Book excerpt: In order to understand better the transmission and scattering of radiation in air, a series of measurements were made to determine the energy and angular distributions at large distances from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Health Physics Research Reactor and an 800-curie]60 Co source. Both sources were positioned at various elevations on a 1527-ft tower while data were acquired by detectors located in collimators at either 750 or 1000 yd from the base of the tower. Good measurements were obtained of neutron and gamma-ray doses from the HPRR and gamma doses from the ]60Co source as a function of angle of incidence. Scintillation spectra of the gamma rays from the ]60Co source were also obtained. No useful spectrum information was obtained from the HPRR.

Book excerpt: The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.

Book excerpt: The differential production cross sections for ten gamma rays resulting from the n, n' gamma reaction of 2.8 MeV neutrons with the nuclei of Na, Mg, Al, S, and Cl were measured. Although measurements of some of these cross sections at 90 deg have been reported previously, the newly acquired angular mobility of the neutron generator made possible the extension of these measurements to other angles. These resulting angular distributions were also calculated using Satchler's formalism adapted to Moldauer's modification of Hauser-Feshbach theory, using the transmission coefficients of Perey and Buck. Each distribution was calculated using two values of Moldauer's parameter Q. The theoretical variations with angle of the gamma-ray production cross sections is reproduced from the computer-output graphs. The present experimental results obtained at 90 deg, 70 deg, 55 deg, and 31 deg are plotted on these graphs along with the results of others where they are available. (Author).
