Book excerpt: The anodic behaviour of gold is of fundamental importance not only in processes involving the metal, such as its extraction, refining, electroplating, electroetching and electropolishing, but also in the many uses of gold in which its resistance to corrosion is critical. The first part of a review of this subject is presented. It deals with the anodic characteristics of gold in acidic solutions containing various ligands which form stable complexes with gold(I) or gold(III). The kinetics and mechanisms of the formation of oxide films on gold by anodic polarization are discussed, as well as the various theories regarding the chemical nature of the films and the influence that their formation has on the anodic dissolution and passivation of the metal. In those cases for which data were available, the mechanisms of the active dissolution of the metal are reviewed and its behaviour in the presence of various ligands is discussed with special reference to the proportions of gold(I), gold (III) and the oxidized forms of the ligands which are produced by anodic polarization at various potentials.

Book excerpt: The dissolution of gold in alkaline solutions containing cyanide ions is of great importance and its application in the MacArthur-Forrest process towards the end of the last century revolutionized the extraction of gold from its ores. Because of this, and its use in many industrial processes involving gold, it has been widely studied. What is known - and still unknown - about this reaction constitutes the main theme of this second instalment of a review of the anodic behaviour of gold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gold processing industry is experiencing change. As free-milling and oxide ores become depleted, more complex polymetallic and refractory ores are being processed, coupled with increasing pressure for stricter environmental compliance. Recent years have also seen a steady reduction in mineral processing and metallurgy graduates and a gradual loss of older operating experience. A contribution to documenting current and future best practice in gold ore processing seems timely. The focus of this volume is on advances in current gold plant operation, from conception to closure; chapters also cover innovations at the bench and pilot-scale level that would be expected to find commercial application at some stage. Sufficient coverage is also given to the chemistry and engineering aspects. The general principle behind the structure of the volume is that of flowsheeting based on unit operations and applied to a mineralogical classification of gold ore types. From concept to closure, this book covers all unit operations, mineralogies and processes that are relevant to dealing with today's complex orebodies.Practical experience is vital to the successful development, operation and closure of any operation. The 42 chapters have been contributed by a total of 66 authors and co-authors who are experts from countries spanning the globe, and representing exhaustive practical knowledge covering many disciplines relevant to gold processing.* Current best practice as elucidated by a select panel of experts in the field* Innovations at the bench and pilot-scale level that would be expected to find commercial application at some stage* Mineralogical-based approach to flowsheeting

Book excerpt: Gold is used in a wide range of industrial and medical applications and accounts for over 10 percent of the annual demand for metal, worth billions of dollars annually. While much has been written about the mystique and trade of gold, very little has been written about the science and technology in which it is involved. Edited by two respected auth
