Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anodic behaviour of gold is of fundamental importance not only in processes involving the metal, such as its extraction, refining, electroplating, electroetching and electropolishing, but also in the many uses of gold in which its resistance to corrosion is critical. The first part of a review of this subject is presented. It deals with the anodic characteristics of gold in acidic solutions containing various ligands which form stable complexes with gold(I) or gold(III). The kinetics and mechanisms of the formation of oxide films on gold by anodic polarization are discussed, as well as the various theories regarding the chemical nature of the films and the influence that their formation has on the anodic dissolution and passivation of the metal. In those cases for which data were available, the mechanisms of the active dissolution of the metal are reviewed and its behaviour in the presence of various ligands is discussed with special reference to the proportions of gold(I), gold (III) and the oxidized forms of the ligands which are produced by anodic polarization at various potentials.
