Book Synopsis The Circulation of Knowledge Between Britain, India and China by :
Download or read book The Circulation of Knowledge Between Britain, India and China written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Circulation of Knowledge Between Britain, India and China, twelve scholars examine how knowledge, things and people moved within, and between, the East and the West from the early modern period to the twentieth century. The collection starts by looking at the ways and means that knowledge circulated, first in Europe, but then beyond to India and China. It engages the knowledge and encounters of those Europeans as they moved across the globe. It participates in the attempt to open up more nuanced and balanced trajectories of colonial and post-colonial encounters. By focusing on exchange, translation, and resistance, the authors bring into the spotlight many "bit-players" and things originally relegated to the margins in the development of late modern science. Contributors include Karen Smith, Larry Stewart, Savrithri Preetha Nair, Jan Golinski, Arun Bala, Jonathan Topham, Khyati Nagar, Yang Haiyan, Fa-ti Fan, Grace Yen Shen, Jahnavi Phalkey, Veena Rao, and Sundar Sarukkai.
Book Synopsis Race and Sociocultural Inclusion in Science Communication by : Elizabeth Rasekoala
Download or read book Race and Sociocultural Inclusion in Science Communication written by Elizabeth Rasekoala and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 12 is available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion in science communication are in danger of generating much concern without effecting change and systematic transformations. This radical volume addresses these circular discourses and reveals the gaps in the field. Putting the spotlight on the marginalised voices of so-called 'racialised minorities', and those from Global South regions, it interrogates the global footprint of the science communication enterprise. Moving beyond tokenistic and extractive approaches, this book creates a space for academics and practitioners to challenge issues around race and sociocultural inclusion, providing mutual learning, paradigm-shifting perspectives, and innovative ways forward for the science communication advancement agenda.

Book excerpt: Indian scientific achievements in the early twentieth century are well known, with a number of heralded individuals making globally recognized strides in the field of astrophysics. Covering the period from the foundation of the Asiatick Society in 1784 to the establishment of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in 1876, Sen explores the relationship between Indian astronomers and the colonial British. He shows that from the mid-nineteenth century, Indians were not passive receivers of European knowledge, but active participants in modern scientific observational astronomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1796 a 17-year old Anglo-Irish youth, Jonathan Henry Lovett, was appointed a junior clerk with the British East India Company. With Britain at war with France, Lovett sailed from England to India aboard the East Indiaman Malabar. It took the ship seven months to reach Bombay, where Lovett disembarked in January 1797. Lovett kept a journal during the voyage in which he recorded his observations of seabirds, fish, and marine life seen from the quarterdeck of the Malabar. During a stopover at the Cape of Good Hope he described its rugged mountains, exotic wildlife, its Dutch and native inhabitants, British military encampments, and ships coming and going. Originally written in two volumes recently discovered in libraries 7,000 miles apart, the complete Jonathan Lovett journal comes together here for the first time in living memory. Excerpts from the Malabar's logbook and detailed maps add additional detail to this tale of travel by sea in the days of the East Indiamen.
