Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestor Makhno (1888 û 1934) was a peasant anarcho-communist who organized an experiment in anarchist values and practice in southeast Ukraine during the Russian Revolutions of 1917 and the subsequent Civil War (1917-1921). The Ukrainian Revolution describes the guerilla war launched by Makhno and his anarchist companions in 1918 against the brutal German-Austrian occupation forces and their puppet State, the Hetmanate. The Makhnovists started off with no money and no weapons. Six months later they controlled 70 raions (counties) in southeast Ukraine and had put together an army which could engage their powerful enemies in a war of fronts, defending the liberated zone. Makhno vividly describes the birth of this revolutionary army, which aimed not just to overthrow the oppressors but to proceed to the solution of the social question along the lines of anarchist principles. This is the first English edition of the third volume of Makhno's memoirs. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis No Harmless Power by : Charlie Allison
Download or read book No Harmless Power written by Charlie Allison and published by . This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lively, incendiary, and inspiring, No Harmless Power follows the life of Nestor Makhno, who organized a seven-million-strong anarchist polity during the Russian Civil War and developed Platformist anarchism during his exile in Paris as well as advising other anarchists like Durruti on tactics and propaganda. Both timely and timeless, this biography reveals Makhno's rapidly changing world and his place in it. He moved swiftly from peasant youth to prisoner to revolutionary anarchist leader, narrowly escaping Bolshevik Ukraine for Paris. This book also chronicles the friends and enemies he made along the way: Lenin, Trotsky, Kropotkin, Alexander Berkman, Emma Goldman, Ida Mett, and others. No Harmless Power is the first text to fully delve into Makhno's sympathy for the downtrodden, the trap of personal heroism, his improbable victories, unlikely friendships, and his alarming lack of gun safety in meetings. Makhno and the movement he began are seldom mentioned in most mainstream histories--Western or Russian--mostly on the grounds that acknowledging anarchist polities calls into question the inevitability and desirability of the nation-state and unjust hierarchies. With illustrations by N.O. Bonzo and Kevin Matthews, this is a fresh, humorous, and necessary look at an under examined corner of history as well as a deep exploration of the meaning--and value, if any--of heroism as history.

Book excerpt: It was in prison in 1911 that Peter Arshinov established a close personal and political friendship with Makhno, which continued after their release following the February Revolution in 1917. In 1919 Arshinov became Makhno’s secretary, and remained with the Makhnovists until 1921. In 1922 he settled in Berlin and published the Russian edition of his story. Arshinov’s history of the Makhnovists is undoubtedly the most important source work available. Download or read book Kontrrazvedka written by Vyacheslav Azarov and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Makhnovist movement was an attempt by peasants in southeastern Ukraine to create an anarchist society in 1917–1921. This unique social experiment embraced a substantial territory with a population of millions but has been little studied by historians. In the years of revolution and civil war, the movement was protected from its numerous enemies by a remarkable military force—the Insurgent Army—and by an intelligence service—the Kontrrazvedka. It is the latter institution which is the subject of this study by Vyacheslav Azarov, a present-day Ukrainian anarchist.
