Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Non-Ferrous Alloys It is probable that a true estimate of the importance and degree of self-realisation of a subject (or branch of a subject) may be found in the literature to which it gives rise. Judging the analytical chemistry of the non-ferrous alloys from this point of view, it may be seen at once that its importance is of very recent growth, and that even now it is very far behind its sister-rival, the chemistry of the ferrous alloys. Fortunately there are abundant signs that the makers and users of non-ferrous alloys are determined to utilise scientific knowledge and progress to a much greater extent than formerly, and the first essential in any of these advances is accurate chemical analysis. This has resulted in the appearance of a large mass of scattered information in the technical and chemical journals. Generally these have had in view two aims - first, accuracy combined with convenience; and secondly, accuracy combined with speed. Anyone who has worked through the analysis of an alloy by the methods outlined in the standard text-books of practical chemistry will realise at once that the time-honoured processes, redolent of unlimited time and sulphuretted hydrogen, fulfil neither of these two conditions. The aim of this book is to bring within the covers of one volume the methods which in the authors' opinion and experience combine as far as possible both these qualifications in the highest degree. A further aim has been to make possible the estimation of one element without the tedious separation from every other element which so often occurs in the older text-books. In view of the huge number of original papers that have appeared and are still appearing on this subject, this book cannot be more than a milestone on the road to greater accuracy and higher speed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technical Analysis of Brass, and Non-Ferrous Alloys At the time the first edition of this book was brought out the chemist or metallurgist who wished to find accurate and quick methods for the analysis of the non-ferrous alloys was obliged to look for the various methods as well as the description of special apparatus in the transactions of societies, scientific journals and works on general analytical chemistry, in which the different methods were widely distributed. So far as we are aware this was the first time that any chemists or metallurgists had made an attempt to bring together in one volume a complete treatment of this subject and it was our hope that this little book would take a place in nonferrous chemistry and metallurgy corresponding to the place occupied by Blair's "Chemical Analysis of Iron," in the ferrous metals. In preparing the second edition of our book considerable of the text has been rewritten and many changes made, based on the helpful criticisms of the first edition and an effort has been made to bring this edition strictly up to date. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alloys (Non-Ferrous) The object which the author had in view in the prepara tion of this book was to provide for students, and more particularly for makers and users of alloys, a brief account of some of the advances which have recently been made in the study of Alloys. His object has not been in any sense to provide a complete account of what has been done, but rather to indicate the direction in which research is going on, and to give to the maker and user of alloys such information as may be of practical utility, and which will enable him to clearly understand the current literature of the subject, and to see in what direction he must look for further developments that may be of use to him. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER II APPARATUS FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS Many metals can be more conveniently determined electrolytically than by any other method, and means for carrying out such determinations should be provided in every well-equipped metallurgical laboratory, no matter how small it may be. In determining copper, nickel, bismuth, etc., the electrolytic methods are far more satisfactory than the precipitation or volumetric ones, hence in a laboratory where bearing metals or alloys are analyzed means should be provided for electrolytic work. Use of the Electric Lighting Current. ? Stillwell and Austin1 were, we believe, the first to suggest the use of the electric lighting current for the determination of metals in the electrolytic way, and the writers have found this to be not only sufficient for ordinary technical purposes but also by far the most convenient. When available, it is much cheaper than batteries and saves the operator much trouble. The only disadvantage in connection with its use is the constant voltage, which is usually 110 or 220. Indirect or alternating currents must of course be transformed to direct currents. This necessitates the use of a convertorwhich may make the cost of installation of the outfit for electrolytic work so great as to make the use of batteries preferable to that of the electric lighting current. 1 Jour. Anal, and App. Chem., VI, 129. It is of course necessary to reduce the voltage of the current. For this purpose the resistance board shown in Fig. 1 and designed by one of the authors is convenient and satisfactory. It consists of a stout board 2 inches thick and 24 inches by 8 inches. This board should have its top covered Kg. 1. with a piece of asbestos board, to guard against fire, etc., so that the apparatus may be left overni...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Alloys Prepared by William Campbell for Committee B-2 on Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys The subject of nomenclature is one of some difficulty. Brass has been defined as an alloy of copper with zinc as the principal alloying metal, whereas bronze is a copper alloy in which tin is the chief added element, and yet it is the custom to call red brass by the name of bronze. Again, Tobin bronze, manganese bronze, etc., are, properly speaking, brasses. While this list is primarily one of non-ferrous alloys, there have been added a few examples of what are, properly speaking, iron alloys (in contra-distinction to steel) in which the properties are dependent on the added elements, as, for example, in the list of non-corrosive alloys and of the heat-resisting alloys as well as those used for resist ance purposes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sampling and Chemical Analysis of Iron and Steel During many years of service in the Royal Testing Bureau the authors have noticed again and again how carelessly and often quite unscientifically the sampling of iron and steel for chemical analysis is carried out. The practical man usually assumes that the material for analysis has the same composition throughout its entire cross-section and that it is immaterial, therefore, where and how the samples are taken. This assumption is often incorrect. The complaints made against chemists, in cases of bad agreement in analytical results, are often unjust because the differences in chemical composition due to segregation are frequently much greater than the possible errors in the analytical procedures. Fortunately, however, with the aid of metallography and the macroscopic study of the structure, the chemist is now able to determine quickly and with certainty whether segregation has taken place. The first part of this book shows, by means of numerous examples taken from metallographic practice, how seriously the analytical results can be influenced by incorrect sampling. Before discussing them, a brief introduction to Metallography is given with a description of the necessary apparatus, the methods of etching, and the characteristic appearance of the different constituents. In the second part, the methods of chemical analysis are given in detail. In collecting these methods the main object has been to include only those methods which have been found reliable and have undergone the test of a number of years' use at the Royal Testing Bureau. They are suitable, therefore, for test and umpire analyses. Descriptions of the very rapid "works methods" are omitted because these processes aim to give quick results rather than values of great accuracy.
