Book excerpt: Available for a limited time, this artist’s book by renowned visual artist Tacita Dean explores her chance encounters with objects in the archives of the Getty Research Institute. As the Getty Research Institute artist in residence in 2014–15, Tacita Dean was asked to define a subject and identify a path of research. What she proposed instead was a project titled “The Importance of Objective Chance as a Tool of Research.” Her idea was to allow chance to be her guide. Dean researched randomly, picking out boxes from the collections without knowing their contents, meandering through objects and images from sources as varied as medieval alchemy books to twentieth-century artist letters. Monet Hates Me features reproductions of fifty artworks she created from Getty’s archival holdings along with enlightening texts that expand on her method of research and illustrate her encounters with the archives.

Book excerpt: "In Young's work, the big essential questions—mortality, identity, the meaning of life—aren't simply food for thought; they're grounds for entertainment."—Toronto Star "Surrealism seldom seems as much like real life as in Young's hilarious and cautionary poems."—Booklist Bender gathers a generous selection of new work along with treasure from Dean Young's twelve volumes. Strongly influenced by Surrealism, Dean Young's poems flash with extravagant imagery, humorous speech, sly views of the quotidian, and the exposed nerves of heartache. As the American Academy of Arts and Letters raved, "Young's poems are as entertaining as a three-ring circus and as imaginative as a canvas by Hieronymus Bosch. He is one of the most inventive and satisfying poets writing today." From "Even Funnnier Looking Now": If someone had asked me then, Do you suffer from the umbrage of dawn's dark race horses, is your heart a prisoner of raindrops? Hell yes! I would have said or No way! Never would I have said, What could you possibly be talking about? I had just gotten to the twentieth century like a leftover girder from the Eiffel Tower. My Indian name was Pressure-Per-Square-Inch. I knew I was made of glass but I didn't yet know what glass was made of: hot sand inside me like pee going all the wrong directions, probably into my heart which I knew was made of gold foil glued to dust . . .

Book excerpt: 'A wonderfully useful book, told with wit and wisdom' - Adam Kay, best-selling author of THIS IS GOING TO HURT "Get up or you'll miss the best part of the day!" "You treat this place like a hotel." "Can you just put that phone down for one minute?!" After years of reliable performance, has something recently gone wrong with your parents? Do you find yourself stressed out, arguing about the most ridiculous things? Is it like you're processing the same world with entirely different brains? Do you and your parents want to fix things? There are hundreds of books for them about how to deal with you. Now, for the first time, doctor of brains and international bestselling author, Dean Burnett has written a book for YOU to understand just what on earth is going on. Like, just WHY are your parents: - Obsessed with tidiness - Not letting you get enough sleep - Just generally not getting anything that's important to you! But don't worry. These are very normal parent malfunctions, and by understanding the science behind where they're coming from, you'll know exactly how to troubleshoot conflict when it occurs (and even fix it before it does). You'll never be able to remove arguments completely. But imagine what you'd be capable of if you weren't wasting all that time and energy arguing about tidying your room.

Book excerpt: "The book is like a dream you want to last forever" (Roberta Silman, The New York Times Book Review), now with a gorgeous new cover by the famed designer Peter Mendelsund A masterwork of W. G. Sebald, now with a gorgeous new cover by the famed designer Peter Mendelsund The Rings of Saturn—with its curious archive of photographs—records a walking tour of the eastern coast of England. A few of the things which cross the path and mind of its narrator (who both is and is not Sebald) are lonely eccentrics, Sir Thomas Browne’s skull, a matchstick model of the Temple of Jerusalem, recession-hit seaside towns, wooded hills, Joseph Conrad, Rembrandt’s "Anatomy Lesson," the natural history of the herring, the massive bombings of WWII, the dowager Empress Tzu Hsi, and the silk industry in Norwich. W.G. Sebald’s The Emigrants (New Directions, 1996) was hailed by Susan Sontag as an "astonishing masterpiece perfect while being unlike any book one has ever read." It was "one of the great books of the last few years," noted Michael Ondaatje, who now acclaims The Rings of Saturn "an even more inventive work than its predecessor, The Emigrants."

Book excerpt: For the first time in print! Inspired by our favourite everyday a**holes, this first collection of over 180 irreverent sketches by Dean Blake contain some of his earliest (and most popular) online works. Spanning over two years of the author's career, Everyday A***holes introduces us to a cast of characters we're only too familiar with in our everyday lives. Meet Helen, who literally has an asshole for a boyfriend. And Mr Nigel, who was unfortunately cursed with a generic pedo face. And let's not forget Carla, who annoyingly forgot to spit in her husband's coffee again. Laugh, cry, grit your teeth, run away-whatever you choose to do, know that this book was destined to be in your hands. Or, at the very least, a present for that friend of yours who needs to chill out and secretly chuckle once in a while. WARNING: This book is not for the easily offended. REVIEWS: "The greatest book ever created." - Dean Blake "Vote Dean for president!" - Dean Blake "When will you pay me back?" - Dean's dad

Book excerpt: "Hans Burkhardt was born in Basel, Switzerland in 1904. In 1924, after years of Dickensian poverty, he immigrated to New York City. Working in a furniture factory during the day, he took art classes at night. One of his teachers was Armenian immigrant Arshile Gorky, who became Burkhardt's mentor, friend and occasional collaborator. Burkhardt moved to Los Angeles in 1937 and exhibited widely until his death in 1994. Burkhardt's work ranged from lyrical naturalism to early cubist explorations to quasi-surrealist distortions to intense expressionism. In painting, drawing and printmaking, he addressed the visual delights of everyday life and the horrors of war, the truths of love and the lies of government. The diverse formal and emotional territories of his work are united by Burkhardt's humanistic vision and astonishing technical skills. He created images of sumptuous beauty and searing commentaries on the social and political issues of the time. In doing so, he made a unique and lasting contribution to 20th century art. Burkhardt used art to analyze form, to protest social inequities, and to explore the mysteries of life. He also used art as a potent teaching tool, working on the faculty at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) from 1963 to 1973, and continuing to offer weekly workshops on campus until 1990. In the 1970s and 1980s, Burkhardt made a series of gifts to the university. Now totaling almost 1,000 pieces, the CSUN Hans Burkhardt Foundation Collection is a stunning assemblage of the master artist's oeuvre. This book serves as a catalogue to the Fall 2008 exhibition of selected Burkhardt works from the CSUN Collection, and as an introduction to that collection for future students and scholars. The exhibition was organized by Betty Ann Brown, Professor of Art History in CSUN's Department of Art. Brown also edited this volume, which includes her essay, as well as contributions by Peter Selz, University of California, Berkeley Professor Emeritus of Art History; Margarita Nieto, Professor in CSUN's Department of Chicano/a Studies; and Jack Rutberg, founder and owner of Jack Rutberg Fine Arts Gallery."--Provided by publisher
