But, who was the original author of the nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill” who went up the hill? In truth, no-one knows. It is thought to be a “nonsense” poem although there are a few truisms contained in the lines. In the 18thC. vinegar and brown paper were used to draw bruises out. But, who ever heard of someone going “uphill” to draw water? In most cases people talking about going “down” to the river or well to draw water. The phrase "Jack and Jill" was in use in England as early as the 16th century to indicate a boy and a girl. A comedy with the title Jack and Jill was performed at the Elizabethan court in 1567-68, and the phrase was used twice by Shakespeare: in A Midsummer Night's Dream, but the poem did not eventuate until the 18th C. We know this because the earliest known printed version comes from a reprint of John Newbery's “Mother Goose's Melody”, thought to have been first published in London around 1765. Here, we have used the illustrated edition published by publisher J. Aldis (first name unknown) of London in 1806. During her adventures, Maya befriends other insects and braves dangers with them. In the climax of the book, Maya is taken prisoner by hornets, the bees' sworn enemies. Prisoner of the hornets, Maya learns of a hornet plan to attack her native hive. Maya is faced with the decision to either return to hive and suffer her due punishment, saving the hive, or leaving the plan unannounced, saving herself but destroying the hive. After long consideration of her options, she makes the decision to return. On her return she announces the coming attack and is unexpectedly pardoned. The forewarned bees triumph over the hornet attack force. Only a servant seems to realize the irony and said, “Poor little dog, you saved his child!” Ultimately, the dog is inconsolable and pines at the tomb of the puppy with clear implications that it will do so until death In THE STOLEN WHITE ELEPHANT, a detective mystery, a Siamese (Thai) white elephant, en route from Siam to Britain as a gift to Queen Victoria, breaks free and disappears in New Jersey. The local police department goes into high gear to solve the mystery. The elephant’s actions and movements are related in a number of telegrams sent by the detectives tracking the animal. The name Rustem is derived from the Persian name Rostam, the name of the epic Persian hero figure who is featured in this volume. In the Shahnameh, Rostam and his predecessors are Marzbans of Sistan which is in present-day Baluchestan (Balòčestàn‎) Province, Iran. The Hero Tales of Rostem/Rostam rank equally alongside the Spanish epics of el Cid, the French, Song of Roland, the Finnish Väinämöinen who features in the Kalevala, the epic of Finland, of Sigurd and Brynhild in the Norse Volsung saga, the adventures and achievements of Beowulf and of the Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Rostam is always represented as the mightiest of Iranian paladins (holy warriors), and the atmosphere of the episodes in which he features is strongly reminiscent of the Parthian period (247 BC – 224 AD). He was immortalized by the 10th-century Persian poet Ferdowsi in the rather lengthy Shahnameh, or Epic of Kings, which contains pre-Islamic Iranian folklore and history. Rustem is best known for his tragic fight with Esfandiar, the other legendary Iranian hero, for his expedition to Mazandaran (not to be confused with the modern Mazandaran province), and for his mournful fight with his son, Sohrab, who was killed in the battle. Rostam was eventually killed by Shaghad, his half-brother who son the of Zal and Rudaba. This volume features 22 of Rustem's adventures across Persia, Afghanistan and the surrounding lands. He wore a special suit into battle, named Babr-e Bayan.
