Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Eclectic Medical Review, Vol. 1: From June, 1866, to June, 1867 The position of eclectics is essentially what it has been since its introduction to the American people and the world. Theoretically and practically, we have rejected, and we do now reject, that wholesale bloodletting which has made up a large share of the treatment of allopathists in all acute diseases. Only a few years since, bloodletting was the rule with the thousands of physicians and writers of this country and of the fatherland. How foolish would any of us have been regarded, twenty years ago, if we had publicly pre dicted that in 1866, bloodletting would not be the general practice in fevers and infiammatiousl But we have kept our faith, our practice has proved itself the right practice, and allopathists themselves do not resort to bleeding in one tenth of the cases in which they formerly did. The teachers of allopathy, the professors in their colleges, still advocate this fatal barbarism, and their graduates far too frequently resort to it. But the common sense of the people, and the superior success of eclectic physicians, have brought the practice into disgraceful contempt, in the honest minds of the American people. Surely, this is a change and a tri umph! A change by which thousands of lives are saved every year, and a triumph to every eclectic who has been struggling for a right to live and to be honored through these twenty years past. And yet allopathic writers, when they prepare articles for their medical journals, or write works on the practice of medicine, like Dr. Flint, recommend bloodletting, though with much discrimination; and England and Scotland have many among her foremost men who hke J. Hughes Bennett, discard almost entirely the lancet. But the profes sors in the medical colleges of New York and Philadelphia the two great centres of medical education in this country all unite in recommending bloodletting; and their satellites, in all the allopathic medical chaim of the land, echo these sentiments from their halls of collegiate instruction. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Eclectic Materia Medica and Therapeutics We claim to be a free and liberal class of physicians, and we do not recognize the right of any man either inside or outside of the Eclec tic ranks to dictate what we shall use or how we Shall use it. Every practitioner is personally responsible for the results of his practice. If he does a patient a wrong by large doses and poisonous effects, he is guilty to the extent of the wrong. If he fails to give relief or save life because of small doses and ineflicient remedies, he is equally guilty. A physician is responsible to his patients in that he agrees to furnish that knowledge and skill which comes from thorough study and close Observation. He can not claim that he has done his whole duty, unless he has been eclectic in fact, choosing from all sources that which to him seems best. Download or read book New Eclectic Medical Practice, Vol. 1 written by Herbert Tracy Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Eclectic Medical Practice, Vol. 1: Designed for Students and Practitioners The author is not aware that an urgent demand has existed for the publication of this book. Indeed, it was not prepared with the impression that the profession was in urgent need of it, or that it would prove a remarkable innovation in the medical world. Medical men will come and go and the world will move on, after these pages have passed into forgetfulness; and time will chroui cle a newer practice - doubtless a better one - when the years have marked the inevitable progress of events. The students of the California Medical College, to whom the author has been something of an authority on practice for the past sixteen years, have frequently importuned him to publish a work which would embody the substance of his lectures, that a text book for ready reference might be had. To satisfy this demand the present volume was begun several years ago. Other duties, however, have delayed the work, and the prospects of its completion at an early date were so poor that at the request of several mem bers of the Class of '99 a first volume has been published, the second to follow within the coming two years. Special pains have been taken in the preparation of the text to dwell on the description of disease, that there may be no need of frequent reference to allopathic works for points on etiology, pathology, symptoms, diagnosis and prognosis. At the same time, it has been the author's aim to render the book as complete as pos sible on that which has been the peculiar merit of Eclectic works on practice in the past, treatment. This instrument is designed for introduction into the vagina; it finds lodgment at its circumference in the soft surrounding tissues supported by the pelvic bones. The form of pessary most in use is that in which the neck of the uterus is allowed to drop through the opening of the instrument, by which means the axis of inclina tion of the organ is in some degree corrected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Journal of Medicine, Vol. 1: From November, 1836, to October, 1837, Inclusive A mention of the Arabian physicians suggests the ideas of astrological medicine, and ofa pharmacy more enriched with mineral preparations than that of the Greek school. Much of what they have written might, without any great loss to medical science, be expunged. But it is equally clear, that a better knowledge oftheir pre cepts and practice in certain diseases would have saved lives without number, in both Europe and America, since their time. Our reference is here more especially to eruptive fevers; and notably to small-pox and measles - though the same princi ples will govern in that large class of fevers marked by critical evacuations from, or determination to the skin. Rqss, who was born about the middle of the ninth century, enjoyed the highest reputation among his countrymen for his extensive and varied knowledge, not only in medicine but in all the sciences. To him we are in debted for a short but admirable treatise on the method of treating small-pox and measles, more particularly the former, which we do not hesitate to declare as among the best extant. The credit given to Sydenham for introducing the cooling regimen in fevers and acute eruptive diseases ought, with still greater reason, both on ao count of long priority and distinctness of direction, to be awarded to the Arabian physician. In his prophylaxis, and in the treatment on the inception of small-pox, and at its increment and decline, Rhazes is, to our mind, a clearer and safer guide than any with whom we are acquainted. These impressions, produced after a perusal of the work during the prevalence of the disease, and at a time when we had charge of a small-pox hospital, are confirmed by another reading since we began this brief notice of the Arabian school.
