When you’re out of breath, do you pant, puff, pank, tift or thock? The words we use (and the sounds we make when we use them) are more often than not a product of where we live, and An Atlas of English Dialects shows the reader where certain words, sounds and phrases originate from and why usage varies from region to region. The Atlas includes: ninety maps showing the regions in which particular words, phrases and pronunciations are used detailed commentaries explaining points of linguistic, historical and cultural interest explanations of linguistic terms, a bibliography for further reading and a full index. Based on the Survey of English Dialects – the most extensive record of English regional speech – the Atlas is a fascinating and informative guide to the diversity of the English Language in England.
Book Synopsis Celtic Music and Dance in Cornwall by : Lea Hagmann
Download or read book Celtic Music and Dance in Cornwall written by Lea Hagmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the Cornish Music and Dance Revival, this book investigates the revivalists’ claims about Cornwall’s cultural distinctiveness and Celtic heritage, both which are presently used as arguments to promote the English county’s political status as an independent Celtic nation. The author describes two different revival movements that aim at reviving Cornwall’s culture but seem to have entirely different ideas about the concept of authentic Celto-Cornish music and dance. In the first part, historical sources connect Cornwall to its Celtic roots, with an analysis of how the early Cornish revivalists used, changed and adapted this material during the 1980s in order to create a Celto-Cornish revival corpus. In the second part, the book addresses the desire of the Cornish people to express their local and Celtic identities through music and dance, and various practices musicians and dancers have developed to do so. The Nos Lowen movement, which started in the year 2000, is important in this study because it has expanded and newly interpreted the concepts of ‘traditional’, ‘Celtic’ and ‘authentic’.

Book Synopsis English Historical Linguistics by : Bettelou Los
Download or read book English Historical Linguistics written by Bettelou Los and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume drawn from the 20th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (ICEHL, Edinburgh 2018) focuses on the role of language contact in the history of English. It showcases a wide variety of historical linguistic approaches, including ‘big data’ analyses of large corpora, dialectological methods, and the study of translated texts. It also breaks new ground by applying relevant insights from other fields, among them postcolonial linguistics and anthropology. This pluralistic approach brings new and under-studied issues within the scope of explanation, and challenges some long-held assumptions about the nature of historical change in English. The volume will be of interest to an audience interested in the history of English, and the impact of its contact with Viking Age Norse, Old French, and Latin.
