Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Angler's Guide: The Most Complete and Practical Ever Written It must be known also, that there are numbers of Anglers who very seldom catch any fish. The Author could give many rather laughable instances; one only must suffice. He had been, upon one occasion, fishing for roach in the West India Dock, and on leav ing was overtaken by a party who had been fishing there too. They asked him if he had had any sport; he said, Yes, and held up his handkerchief, in which his bag of fish was tied. One of the party just took it from his hand to feel its weight, and holding it up in the air, said to one of his companions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglers and Muscleheads IN an age of specialists Captain Torn Gifford has conformed to the trend. There may be a few who have fished with him during his half-century as an offshore guide who will insist that this represents Tom's sole gesture toward anything remotely resembling conformity. Tom Gifford is a specialist in the broad field of big-game angling and is generally recognized as the number-one man in that field. He attained this stature as a result of his stubborn refusal to accept any angling practice until he had experimented with others. Many of the methods and practices and much of the most valuable equipment employed in big-game angling today can be attributed to his efforts. The offshore angler who is accustomed to an indifferent, bored, and routine-bound guide will be rather awed and per haps intimidated by Gifford's intense and concentrated attitude. Once outside the inlet or harbor his eyes are never still. They sweep constantly from the cockpit to the tackle, the angler, the sky, and the water. They note the activity of every bird. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Angler and the Loop-Rod But the distinctive features of the book are the prominence which it gives to the art of fishing with what may be styled the loop-rod and line, and the pre-eminence which it claims for such over the ordinary appliances of jointed-rod and reel. Not that these latter should be entirely discarded indeed, in certain circumstances they alone are admissible - but my experience of both has gone to show that, for the most part, in ordinary trout fishing, the loop-rod and line are immeasurably superior in everything that makes for skilful and successful angling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Angler Another of our tasks was the preparation of ingredients for ren dering the baits more enticing to the fish, though I believe, after reading several receipts, and trying to prepare some of the pre scriptions, a small piece of camphor put into the moss with the worms was all that was ever actually carried into e 'ect. Then we were to have a small box with gimblet holes bored in it, in which a quantity of worms were to be placed, and when this box was sunk (a stone being put in it for the purpose) the worms, as a for lorn hope to escape drowning, it was supposed would crawl out through the holes, and so entice all the fish in the neighbourhood to the spot; to our certain benefit, as to their just as certain de struction. The worms also had to be dug (for we did not then even presume to think of y fishing) and kept in moss, which was to be managed to the very letter according to the directions laid down in Walton. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Open Creel Fishing is very like the other pursuits of men, com pact of ill and good, the good being, as we think, not too lavishly bestowed on some of us. The season of any given angler (i except those prodigious fellows who never have a blank, who think in dozens and stones, and who cannot but come to a bad piscatorial end) is a calculable affair. Of the total number of his days, probably two-thirds will give him no results worth mentioning. Three-quarters of the rest will be of the type conveniently labelled as fair to middling. And there may be two or three days of really fine sport, days about which he at once writes articles. An article or so may be written about days of the second class, but about those of the first there is a grim silence. Hence the number of fish in a book on fishing. Francis Francis, I believe, once dryly remarked to an ecstatic angler who was eloquent upon the beauties of nature and the unimportance of slaughter that it doubtless was so, but he himself had noticed a kind of prejudice in favour of a brace of fish in the creel. He was quite right, of course. We all go out to catch fish. Circumstances make it harder for us to do so year by year; there are more of us, and waters are no more numerous, less rather, while fish grow daily more experienced. Therefore we probably do not expect to catch so much as did our fathers, and the sort of day which they would have regarded as middling is received by us in humble thankfulness as a glorious occasion. The standard of expectation is decidedly lower than it used to be.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trout and How to Catch Them For instance, the method of fishing a lee shore of a loch, casting with the wind, is a very telling dodge not known to the generality of anglers. I consider that it is very good of Mr Castle to pass on his discoveries, for many highly skilled anglers rather incline to keep their particular methods secret. I have fished per dies fesios for over fifty years - sticklebacks to whales - from back parts of China to the American continent. From the Arctic to the Antarctic. Owing to such experience the author has asked me to write this short pre face, which I do with goodwill to the author and other anglers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern fly-fishing is only the latest chapter in a two-millennia saga of technological creativity and passionate observation of the natural world. In Fly-Fishing Secrets of the Ancients, historian-naturalist Paul Schullery explores the earlier chapters in that saga and unearths a host of provocative theories, techniques, and insights that helped shape the modern fly-fisher. Schullery demonstrates that whether we're looking for a good fish story, a clearer understanding of why we fish the way we do, or even a way to improve our own sport, we ignore our elders at our peril. Fly-Fishing Secrets of the Ancients offers the beginning fly-fisher an unprecedented opportunity to come to terms with some of the sport's most fundamental theoretical and practical challenges. It offers the expert fly-fisher a chance to test current angling dogma--and his or her own pet theories--against that of the sport's greatest past masters. And it offers all readers a fresh, probing, and often-humorous take on the great endless fish story we perpetuate and enrich every time we cast a fly.
