious life of these tribes must continue to turn." ÑChoice "Plains people, Harrod suggests, refracted nature and conceived an environmental ethic through a metaphor of kinship. He is particularly skillful in characterizing the ambiguity Plains people expressed at the necessity of killing and eating their animal kin. Renewing the World also contributes to another new and uncultivated science we might call 'ecology of mind'." ÑGreat Plains Quarterly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Amos Dorsey was an U.S. ethnographer of Indigenous peoples of the Americas, with a special focus on Caddoan and Siouan tribes. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Denison University in 1888, then a second Bachelor's Degree in anthropology in 1890 at Harvard university, and finally PhD in 1894, the first PhD in anthropology from Harvard, and the second ever awarded in the United States. The following account of the Cheyenne social organisation was obtained as part of Dorsey's studies of the Cheyenne Sun-Dance, which, in turn, are part of a comparative study on this ceremony among the Plains Tribes he began in 1901. The Cheyenne Sun-Dance forms the subject of Part II. The accounts of the societies, the myths of the origin of the same, and the story of the medicine-arrows are given, with but slight changes, as they were obtained through Richard Davis, a full blood Cheyenne.

Book excerpt: The Song has begun again. Atia—now called Niva—has succumbed to evil and joined Dethar. Together at last, the reincarnated Keepers unleash brutal destruction on the eastern sun elves. Haunted by his role in all this, Elsvener the Wanderer plunges himself into hostile territory, determined to help his eastern friends. In a desperate move, he sells his freedom to the formidable Draiyahem family in exchange for an army. If the Hekish power families can’t stop Fire City, no one can. Yet the Keepers are far deadlier than even Elsvener guessed, and the Draiyahem are soon bracing for what looks like inevitable martyrdom. Meanwhile, west over the mountains, the still-safe Kingdom of Avar fears Fire City less than they do the Order of Watchers, and the Order of Watchers fears Mathias and Acinath. The young couple have vanished from the castle, embarking on a quest that the Order warns will bring the end of the world. Yet above all this dread and confusion, in both the East and West rings the name of a prophesied savior, long forgotten or misunderstood: the Bringer of Light. The Singing of the Song has commenced. The Demon and his Keepers are not the legend’s only survivors.
