Book excerpt: Neil Fox has made a fortune off the "head we win/tails you lose" venture capital deals negotiated by his brother, costing him almost everything but money. His ex-wife and daughter spurn him, and he lost his young son years ago. He now lives a carefully plotted life, working as a lawyer at a small investment-banking firm and spending nights at home with a drink. When the affable Bud Younger moves in next door--on a parcel that Neil had sold off--Neil takes an almost instant dislike to him. Bud is nearly everything Neil is not--a gregarious, energetic striver loved by his intact family. When Bud asks Neil to fund a new business venture, he reluctantly accepts, setting in motion events that hurtle to a startling and haunting conclusion. The Arriviste delves into the psyche of avarice and envy, presenting a portrait of a man both ordinary and monstrous.

Book excerpt: A wealthy man’s bitter decline takes a sinister turn in this “slow-burn noir” of love, greed, and deceit in 1970s New York (Washington Post Book World). Neil Fox has made a fortune off the “head we win / tails you lose” venture capital deals negotiated by his brother, costing him almost everything but money. His ex-wife and daughter spurn him, and he lost his young son years ago. Now he spends his days working as a lawyer at a small investment-banking firm and his nights at home with a drink. When the affable Bud Younger moves in next door—on a parcel that Neil had sold off—Neil takes an almost instant dislike to him. Bud is nearly everything Neil is not—a gregarious, energetic striver loved by his family. When Bud asks Neil to fund a new business venture, it sets in motion events that hurtle to a startling and haunting conclusion. Named a Booklist Top 10 First Novel of 2011, The Arriviste delves into the psyche of avarice and envy, presenting a portrait of a man both ordinary and monstrous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not being of the West; being behind the West; not being modern enough; not being developed or industrialized, secular, civilized, Christian, transparent, or democratic - these descriptions have all served to stigmatize certain states through history. Drawing on constructivism as well as the insights of social theorists and philosophers, After Defeat demonstrates that stigmatization in international relations can lead to a sense of national shame, as well as auto-Orientalism and inferior status. Ayşe Zarakol argues that stigmatized states become extra-sensitive to concerns about status, and shape their foreign policy accordingly. The theoretical argument is supported by a detailed historical overview of central examples of the established/outsider dichotomy throughout the evolution of the modern states system, and in-depth studies of Turkey after the First World War, Japan after the Second World War, and Russia after the Cold War.

Book excerpt: This book brings together a wide range of topics in leadership ethics and business ethics. It approaches these topics from the perspective of the humanities as well as the social sciences. About half of the book is on leadership and the other half on topics in business ethics. Besides these general areas of research, the book explores how to teach and study ethics in both business ethics and leadership studies. Specifically, it examines issues ranging from the nature of ethical leadership, to studies of authenticity, virtue, and the public and private morality of leaders. In business ethics, the subjects covered span from moral imagination, to casuistry, meaningful work, and workplace ethics. The book includes a section on the importance of liberal arts for studying and teaching ethics in business and professional schools. It concludes with a reflection on the ethical challenges of leaders and followers in a world where some leaders have inverted moral values.

Specifically, it is that quality which sustains poise through selfcontrol in the face of propitious or unpropitious circumstances. The man who is calm and cool, who is master of his actions, of his voice, of his looks, and of his gestures is he who commands his true self and can assert that individuality which is respected everywhere as the root of all that is sincere, just, and good. Personalities are not acquired by dreaming but by hard work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the fundamental enigmas of our existence, and for that matter, God’s existence, is the act of creation. Has the cosmos been created ex nihilo or was it an intelligent design by God? Does God, having created the world, let it evolve and develop on its own, subject to the rules of evolution and chance; or does God intervene in every step of evolution in a deus ex machina manner? What is the role of man in creation? Is it as central as existentialism and quantum mechanics assure us: that without human consciousness interacting with energy-matter, there would not be any objects and life forms? Is man the crown of creation permanently, or once evolution forms a more effective connecting agent between spirit and energy-matter, will man be relegated to the world of fossils? The book concludes with a thorough examination of human norms, values and morals. As such, this book constitutes a comprehensive treatise on the genesis of the world, the birth of God, and the role of man.

Book excerpt: Aboriginal title represents one of the most remarkable and controversial legal developments in the common law world of the late-twentieth century. Overnight it changed the legal position of indigenous peoples. The common law doctrine gave sudden substance to the tribes' claims to justiciable property rights over their traditional lands, catapulting these up the national agenda and jolting them out of a previous culture of governmental inattention. In a series of breakthrough cases national courts adopted the argument developed first in western Canada, and then New Zealand and Australia by a handful of influential scholars. By the beginning of the millennium the doctrine had spread to Malaysia, Belize, southern Africa and had a profound impact upon the rapid development of international law of indigenous peoples' rights. This book is a history of this doctrine and the explosion of intellectual activity arising from this inrush of legalism into the tribes' relations with the Anglo settler state. The author is one of the key scholars involved from the doctrine's appearance in the early 1980s as an exhortation to the courts, and a figure who has both witnessed and contributed to its acceptance and subsequent pattern of development. He looks critically at the early conceptualisation of the doctrine, its doctrinal elaboration in Canada and Australia - the busiest jurisdictions - through a proprietary paradigm located primarily (and constrictively) inside adjudicative processes. He also considers the issues of inter-disciplinary thought and practice arising from national legal systems' recognition of aboriginal land rights, including the emergent and associated themes of self-determination that surfaced more overtly during the 1990s and after. The doctrine made modern legal history, and it is still making it.

Book excerpt: The Measure of All Things is the final volume in a trilogy about man as related to the genesis of the world, to metaphysics, and to the ontological vicissitudes of the human species. This book reviews the condition of man and his relationship with the forces of evolution, in both a biological and a spiritual sense. It is, therefore, an innovative excursion into the present day arguments between the evolutionist and creationist regarding the fate of man.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical interest in foreign novels, especially the Latin American and African novel, has burgeoned in the past two decades. The purpose of this reference bibliography is to provide easier access to the criticism produced from 1965 to 1975 on novels published in Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Canada, Australia, and the middle East. A second volume will cover criticism between 1976 and 1985. Throughout this work, the term "foreign novel" includes novels and other longer works of fiction produced in all countries other than the United States and the United Kingdom. Coverage ranges in time of writing from Apuleius' Metamorphosis (first century, A.D.) and Murasaki's Tale of Genji (11th century) to Garcia Marquez's 100 Years of Solitude (1967) and Margaret Atwood's Surfacing (1972). The 277 journals--chosen primarily because of their wide circulation--and 584 books indexed for relevant material contribute to the 13,000 bibliographic citations on 1,500 authors. This is a reference tool which is surely essential for any library or world literature scholar.

Book excerpt: A Word a Day contains 365 carefully selected words that will enhance and expand your vocabulary, along with their meanings, origins and sample usage and fascinating word-related facts and trivia. It is estimated that on average an English-speaking adult has acquired a functioning vocabulary of 25,000 words by the time they reach middle age. That sounds like a lot - and more than enough for the daily purposes of communicating with each other in speech and writing. However, it is hard to feel quite so sanguine about our word power when considering those 25,000 words account for less than fifteen per cent of the total words in current usage in the English language. Furthermore, new words are created all the time and, as the word pool flourishes, can we afford to allow our vocabulary to stagnate? Logophile Joseph Piercy has the answer: a simple challenge to learn A Word a Day from this user-friendly onomasticon (that's a word list designed for a specific purpose - in case you were wondering .). Each of the 365 words have been carefully selected for their elegance and pertinence in everyday situations and every entry contains a clear and concise outline of meaning, origin and sample usage in context, alongside fascinating word related facts and trivia. A Word a Day is a treasure trove of fascination and fun for all language lovers - delve in and enhance your vocabulary.
