Book excerpt: Alexander Hamilton, the first US Secretary of Treasury, is better revered as one of the founding fathers of the United States. As the Secretary of treasury, Hamilton was the key in molding the economic policies of not only the inaugural government, but also for its successors. He was vital in the frame work of US Coast Guard, Federalist party and also ‘The New York Post’ news paper. He had a tough role as the first secretary of treasury which was appointed by George Washington, as the country had a perilous financial condition. He formulated the government backed Bank of United States to fund the national debts and new tariffs on imports. Alexander Hamilton founded the basics of the now strong US economy. Here in the book ‘The Analects of Alexander Hamilton’, we have the largest collection of his quotes...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greatest American Alexander Hamilton: An Historical Analysis of His Life and Works Together With a Symposium of Opinions by Distinguished Americans I present this study to the American people in the profound hope that, by virtue of its novelty if not its merits, it may challenge some new measure of popular attention to the history of the United States. The greater our common familiarity with the sacrifices, the hardships, the heroisms, the martyrdoms, the aspirations, the evolutions, the visions, the victories that have made America, the greater will be our common respect for the con sequent institutions that are our fortunate inherit ance. By the same token, lack of one breeds lack of the other; and we are suffering today an unhappy poverty in both. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: the House a long and eager debate ensued as to the mention which their address should contain concerning this clause of the message. The democratic societies found no friends who dared to come forward and openly name and defend them. The opposition leaders could not make up their minds to this. Yet the vague and general language which had been used made a covert defence possible. The Federalists sought to make it a battle for and against the democratic clubs; the opposition strove to make it a contest concerning the general right of the people to form voluntary associations, and to discuss the measures of an administration. It may be fairly considered that the result was a drawn battle. But one important fact at least was made clear, and that was that the democratic societies could find no one among their supposed political friends who was willing to advocate them without disguise. The discredit which was thus brought upon them was happily aided by the overthrow of the Jacobin club itself, at Paris, which opportunely occurred about this time. Thus, after having been the cause of much trouble and yet having actually accomplished nothing, this longest- lived fruit of the labors of Genet in the United States withered away and fell out of sight, within about eighteen mouths after the close of his mission. chapter{Section 4CHAPTER IV. THE WHISKEY INSURRECTION. In that first and famous report upon the public credit which Hamilton made to Congress in January, 1790, he recommended the laying of duties upon spirits of domestic manufacture, and upon stills. So many other and more immediately interesting topics were discussed in this report, that the proposition for the establishment of an excise tax attracted comparatively small attention. When, however, it was touched upon in the...

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ADDRESSES' New Y0rk, February 18, 1789. To the Supervisors of the City of Albany, in the County of Albany. Gentlemen: ?The last Tuesday of April next being the day appointed by law for the election of a governor for the ensuing three years, the great importance of making a wise choice in the present peculiar situation of our local and national affairsappears to have made a deep impression on the minds of considerate men in the different parts of the State. 1 The Constitution having been ratified by the necessary number of States, the Federalists everywhere made the utmost efforts to elect Senators and Congressmen who were favorable to the new scheme. Nowhere was their task more difficult than in New York. The contest in the Convention had been very severe, and the ratification had been carried only by sheer force of argument and outside pressure. The head and front of the opposition was Governor Clinton, a man with a very great personal following, of strong will and much ability. Hamilton threw himself into the conflict with his usual zeal. He travelled through the State, and published the address given above; and, not content with this, he sought to break down Clinton and defeat his reelection. With this object he published a second address and the letters of H. G., which follow, and which are a sustained attack upon the Governor's whole course and attitude. Clinton was re, elected by a majority of less than 500, but his power was fatally crippled, and the opposition was demoralized as Hamilton desired. The Federalists on their side obtained four out of the six Congressmen, and subsequently the two Senators. These addresses and the letters of H. G. are not of course constitutional arguments, but they are an important part of the work which Hamilton did for the C..

Since the founding of the nation, these essays have been used by the U.S. Supreme Court as an authoritative guide to the intentions of the Founding Fathers in cases involving constitutional interpretation. Included in this volume are five of the most important essays from The Federalist Papers, plus personal correspondence and public statements from across Hamilton’s career as a statesman.

They belong in no class; no one seeks a place near them, or challenges even a possible comparison with them. It is only after we have established them in this grand and undisputed isolation that we try to put our other statesmen into ranks and classes according to our judgment of their capacity and their services. This attitude of these two men is a peculiarity in our annals distinguishing us from other peoples. No other nation has heroes filling quite the like relationship. The nearest approach to it is furnished by William of Orange. Neither Julius Caesar nor Napoleon Bonaparte are parallel instances, though they overshadowed respectively all other Romans and Frenchmen; they were greater than others, yet they could be compared and measured with others. But this cannot be done with either Washington or Lincoln, because, apart from greatness, they are different from others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political Theories of Alexander Hamilton Alexander Hamilton, beyond most of his contemporaries, had clearly defined views regarding the nature of the state, government and laws. In their general outlines his ideas are well known. Until now, however, there has been no attempt to make an exhaustive analysis and logical statement of his theories. This the present essay seeks to do. Especial thanks are due to Dr. W. W. Willoughby, without whose kind and unfailing assistance this work would not have been possible. For some in the academy, deconstruction, and Jacques Derrida in particular, are responsible for the demise of accountability in the study of literature. Countering these facile dismissals of Derrida and deconstruction, Herman Rapaport explores the incoherence that has plagued critical theory since the 1960s and the resulting legitimacy crisis in the humanities. Against the backdrop of a rich, informed discussion of Derrida's writings -- and how they have been misconstrued by critics and admirers alike -- The Theory Mess investigates the vicissitudes of Anglo-American criticism over the past thirty years and proposes some possibilities for reform.

Book excerpt: Alexander Hamilton This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Alexander Hamilton, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is now many years ago that I first conceived the purpose of writing a Life of Alexander Hamil ton. The undertaking was repeatedly postponed with the intention of awaiting some period of lei sure; but as from year to year the prospect of that period seemed to recede rather than to approach I at last despaired of its ever arriving, and some four years ago entered upon my task without farther delay, and have since prosecuted it in such intervals as I could snatch from professional occupation. Doubtless the work could have been much better done by some student of American history who could have devoted his unbroken days to the topic, and made it the sole object of his reading and reflection. But as none such has appeared in nearly three quarters of a century, I have ventured to make my effort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER V. THE LIFE AND EPOCH. IJ774.] /ETAT. 17. CHAPTER V. [i774.] It was in truth an Epoch. Many things had been engendered which, in other days and other lands, gave birth to great arguments and noble deeds. It saw established the Episcopal order in America, and the minds of the colonists reconciled to its introduction ? it influenced the origin, but not the crimes of the French Revolution ? it began the argument which ended in the restoration of the trial by jury in cases of criminal prosecution for libel; and initiated the moral force which, overcoming the prejudices and law enactments of centuries, emancipated the Catholics of Ireland. The social and political history of those times, which preceded, and by a series of evolving events developed, the revolutionary spirit which brought about the separation of the American colonies from the crown of England has, in its controversial literary phases, yet to be written. When written it will discover to practical statesmen sources of political wisdom which, in our present days of vague impulse and unpropor- tioned thought, should not willingly be neglected. It was, as we have said before,1 an epoch in which the civil law regained for a time its liberal dominion over the minds of a race of intelligent men. It was an epoch in which the undying principles of the ancient Saxon constitution of Alfred were restored, and became the foundation of a new form of government: reestablishing that ancient heritage for the children of his ancient race. Men were taught again to look beyond the Magna Charta for the fresh well-springs of their inalienable, absolute rights, and for the regulations of an orderly liberty, ? were reminded that liberty itself was better understood and more fully enjoyed by their ancestors before the...

Book excerpt: Written by Hamilton himself to confess to the affair he conducted with Maria Reynolds, Alexander Hamilton: Adultery and Apology is Hamilton’s attempt to defend and rationalize his misdoings, and ultimately salvage what was left of his reputation. The pamphlet was originally published in 1796 after accusations of the adultery arose. This personal exposé reveals a man, whom the public initially revered as a politician and Founding Father, as a flawed human-being. Within these documents Hamilton describes his exploits in impeccable detail and languid prose, at the risk of tarnishing his public image, to prove to the public that he had nothing to hide. With a new foreword by Robert Watson, presidential scholar and author of Affairs of State, delve into this exquisite, essential account of history’s most scandalous love affairs.
