Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Barry Spurr's eagerly-awaited, definitive study of T.S. Eliot's Anglo-Catholic belief and practice shows how the poet is religion shaped his life and work for almost forty years, until his death in 1965. The author examines Eliot's formal adoption of Anglo-Catholicism, in 1927, as the culmination of his intellectual, cultural, artistic, spiritual and personal development to that point. This book presents the first detailed analysis of the unique influence that Anglo-Catholicismis doctrinal and devotional principles, and its social teaching, had on Eliot's poetry, plays, prose and personal life. An informed presentation and discussion of Anglo-Catholicism at the time of Eliot's conversion and through the subsequent decades of his Christian faith and practice. Significant new material from correspondence and diaries which sheds light on Eliot's thought, poetry and prose. This book is essential reading for all scholars and readers of T.S. Eliot and his circle; for students and devotees ofAnglo-Catholicism, and scholars of the interaction between literature and theology, especially in the twentieth century. It will also be of use to senior and Honours-level undergraduates and postgraduate research students working in the fields of Modernism and its principles and belief systems, and for students of religion, especially Western Christianity and Anglicanism."

In it, Ramsey understands the church as a reflection the death and resurrection of Christ, and then argues that the various expressions of Christianity today each express their own gifts in accordance with the Resurrection, whether they are Catholic, Protestant/Evangelical, Eastern, or Anglican. A rewarding read for whomever undertakes it, this book will broaden your view of the church, and deepen your appreciation for the many forms of Christian expression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglo-Catholicism The Anglo-Catholic Movement has been described, without exaggeration, as the most wonderful movement that the Church has over witnessed. The vastness of the change it has made in the English Church, as the result of recalling it to forgotten first principles of its life and being, is known to everyone. Like everything worth while the Movement has, of course, provoked violent hostility. Like Christianity itself it is to some a stumbling-block, to others foolishness. Thus to the Protestants it is a libel on the Gospel, to the Roman Catholics a parody of Catholicism. "By their fruits," it has been said, "ye shall know." The fruits of logical Protestantism are to be seen in Germany and other countries to-day. They spell unbelief. The fruits of Anglo-Catholicism are to be seen by all in the growth of the Religious Life once again in the English Church, by the spread of intelligent devotion, of stricter lives, of a piety which is not distinguishable from Catholic piety in other parts of the Catholic Church. No thoughtful man will hold any section of the Church to be perfect. He will see onesidedness everywhere, the fruit of disunion. In one Communion he will perceive a too cast-iron rigidity, in another a refusal to advance and develop, in our own a liberty which has degenerated into licence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outposts of the Faith offers ten compelling portraits of country churches where the Anglo-Catholic movement flourished during the twentieth century. Rightly famed for its dedicated and heroic work in poor inner-city areas, little is recorded about the impact of Anglo-Catholicism in rural parishes, nor have the stories of some of its more colourful rural priests and people been told, nor of those forces at work in out of the way places which affected the wider church and subsequent direction of the movement. From Cornwall to the Fens, Michael Yelton has conducted visits, interviews and archival research and has created vividly detailed and inspiring accounts. Here we encounter some well known names about whom very little has been written. We also meet some individuals who made outstanding contributions to Anglo-Catholicism in their day, but whose names and accomplishments have become almost forgotten. Outposts of the Faith records devotion and eccentricity in generous measure - we meet one priest who removed parts of his clerical clothing whenever any part of the 1662 Prayer Book was recited, another who was shot by a parishioner, another who faithfully served the same Devon parish for seventy years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical and Theological Reflections on the Anglican Church from J. I. Packer The Anglican Church has a rich theological heritage filled with a diversity of views and practices. Like a river with a main current and several offshoot streams, Anglicanism has a main body with many distinct, smaller communities. So what constitutes mainstream Anglicanism? Influential Anglican theologian J. I. Packer makes the case that "authentic Anglicanism" is biblical, liturgical, evangelical, pastoral, episcopal (ordaining bishops), national (engaging with the culture), and ecumenical (eager to learn from other Christians). As he surveys the history and tensions within the Anglican Church, Packer casts a vision for the future that is grounded in the Scriptures, fueled by missions, guided by historical creeds and practices, and resolved to enrich its people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early Victorian England there was intense interest in understanding the early Church as an inspiration for contemporary sanctity. This was manifested in a surge in archaeological inquiry and also in the construction of new churches using medieval models. Some Anglicans began to use a much more complicated form of ritual involving vestments, candles, and incense. This "Anglo-Catholic" movement was vehemently opposed by evangelicals and dissenters, who saw this as the vanguard of full-blown "popery." The disputed buildings, objects, and art works were regarded by one side as idolatrous and by the other as sacred and beautiful expressions of devotion. Dominic Janes seeks to understand the fierce passions that were unleashed by the contended practices and artifacts - passions that found expression in litigation, in rowdy demonstrations, and even in physical violence. During this period, Janes observes, the wider culture was preoccupied with the idea of pollution caused by improper sexuality. The Anglo-Catholics had formulated a spiritual ethic that linked goodness and beauty. Their opponents saw this visual worship as dangerously sensual. In effect, this sacred material culture was seen as a sexual fetish. The origins of this understanding, Janes shows, lay in radical circles, often in the context of the production of anti-Catholic pornography which titillated with the contemplation of images of licentious priests, nuns, and monks.

Book excerpt: The Continuing Anglican Movement is made up of those who strive to "continue" in the way of traditional Anglicanism, which many feel the American Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada have abandoned in their Prayer Book reforms, policies regarding the ordination of women, the full inclusion of gays and lesbians, and other issues. This is the only full-length history of the Continuing Anglican movement in the United States and Canada, an engaging, fascinating, and often painful ecclesial saga-available once again in a new edition from the Apocryphile Press.
