Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Physics - Theoretical Physics, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: This work uses findings to generate a set of simple dimensionless equations, one of which yields the maximum amplitude of oscillation of the system at dissociation. The equations incorporate experimental data which are widely available and a set of such data for simple molecules is presented at the conclusion of the work. The simplicity of the equations developed is exemplified by that for the maximum amplitude of oscillation, Xe, when the system encounters an incoming photon possessing the magnitude of the dissociation energy, De, of the molecule, i.e. (Xe/R) = 2 sqrt(De.Be)/We. Here, R is the bond length, We, the energy of the photon which raises the system from the ground state to the first excited state, and Be is the bond rotational constant. It is suggested that the simple expressions developed here have their application in the violent events associated with dissociation in shock waves and/or high energy particles emanating from stellar collapse and hence may be of utility in these areas of astrophysical modelling.

Book excerpt: Well respected and widely used, this volume presents problems and full solutions related to a wide range of topics in thermodynamics, statistical physics, and statistical mechanics. The text is intended for instructors, undergraduates, and graduate students of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering. Twenty-eight chapters, each prepared by an expert, proceed from simpler to more difficult subjects. Similarly, the early chapters are easier than the later ones, making the book ideal for independent study. Subjects begin with the laws of thermodynamics and statistical theory of information and of ensembles, advancing to the ideal classical gases of polyatomic molecules, non-electrolyte liquids and solutions, and surfaces. Subsequent chapters explore imperfect classical and quantum gas, phase transitions, cooperative phenomena, Green function methods, the plasma, transport in gases and metals, Nyquist's theorem and its generalizations, stochastic methods, and many other topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the way in which quantum theory has become central to our understanding of the behaviour of atoms and molecules. It looks at the way in which this underlies so many of the experimental measurements we make, how we interpret those experiments and the language which we use to describe our results. It attempts to provide an account of the quantum theory and some of its applications to chemistry. This book is for researchers working on experimental aspects of chemistry and the allied sciences at all levels, from advanced undergraduates to experienced research project leaders, wishing to improve, by self-study or in small research-orientated groups, their understanding of the ways in which quantum mechanics can be applied to their problems. The book also aims to provide useful background material for teachers of quantum mechanics courses and their students.

Book excerpt: This book contains comprehensive descriptions of stochastic processes described by underdamped and overdamped oscillator equations with additive and multiplicative random forcing. The latter is associated with random frequency or random damping. The coverage includes descriptions of various new phenomena discovered in the last hundred years since the explanation of Brownian motion by Einstein, Smoluchovski and Langevin, such as the shift of stable points, noise-enhanced stability, stochastic resonance, resonant activation, and stabilization of metastable states. In addition to many applications in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, economics and sociology, these discoveries have clarified the deep relationship between determinism and stochasticity, which turns out to be complimentary rather than contradictory, with noise playing both constructive and destructive roles.

Book excerpt: The properties of the harmonic oscillator with random frequency or/and random damping formed the content of the first edition. The second edition includes hundreds of publications on this subject since 2005. The noisy oscillator continues to be the subject of intensive studies in physics, chemistry, biology, and social sciences. The new and the latest type of a stochastic oscillator has also been considered, namely, an oscillator with random mass. Such model describes, among other phenomena, Brownian motion with adhesion, where the molecules of the surrounding medium not only randomly collide, but also stick to the Brownian particle for some (random) time, thereby changing its mass. This edition contains two new chapters, eight new sections and an expanded bibliography. A wide group of researchers, students and teachers will benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: This volume describes the spectral theory of the Weyl quantization of systems of polynomials in phase-space variables, modelled after the harmonic oscillator. The main technique used is pseudodifferential calculus, including global and semiclassical variants. The main results concern the meromorphic continuation of the spectral zeta function associated with the spectrum, and the localization (and the multiplicity) of the eigenvalues of such systems, described in terms of “classical” invariants (such as the periods of the periodic trajectories of the bicharacteristic flow associated with the eiganvalues of the symbol). The book utilizes techniques that are very powerful and flexible and presents an approach that could also be used for a variety of other problems. It also features expositions on different results throughout the literature.

Book excerpt: The investigation ofmost problems of quantum physics leads to the solution of the Schrodinger equation with an appropriate interaction Hamiltonian or potential. However, the exact solutions are known for rather a restricted set of potentials, so that the standard eternal problem that faces us is to find the best effective approximation to the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation under consideration. In the most general form, this problem can be formulated as follows. Let a total Hamiltonian H describing a relativistic (quantum field theory) or a nonrelativistic (quantum mechanics) system be given. Our problem is to solve the Schrodinger equation Hlft = Enlftn, n i. e. , to find the energy spectrum {En} and the proper wave functions {lft } n including the'ground state or vacuum lft = 10). The main idea of any ap o proximation technique is to find a decomposition in such a way that Ha describes our physical system in the "closest to H" manner, and the Schrodinger equation HolJt. (O) = E(O)lJt. (O) n n n can be solved exactly. The interaction Hamiltonian HI is supposed to give small corrections to the zero approximation which can be calculated. In this book, we shall consider the problem of a strong coupling regime in quantum field theory, calculations ofpath or functional integrals over the Gaussian measure and spectral problems in quantum mechanics. Let us con sider these problems briefly.

The early chapters offer a comprehensive discussion of problems involving from one to four particles and the n-particle problem in the Hartree-Fock approximation, with extensive use of the transformation brackets for harmonic oscillator coefficients and related concepts. The application of harmonic oscillator states to scattering problems is also discussed, as is the group theory underlying the harmonic oscillator and its application to the Coulomb problem, collective motions in nuclei, and relativistic many body problems with oscillator interactions. Written by two internationally-recognized experts in the field, this book will serve as an essential resource for the serious graduate student as well as the professional physicist or mathematician.
