Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Oxonian, Vol. 7: The Official Magazine of the Alumni Association of American Rhodes Scholars While most of the social activities were confined to the college circles, as is always true in Oxford, nevertheless quite a number of men were found on Sundays and at other times in the homes of North Oxford. Although there was no organized endeavor on the part of the people of Oxford to entertain the Americans, as I was told there had been at Cambridge and other places where Americans were practically unknown before, yet a number of families extended their hospitality to the students individually. Sir William and Lady Osler, Mr. And Mrs. Wylie, and Miss Crocker were among the favorite hosts and hostesses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Oxonian, Vol. 5: The Official Magazine of the Alumni Association of American Rhodes Scholars We may hope, too, that the experiences of the War will drive home to members of the University that don and undergraduate are fel low-workers for the same cause. In some Colleges in the past the senior members of the College, settled in Oxford for life, tended to live their lives as a caste apart, feeling no sympathy for and asking no sympathy from the passing crowd of undergraduates. This is a car dinal error. The friendship of a good tutor can do far more for the education of his pupil than any instruction he may give. And the friendship of the younger men helps to keep the tutor's mind sane and vigorous. The Visits of our soldier pupils during the War have pointed a way for the advancement of the social life both of the younger and the older members of the University. Before the War there was a lamentable tendency at some Colleges for the old Oxford custom whereby the high table repaired to Common Room to drink port to be more honored in the breach than the Observance; in other words, the social life of the Fellows of a College was tending to dis appear. It is to be hoped that after the War Common Room life will be restored, and that by the more frequent presence Of undergraduates at wine it will be used as an opportunity for increased intercourse between teacher and taught. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major work, Lewis S. Feuer examines critical distinctions between progressive and regressive imperialism. He explores causes of anti-imperial ideologies, noting that unlike the spoliation that took place under regressive tartar, Spanish and Nazi colonizations, civilization flourished during the progressive imperialism of Hellenic, Macedonian, Roman, and modern British eras of empire-building. Feuer holds that it is erroneous to blame the relative backwardness of colonial peoples on the imperialism of Western democratic nations. In case after case, the character of colonial rulers determined economic development and democratic reform alike. Pursuing the theme of progress versus regression, Feuer compares the imperialism of the United States with that of the Soviet Union – to the detriment of the latter in nearly every instance. His effort constitutes nothing short of a fundamentally new perspective on the lessons of modern history and the mistakes of modern analysts of international affairs. Feuer opens as well a new chapter in political psychology with his study of such anti-imperialist intellectuals as Hobson, Morel, and Leonard Woolf; his portrait of Emin Pasha, the heroic Jewish governor of Equatorial Sudan, suggests a living model for Conrad's Lord Jim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of F. Scott Fitzgerald's creation of Jay Gatsby—war hero and Oxford man—at the beginning of the Jazz Age, when the City of Dreaming Spires attracted an astounding array of intellectuals, including the Inklings, W.B. Yeats, and T.S. Eliot. A diverse group of Americans came to Oxford in the first quarter of the twentieth century—the Jazz Age—when the Rhodes Scholar program had just begun and the Great War had enveloped much of Europe. Scott Fitzgerald created his most memorable character—Jay Gatsby—shortly after his and Zelda’s visit to Oxford. Fitzgerald’s creation is a cultural reflection of the aspirations of many Americans who came to the University of Oxford. Beginning in 1904, when the first American Rhodes Scholars arrived in Oxford, this book chronicles the experiences of Americans in Oxford through the Great War to the beginning of the Great Depression. This period is interpreted through the pages of The Great Gatsby, producing a vivid cultural history. Archival material covering Scholars who came to Oxford during Trinity Term 1919—when Jay Gatsby claims he studied at Oxford—enables the narrative to illuminate a detailed portrait of what a “historical Gatsby” would have looked like, what he would have experienced at the postwar university, and who he would have encountered around Oxford—an impressive array of artists including W.B. Yeats, Virginia Woolf, Aldous Huxley, and C.S. Lewis.

Book excerpt: A series of 13 essays engage different aspects of Richard Ullmann's work on U.S. foreign and security policy over the years he was teaching at Princeton and Oxford, as well as the time he served in the U.S. government. Presented by Lake (diplomacy, Georgetown U.) and Ochmanek (the RAND corporation), the essays sometimes directly address the work of Ullmann, but more often look at contemporary issues of foreign policy from the lens of the intellectual school that he established. After a appreciation of Ullmann's life and work, essays treat such topics as transatlantic relations after the Cold War, isolationism in U.S. foreign policy, "humanitarian" interventions, and polarization in policy processes. c.
