Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the firsthand accounts of German, French, British, and American front-line soldiers, No Man's Land examines how the first modern, industrialized war transformed the character of the men who participated in it. Ancient myths about war eroded in the trenches, where the relentless monotony and impotence of the solder's life was interrupted only by unpredictable moments of annihilation. Professor Leed looks at how the traumatic experience of combat itself and the wholesale shattering of the conventions and ethical codes of normal social life turned ordinary civilians into 'liminal men', men living beyond the limits of the accepted and the expected. He uses the concept of liminality to illuminate the central features of the war experience: the separation from 'home': the experience of pollution, death, comradeship, and 'the uncanny': and the ambivalence of returning veterans about civilian society. In a final chapter Professor Leed assesses the long-term political impact of the front experience. He finds that the end of hostilities did not mean the end of the war experience as much as the beginning of a process by which that experience was framed, institutionalized, celebrated and relived in political action as well as in fiction.

Book excerpt: History is a sequence of events from the past leading us to the present. Family History is where we came from and how we got here. More often than not those two paths converge and become a composite history we live each and every day, interacting with the world around us. This history forms and molds us into what we become and when were gone, how we will be remembered, however fleeting that may be. For a Christian how we interact with the world is defined by Christ and should be a defining feature of our personality. Pointedly, we are to be both salt and light. Salt preserves and light displaces darkness. This task has never been more difficult as we are slowly enveloped by a culture that preserves nothing good, extols the bad while seeking to snuff out the light. As believers we more and more find ourselves as Christ warned; hated and reviled, just as He was. At some nearly subliminal level I think many Americans feel this void as more and more of our culture seeks to eradicate God and replace it with secular Humanism. They feel the unnatural movement towards anarchy. It can be stopped or at least abated, only if we are willing to look at where we were and how we got here. This book attempts to retrace those steps leading to this amoral abyss.

Alexander, Chris Bishop, David Budgen, Lewis Call, Lillian Céspedes González, Dominic Davies, Sean Eedy, Adam Fotos, Michael Goodrum, Simon Gough, David Hitchcock, Robert Hutton, Iain A. MacInnes, Małgorzata Olsza, Philip Smith, Edward Still, and Jing Zhang In Drawing the Past, Volume 2: Comics and the Historical Imagination in the World, contributors seek to examine the many ways in which history worldwide has been explored and (re)represented through comics and how history is a complex construction of imagination, reality, and manipulation. Through a close analysis of such works as V for Vendetta, Maus, and Persepolis, this volume contends that comics are a form of mediation between sources (both primary and secondary) and the reader. Historical comics are not drawn from memory but offer a nonliteral interpretation of an object (re)constructed in the creator’s mind. Indeed, when it comes to history, stretching the limits of the imagination only serves to aid in our understanding of the past and, through that understanding, shape ourselves and our futures. This volume, the second in a two-volume series, is divided into three sections: History and Form, Historical Trauma, and Mythic Histories. The first section considers the relationship between history and the comic book form. The second section engages academic scholarship on comics that has recurring interest in the representation of war and trauma. The final section looks at mythic histories that consciously play with events that did not occur but nonetheless inflect our understanding of history. Contributors to the volume also explore questions of diversity and relationality, addressing differences between nations and the cultural, historical, and economic threads that bind them together, however loosely, and however much those bonds might chafe. Together, both volumes bring together a range of different approaches to diverse material and feature remarkable scholars from all over the world.

Careful thought and superior leadership are his main qualities, but he is also a risk-taker and an opportunist. Balancing these traits successfully is one of his main strengths. We are now in the fourth instalment of The Angel of Jena's great adventures. Paul continues to defeat all the challenges that block his path, but not without many struggles. He must fight against the tenacious Bonaparte yet again. The famous Battle of Waterloo will be recast before your eyes. You will be there. You will see and smell the battle as it really was. As Paul grows older his challengers grow bigger, not easier. The more he succeeds, the higher the stakes become. This is the way it is with larger-than-life characters. Paul will reshape history in ways that can hardly be foreseen. Tsar Alexander I will bind Paul as his son-in-law in an amazing plan that involves Paul in faking the Tsar's death. The book marks the climax of Paul Brandt's life, but it prepares his descendants to play their parts. You will meet Paul's grandson, Dr Otto Angel Brandt. He will be embroiled in the Franco-Prussian war and the Spanish succession. You will meet General Prim and see history untold. Paul teaches the next generations so that nothing he has worked for will be lost. His family will learn from these memoirs and conduct their lives as successful and good citizens.

Book excerpt: This book is the product of both historical and personal interest in the grounds of religious conviction. It deals with the practice and development of the tradition of 'discernment of spirits' in the late fourteenth-century England and sixteenth-century Spain as reflected in the classical texts of the mystics of the periods; Julian of Norwich, the Cloud Author and Walter Hilton in England and Ignatius of Loyola and John of the Cross in Spain. The tradition of 'discernment' came into being at the very beginning of the Church's history and has been appropriated, adapted and developed throughout its history. The book explores how the tradition is expanded and maintains continuity with its origins and suggests that it reaches some apogee in sixteenth-century Spain for Christian lives of apostolic mission and contemplation. It illustrates how the cultural circumstances of the times moulded the manner in which the experiences of the mystics were perceived. 'Discernment of Spirits' is about how Christians reach some conviction that the stirrings within consciousness which seem to originate so strangely, and yet beckon so persistently, are 'real' in the sense of authentically divine. They are stirrings which call for a response in the lives of mystics. Rowan Williams at the beginning of his influential book, The Wound of Knowledge, refers to 'the intractable strangeness of the ground of belief that must constantly be allowed to challenge the fixed assumptions of religiosity; it is a given whose question to each age is fundamentally one and the same'. This book illustrates how the question is addressed in the texts of the mystics. In our own time the strange stirrings which intimate the question tend to be drowned by a multiplicity of competing voices. The suggestion is made that when we listen to the voices of the past we may be encouraged to wonder about the question posed by the stirrings within our own consciousness, hitherto unheard or dismissed as simply 'strange'.
