Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Etruscans The Celts, on their first irruption into Europe, dwelt for a time in Thrace, Macedonia, and Greece; in Thessaly and Greece they were called Pelasgi. The concurrent testimony of ancient authors, who state that the Etruscan cities were Pelasgian, is to be taken to mean that the Etruscans were of the same Celtic stock as the Pelasgians of Greece, probably Pelasgians thrown forward upon Italy by those waves of population which rapidly followed each other from Western Asia. After the Etruscans had been settled for some time in Italy, principally in the country between the PO and the Tiber, their pure Druidical worship was affected by the arrival of a Chaldaean ritual and the art of the sooth sayer; these had been dislodged from their native seats by one of those social and political convulsions which from time to time shook the Babylonian Empire - and had passed into Lydia or Maconia,1 the land of enchanters and soothsayers, and thence into Italy, where they found a home among a kindred race, the Etruscans; thus some authors assert that the Etruscans were of Lydian origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Etruria, Vol. 1: Tarchun and His Times, From the Foundation of Tarquinia to the Foundation of Rome WE beg to warn the readers of this work, that the references to ancient authors quoted in it, may often appear incorrect as to paragraph and page. This arises from different editions of the classics having unavoidably been used and consulted, during the composition of the work, owing to a frequent change of residence. In each edition the pages vary, and in some of them the paragraphs. The courteous reader is therefore requested, when at fault, to look into the index of the works in question, and there he will almost always find those references given, which are proper to his own edition, concerning the subject under con sideration. I will not, however, apologise for them, as I am sure that my readers will make full allowances for the difficulties and perils which beset the explorer of an unknown territory. I have avoided technical language, and have endeavoured throughout to introduce such popular explanations as might make the book intelligible to any ordinary educated person. Readers who have no special fondness for philological investigations will probably content themselves with the perusal of the first six chapters and the last. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Etruria A very eminent scholar has desired that the authors referred to in p. 41, vol. I., of this work, as having related that Northern Africa was settled by the Phoenicians, may be named. They are chiefly collected from the Universal Ant. His vols. Xvii. P. 220, &c., and vol. Xviii, p. 141, &c., and they are Aristotle de Mirabilia, Strabo iii Nonnius in Dionys. Xiii., Sallust in J ugurtha, Vell. Fatero, l. C. 2, Florus iii., Praecop de Bell. Vand., Eusebius Chron August in Epist. Ad Rom., besides the modern authorities of Huet, Bachart, and Heeren. The author who asserts that the tribes of Ait Amor and Ait Het. Are Phoenicians, is Gray Jackson, once British Consul amongst them, in his History of the Morocco and Barbary States; and he could judge as to their language not being Arabic, and as to the prefixes of O and Mac not being mispronunciations of that tongue, because he was himself a distinguished Arabic scholar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria, Vol. 1 of 2 The external history of the Etruscans, as there are no direct chronicles extant, is to be gathered only from scattered notices in Greek and Roman writers. Their internal history, till of late years, was almost a blank, but by the continual accumula tion of fresh facts it is new daily acquiring form and substance, and promises, ere long, to be as distinct and palpable as that of Egypt, Greece, or Rome. For we already know the extent and peculiar nature of their civilization - their social condition and modes of life - their extended commerce and intercourse with far distant countries - their religious creed, with its ceremonial Observances in this life, and the joys and torments it set forth in a future state - their popular traditions - and a variety of customs, of all which, History, commonly so called, is either utterly silent, or makes but incidental mention, or gives notices imper feet and obscure. We can now enter into the inner life of the Etruscans, almost as fully as if they were living and moving before us, instead of having been extinct as a nation for more than two thousand years. We can follow them from the cradle to the tomb, - we see them in their national costume, varied according to age, sex, rank, and oflice, - we learn their style of adorning their persons, their fashions, and all the eccentricities of their toilet - we even become acquainted with their peculiar physio gnomy, their individual names and family relationships we know what houses they inhabited, what furniture they used, we behold them at their various avocations - the princes in the council-chamber - the augm', or priest, at the altar, or in solemn procession - the warrior in the battle-field, or returning home in triumph - the judge on the bench - the artisan at his handicraft the husbandman at the plough - the slave at his daily toil, - we see them in the bosom of their families, and at the festive board. Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes ancient accounts describing the Etruscans and their wars with Rome *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "These people of Greek descent were called Etruscans, and it has been discovered that they had advanced so far in civilization, that they afterwards gave many of their customs to the city of Rome when it came to power. A confederacy known as the 'Twelve Cities of Etruria' became famous afterwards, though no one knows exactly which the twelve were." - Arthur Gilman, The Story of Rome from the Earliest Times to the End of the Republic When people think of ancient Italy, the Romans are usually the first and last people that come to mind, but long before Rome was built by Latin speaking people, the culture of Italy was dominated by the Etruscans. Although the Etruscans may not comprise the core of most histories of the ancient Mediterranean, they exerted a profound influence on the region from the 8th-5th centuries BCE that continued to resonate for centuries after as the Romans carried on many of their traditions. Today, much of what is known about the Etruscans comes from the ancient Roman and Greek writers who had a deep respect for them but saw them as exotic and foreign. As the famous Roman philosopher Seneca wrote about the Etruscans, "Whereas we believe lightning to be released as a result of the collision of clouds, they believe that the clouds collide so as to release lightning: for as they attribute all to deity, they are led to believe not that things have a meaning insofar as they occur, but rather that they occur because they must have a meaning." The Etruscans referred to themselves as "Rasenna" in their own language, but the Greeks called them "Tyrrhenians" and the Romans referred to them as "Etrusci," which is where the modern term "Etruscan" is derived (Cornell 1995, 45). As this suggests, reconstructing Etruscan history is based primarily on the Greco-Roman accounts, but other sources are utilized by modern scholars to create a more accurate picture. Unfortunately, despite the fact the Etruscans were a literate people, their own histories have disappeared without a trace. Nevertheless, even with this lack of primary sources, the abundance of classical writings about the Etruscans and modern historical, archaeological, and art historical studies can establish an image of Etruscan history and culture that, although not complete, is enough for scholars to arrive at some important conclusions. An in-depth examination of Etruscan history and culture reveals that the Etruscans developed a culture that was as advanced as that of their Greek contemporaries and was also one that the later Romans were indebted to on many levels. The Etruscans: The History and Culture of the Ancient Italian Civilization that Preceded the Romans looks at the influential civilization that helped give rise to the Roman Empire. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Etruscans like never before, in no time at all.

This manuscript brings forth the works of many who have examined the Basque language and most particularly, Vahan Sarkisian (1954-2011), a Basqologist, professor and world-renowned academician, who served as a Director of the Chair of Romance Philology at the University of Yerevan, President of the International Association of Hispanics, Director of the Basque-Armenian International Journal - Araxes, and an honorary academician of Euskaltzaindia (1919), the official institution, which is responsible for the Basque language, its corpus and its status in society. He saw the obvious link between two ancient language branches, but left this world too soon. This manuscript is aimed to resurrect his research and revitalize this topic for a serious consideration across all scientific disciplines.
