Book Synopsis White Lies: Racism, Education and Critical Race Theory by : David Gillborn
Download or read book White Lies: Racism, Education and Critical Race Theory written by David Gillborn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unpacking Critical Race Theory (CRT) and exploring why it has become a focus in politics across the US and the UK, White Lies uses CRT to expose the systemic racism that shapes education. It charts the coordinated campaigns – involving think tanks, mainstream media and politicians – that have tried to silence antiracism in the wake of George Floyd's murder and 'Black Lives Matter'. Each chapter is devoted to exposing a key ‘white lie’ by examining the evidence that shows how the interests of white people continue to occupy centre stage and block movement towards a more equitable education for all. Gillborn establishes how the public debates, shaped by misinformation and 'white lies', sustain race inequity and portray antiracism as a threat to freedom and justice. Key controversies are dissected and debunked, including: the extensive and coordinated anti-CRT campaigns in the US and the UK; the use of racial gaslighting to undermine claims to social justice; how multiple forms of intimidation are used to silence antiracist teaching and protest; the inaccurate portrayal of the white working class as race victims; and how cruelty, in policy, aims to unify whites and demonize minorities. By avoiding unnecessary jargon to make complex debates accessible to a wide audience, this book is ideal reading for anyone studying CRT or interested in the topic of contemporary educational equality.

Book Synopsis The Annual Report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Education, Children's Services and Skills 2007/08 by : Great Britain. Office for Standards in Education
Download or read book The Annual Report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Education, Children's Services and Skills 2007/08 written by Great Britain. Office for Standards in Education and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the establishment, on 1 April 2007, of the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, Ofsted's responsibilities for inspecting children's services changed substantially, with Ofsted now regulating and inspecting childcare, children's social care and provision for learners of all ages. This report covers the first full year of reporting on the organisation's new remit. The first section presents an evaluation of the quality and standards in care, early education, schools, colleges, adult learning and skills, and children's services. It is based on evidence from more than 45,000 inspections and regulatory visits in 2007-08. The second section draws on Ofsted's thematic inspections and surveys in the different areas of its remit. This section evaluates the effectiveness with which providers seek to address three important matters: improving the life chances of the least advantaged members of society through excellence in provision; safeguarding children and young people from neglect, abuse and other forms of harm; and enabling learners to acquire the skills they need to succeed in their working lives. The Chief Inspector is encouraged by the recognition that much is going well for so many children, young people and adult learners, but frustrated that there is still too much that is patently inadequate and too many settings and institutions where the rate of improvement is unacceptably slow.

Book Synopsis Echoing Events by : Tina van der Vlies
Download or read book Echoing Events written by Tina van der Vlies and published by V&R unipress. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Echoing Events” questions the perpetuation, actualization, and canonization of national narratives in English and Dutch history textbooks, wide-reaching media that tendentially inspire a sense of meaning, memory, and thus also identity. The longitudinal study begins in the 1920s, when the League of Nations launched several initiatives to reduce strong nationalistic visions in textbooks, and ends in the new millennium with the revival of national narratives in both countries. The analysis shows how and why textbook authors have narrated different histories – which vary in terms of context, epoch, and place – as ‘echoing events’ by using recurring plots and the same combinations of historical analogies. This innovative and original study thus investigates from a new angle the resistance of national narratives to change.
