Book excerpt: The return of the Berlin Sing-Akademie s music archive from Kiev in December 2001 represents a significant addition to the Bach Collection of the Berlin Staatsbibliothek. The famous music archive, currently on loan to the music department of the Berlin Staatsbibliothek, was evacuated from Berlin in 1943 and regarded as missing for decades following the invasion by the Red Army. However, in 1999 it was discovered in Kiev by the musicologist Christoph Wolff. The collection of 241 boxes, currently housing the archive in Berlin, comprises several hundred thousand pages of autographs, copies and printed music, many of which are still unknown or hitherto regarded as missing. Of particular value is the Bach Collection which consists of some 26,000 pages and is now accessible for research through the extensive microfiche edition. The archive s Bach Collection contains pieces by 12 composers; all members of the Bach family. It was originally owned by Johann Sebastian Bach, and contains an exquisite collection of calligraphic motets and cantatas by the older Bach generation. Alone Johann Sebastian Bach concerned himself with the musical estate of his family by writing new covers and varying some of the compositions by adding embellishments, even rewriting some of them. He copied the motet Der Gerechte, ob er gleich zu zeitlich stirbt in full. Among the works, known as the Archive of the Elder Bachs, are some unique creations of Baroque vocal music such as the cantata for 22 voices Es erhub sich ein Streit, by Johann Christoph Bach. Far more comprehensive, are the music collections of works by Bach s sons Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach s work in particular, is well represented, as the archive comprises a major part of his musical estate. Carl Philipp Emanuel s late vocal work deserves special mention as it has remained in the dark ever since the composer s death in 1788 and almost nothing is known about it. None of these late works has ever been printed; hardly any survived at all outside the Sing-Akademie archive. Until now, these pieces were regarded as missing, although it was known that more than 20 passions, for example, had previously existed. Now, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach s late religious work is available for general research and presentation in concerts. In addition to passions and oratorios, numerous autographed and authorized copies of cembalo concertos, piano sonatas and chamber music by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach number among the highlights of this, the largest part of the Sing-Akademie s Bachiana collection. Covering almost two centuries of German music history, the extraordinary Bachiana series draws to a close with Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst, the only composer among Bach s grandsons. For this microfiche edition, the recently returned original Bach manuscripts were revised and filmed in the highest quality. In addition, they were examined, sorted and arranged in the correct order. Further, the compositions were identified using existing catalogues of works and numbered accordingly. The works were filmed in an order corresponding to rising shelf marks, based on Carl Friedrich Zelter s system, structuring the archive by genres such as oratorios, cantatas and piano concertos. A printed booklet lists works in the order of their filming, providing brief information on the composer, the title of the work, its catalogue number and a reference to the microfiche location. Numerous indexes further facilitate easy access to individual works. This edition of the Sing-Akademie s Bach manuscripts represents an inestimable addition to the Bach Collection already published by K. G. Saur in the series Musikhandschriften aus der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preussischer Kulturbesitz. At the same time, this is the first edition of a series of microfiche publications encompassing the entire body of this singular music archive.

The valuable essays presented here are designed for the next level of Bach research and are aimed at masters and doctoral students, as well as others interested in coming to terms with the current state of Bach research. Each author covers three aspects within their specific subject area; firstly, to describe the results of research over the past thirty-fifty years, concentrating on the most significant and controversial, such as: the debate over Smend's NBA edition of the B minor Mass; Blume's conclusions with regard to Bach's religion in the wake of the 'new' chronology; Rifkin's one-to-a-vocal-part interpretation; the rediscovery of the Berlin Singakademie manuscripts in Kiev; the discovery of hitherto unknown manuscripts and documents and the re-evaluation of previously known sources. Secondly, each author provides a critical analysis of current research being undertaken that is exploring new aspects, reinterpreting earlier assumptions, and/or opening-up new methodologies. For example, Martin W. B. Jarvis has suggested that Anna Magdalena Bach composed the cello suites and contributed to other works of her husband - another controversial hypothesis, whose newly proposed forensic methodology requires investigation. On the other hand, research into Bach's knowledge of the Lutheran chorale tradition is currently underway, which is likely to shed more light on the composer's choices and usage of this tradition. Thirdly, each author identifies areas that are still in need of investigation and research.

Book excerpt: After decades of stagnation during the reign of his father, the 'Barracks King', the performing arts began to flourish in Berlin under Frederick the Great. Even before his coronation in 1740, the crown prince commenced recruitment of a group of musician-composers who were to form the basis of a brilliant court ensemble. Several composers, including C.P.E. Bach and the Graun brothers, wrote music for the viola da gamba, an instrument which was already becoming obsolete elsewhere. They were encouraged in this endeavour by the presence in the orchestra from 1741 of Ludwig Christian Hesse, one of the last gamba virtuosi, who was described in 1766 as 'unquestionably the finest gambist in Europe'. This study shows how the unique situation in Berlin produced the last major corpus of music written for the viola da gamba, and how the more virtuosic works were probably the result of close collaboration between Hesse and the Berlin School composers. The reader is also introduced to the more approachable pieces which were written and arranged for amateur viol players, including the king's nephew and ultimate successor, Frederick William II. O'Loghlin argues that the aesthetic circumstances which prevailed in Berlin brought forth a specific style that is reflected not only in the music for viola da gamba. Characteristics of this Berlin style are identified with reference to a broad selection of original written sources, many of which are hardly accessible to English-speaking readers. There is also a discussion of the rather contradictory reception history of the Berlin School and some of its composers. The book concludes with a complete thematic catalogue of the Berlin gamba music, with a listing of original manuscript sources and modern publications. The book will appeal to professional and amateur viola da gamba players as well as to scholars of eighteenth-century German music.

Bach who became composers, Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-88) was the most prolific, the most original, and the most influential both during and after his lifetime. This first full-length English-language study critically surveys his output, examining not only the famous keyboard sonatas and concertos but also the songs, chamber music, and sacred works, many of which resurfaced in 1999 and have not previously been evaluated. The book also outlines the composer's career from his student days at Leipzig and Frankfurt (Oder) to his nearly three decades as court musician to Prussian King Frederick "the Great" and his last twenty years as cantor at Hamburg. Focusing on the composer's choices within his social and historical context, the book shows how C. P. E. Bach deliberately avoided his father's style while adopting the manner of his Berlin colleagues, derived from Italian opera. A new perspective on the composer emerges from the demonstration that C. P. E. Bach, best known for his virtuoso keyboard works, refashioned himself as a writer of vocal music and popular chamber compositions in response to changing cultural and aesthetic trends. Supplementary texts and musical examples are included on a companion website. David Schulenberg is professor of music at Wagner College and teaches historical performance at the Juilliard School. Book excerpt: Neither Spem in alium, the widely acclaimed ‘songe of fortie partes’ by Thomas Tallis, nor Alessandro Striggio’s forty-part Mass is the largest-scale counterpoint work in Western music. The actual winner is Gregorio Ballabene, a relatively unknown Roman maestro di cappella, a contemporary of Giovanni Paisiello, Joseph Haydn and Luigi Boccherini, who composed in forty-eight parts for twelve choirs. His Mass saw only a public rehearsal and was never performed liturgically despite all of Ballabene’s efforts to promote it. On closer inspection, however, the work deserves special consideration as a piece of outstanding combinatory creativity – the product of a talent able to conceive, structure and realise a project of colossal dimensions. It might even be claimed that if Charles Burney had gained knowledge of it, all derogatory comments by nineteenth-century music historians would not have succeeded in extinguishing the interest of later generations. Ballabene’s Mass has remained completely unstudied until today, even though the score survives in prominent collections. This study offers, for the first time, a historical and analytical perspective on this overlooked manifestation of a very individual musical intelligence.

Though considered a definitive contribution to the genre during his lifetime, his concertos, sonatas, and suites were then virtually ignored for nearly two centuries following his death. Yet these works are now among the most popular in the baroque repertory. In Music for a Mixed Taste, Steven Zohn considers Telemann's music from stylistic, generic, and cultural perspectives. He investigates the composer's cosmopolitan "mixed taste"--a blending of the French, Italian, English, and Polish national styles-and his imaginative expansion of this concept to embrace mixtures of the old (late baroque) and new (galant) styles. Telemann had an equally remarkable penchant for generic amalgamation, exemplified by his pioneering role in developing hybrid types such as the sonata in concerto style ("Sonate auf Concertenart") and overture-suite with solo instrument ("Concert en ouverture"). Zohn examines the extramusical meanings of Telemann's "characteristic" overture-suites, which bear descriptive texts associating them with literature, medicine, politics, religion, and the natural world, and which acted as vehicles for the composer's keen sense of musical humor. Zohn then explores Telemann's unprecedented self-publishing enterprise at Hamburg, and sheds light on the previously unrecognized borrowing by J.S. Bach from a Telemann concerto. Music for a Mixed Taste further reveals how Telemann's style polonaise generates musical and social meanings through the timeless oppositions of Orient-Occident, urban-rural, and serious-comic.
