Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Pharmacy, 1852, Vol. 18: Published by the Authority of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy No scale formed from experiments can be depended upon for accuracy, as a proof of which it is impossible to find two scales so formed agreeing, the error often affecting the first decimal place. The basis upon which Beaume formed his scale was very um fortunately chosen, and gave rise, at an early period, to changes that have completely modified even the theory of his instrument he obtained the zero for his scale for light liquids, or pese esprit, by immersion in water containing ten per cent. Of salt in solution, and the point to which it sunk in pure water he made divid ing the stem into like intervals he obtained the &c., the intermediate degrees by subdivision. The hydrometer for heavy liquids of pese acide was differently adjusted. Water gave and the point to which it sunk in a solution containing fifteen per cent. Of salt, he marked as the interval doubled gave the the next the and so on. Now it is evident that if an error is made in obtaining the first interval, it becomes multiplied in ex tending the scale, and even with the greatest care it would be im possible to obtain two instruments graduated precisely alike; the only reliable plan is to subdivide points obtained at the extremes of the scale, and this has been the practice with the makers since an early period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 29 In the London Journal of Pharmacy, vol. iii, page ICO, will be found an article, by Dr. Alexander Ure, upon the South American bark called the Malambo or Matias bark, a short extract of which will be found in the appendix to the U. S. Dispensatory, page 1849. Dr. Ure states in his paper, that Malambo or Matias bark is the product of a tree in Colombia, S. A., and that it was placed in his hands by Hugh Houston, Esq., which gentleman received it from Dr. Mackay, who communicated, two papers respecting it to the British Association, and mentions having procured from it by distillation two oils, one lighter than water, of a specific gravity 0-949; the other denser, of a specific gravity 1-028. He further obtained a brown, bitter extractive substance. Dr. Mackny remarked, that it had been successfully used in intermittent fever, in convalescence from continued fever, in hemicrania, dyspepsia, and a variety of chronic ailments, where tonics and stimulants were indicated; and that as an adjunct to diuretic remedies, it had been found eminently useful. Dr. Ure describes the Malambo or Matias bark to be three or four lines in thickness, brittle, though somewhat fibrous; emitting when fresh bruised an aromatic flavor, not unlike that of calamus; color of a brown hue, covered with an ash-colored tuberculous epiderm, and possessing a bitter pungent taste. With water it forms an agreeable bitter infusion; with alcohol, a powerful bitter tincture. Ether extracts from it volatile oil and resin. Heated along with hydrate of potash, free ammonia is disengaged, indicating the presence of an azotized principle. It is without astringency. It appears to coincide, as suggested to me b)T M. Guibourt, both in regard to physical and sensible properties, with Malambo, the Indian name for the bark of a tree which grows in New Granada, and which is held in high esteem among the natives as a febrifuge and stomachic. Malambo bark was analysed by M. Cadet Gassicourt, about twenty-eight years ago (Journ. de Pharmacies tom. ii, p. 372); subsequently by M. Vauquelin, who ascertained the presence of three distinct substances, namely: 1. An aromatic volatile oil. 2. A very bitter resin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 15 The second series proved that exhaustion was always difficult and generally imperfect with a coarse powder; and that the finer the powder, the more easy, the more perfect, and consequently the more economical was the exhaustion. The third series proved that the resin precipitated by water only, without acid, could not be separated at all without heat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 37: Published by Authority of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy The writer, having observed the solution of citrate of bismuth, obtained by the addition of ammonia, to have an acid reaction, and also that an excess of that alkali occasioned a precipitate of oxide of bismuth, inferred the existence of a compound salt of bismuth and ammonia; this was subsequently confirmed. The following formulas, suggested by theory and numerous experiments, were finally adopted; Bismuthi Citras. Take of Subcarbonate of Bismuth a troyounce; Citrate of Potassa a troyounce and 120 grains; Nitric Acid a troyounce and a half; Distilled water a sufficient quantity. Dissolve the subcarbonate of bismuth in the nitric acid, and, when effervescence has ceased, dilute the solution with a fluid-ounce and a half of distilled water, gradually added. Dissolve the citrate of potassa in two pints of distilled water, and to this liquid add slowly, with constant stirring, the acid solution of bismuth. Permit the mixture to stand for several hours; then pour it on a moistened paper filter, and, when the liquid has nearly ceased to pass, cover the surface of the precipitate with distilled water. Repeat this operation until the washings no longer contain nitric acid. Allow the magma to drain, and dry it on bibulous paper, with a gentle heat. Bismuthi et Ammoni Citras. Take of Citrate of Bismuth, in powder, a convenient quantity; Stronger Water of Ammonia, Distilled Water, each, a sufficient quantity. Rub the citrate of bismuth with sufficient distilled water to reduce it to a uniform pasty consistence, and add, cautiously, with constant trituration, stronger water of ammonia, until a solution is obtained, observing to avoid an excess of ammonia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 2: April, 1846 It is much to be desired, that the next edition of the Pharmacopoeia may be national 1n detail as well as in name; that its provisions may be sufficiently comprehensive to embrace the well grounded pharmaceutical preferences of different sections, when these are not incompatible with that unity of design and scientific propriety, which should be marked features of a work issuing from so dignified, and learned a body, as it is presumed the convention of 1850 will be. In order to accomplish this, some means must be resorted to, to enable the revisors to appreciate the opinions ofall sections of the Union. It is with a View to this genel ral expression of sentiment, so far as pharmaceutists are concerned, that this essay has been written, hoping that some of its hints may be of service in pointing out a course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 65: January, 1893 Anzyloia'. - A constituent of milk and dairy products. Dr. F. Herz, in a microscopic examination of milk, cream, cheese of various kinds, and even in what is called chemically pure casein, found struc tures which in appearance, size and behavior to iodine showed strik ing similarity to starch. A point of difference was found in the action of boiling water, which failed to gelatinize them; heated they become soft and can be enveloped by casein or gluten, but without forming an intimate mixture, as iodine will sharply define the position'of this substance, called amyloid. It has not been determined if it is a constant constituent of milk nor if it has any bearing upon the use of the milk - Chemiher Ztg., 1892, 1594.
