Book Synopsis The Annals of Tacitus: Book 4 by : A. J. Woodman
Download or read book The Annals of Tacitus: Book 4 written by A. J. Woodman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book 4 of Tacitus' Annals, described by Sir Ronald Syme as 'the best that Tacitus ever wrote', covers the years AD 23–28, the pivotal period in the principate of the emperor Tiberius. Under the malign influence of Sejanus, the henchman who duped him and was loaded with honours, Tiberius withdrew to the island of Capri and was never again seen in Rome, where the treason trials engendered an atmosphere of terror. The volume presents a new text of Book 4, as well as a full commentary on the text, covering textual, literary, linguistic and historical matters. The introduction discusses the relationship between Tacitus and Sallust. The volume completes the sequence which began with commentary on Books 1 and 2 of the Annals by F. R. D. Goodyear (1972, 1981) and was continued by commentary on Book 3 by A. J. Woodman and R. H. Martin (1996) and on Books 5-6 by A. J. Woodman (2016).

The second part examines the long-term record on productivity among Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, considers the sources of growth among them with particular attention to the role of education, investigates convergence at the industry level among them, and examines the productivity slowdown of the 1970s. The third part looks at the sources of growth among non-OECD countries. Each chapter emphasizes the factors that appear to be most important in explaining growth performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their inception, the Perspectives in Logic and Lecture Notes in Logic series have published seminal works by leading logicians. Many of the original books in the series have been unavailable for years, but they are now in print once again. This volume, the twentieth publication in the Lecture Notes in Logic series, contains the proceedings of the 2001 European Summer Meeting of the Association for Symbolic Logic, held at the Vienna University of Technology. Two long articles present accessible expositions on resolution theorem proving and the determinacy of long games. The remaining articles cover separate research topics in many areas of mathematical logic, including applications in computer science, proof theory, set theory, model theory, computability theory, linguistics and aspects of philosophy. This collection will interest not only mathematical logicians but also philosophical logicians, historians of logic, computer scientists, formal linguists and mathematicians working in algebra, abstract analysis and topology.
Book Synopsis Selected Papers of E. B. Dynkin with Commentary by : Evgeniĭ Borisovich Dynkin
Download or read book Selected Papers of E. B. Dynkin with Commentary written by Evgeniĭ Borisovich Dynkin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugene Dynkin is a rare example of a contemporary mathematician who has achieved outstanding results in two quite different areas of research: algebra and probability. In both areas, his ideas constitute an essential part of modern mathematical knowledge and form a basis for further development. Although his last work in algebra was published in 1955, his contributions continue to influence current research in algebra and in the physics of elementary particles. His work in probability is part of both the historical and the modern development of the topic. This volume presents Dynkin's scientific contributions in both areas. Included are Commentary by recognized experts in the corresponding fields who describe the time, place, role, and impact of Dynkin's research and achievements. Biographical notes and the recollections of his students are also featured. This book is jointly published by the AMS and the International Press.
