Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Dramatist But research requires patience, and one is brought suddenly to a grim realization of its slowness. When this book was begun, A. M. Palmer was alive; during its initial period I profited by the unfailing help and encouragement of Bronson Howard, and later I was made to feel the necessity for such a book through the splendid enthusiasm of Clyde Fitch. Chapters written then have had to be altered because these men are dead. But they are not forgotten even though the literary critic fail to recognize them. The American drama is a fact; it has a body, whatever the value of its spirit. In its local sense, it is a reflection of local condition and type characteristics; in its technical sense, it exhibits special mannerisms, and shows itself subjected to special influences. The American dramatist has evolved from certain social factors, and his product - the American drama - has developed by reason of theatrical economics. There are always definite reasons to be found for every literary activity. If at one time the American stage was filled with American types of similar cartoon value, such was the accepted convention of the time; if there was more French attitude than American in the early society drama, it was because French technique was being imitated; if Bronson Howard has a right to the title of Dean of the American Drama, he must have stemmed a current that opposed him; if journalism dominates our stage to-day, there must be some reason for the reportorial treatment of most of our present native drama. I have tried to carry out this plan in the following pages: to emphasize the individual contributions to the idea of an American drama, to summarize the striking qualities of dramatists who are original in position, to enumerate the social and economic causes affecting the theatre, and through the theatre limiting the dramatist's work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary American Dramatists Introduction In any discussion of American dramatists it is important to consider what is meant by the term, American drama, and also to discuss briefly the early writers who helped to bring the American theatre to its present-day status. Bronson Howard, the dean of dramatists in America, defines American drama as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Plays by American Dramatists When I came to a consideration of the modern section, there were many omissions which had to be made, due very largely to the fact that authors and owners of copyright were loath to forego their rights. A collection of this kind should undoubtedly have the name of James A. Herne represented in its contents, inasmuch as none of Mr. Herne's plays have heretofore been published, and two of his most distinctive dramas in original manuscript, Mar garet Fleming and Griffith Davenport, have been totally de stroyed by fire. But representatives of Mr. Herne's family have declined, at the present time, to allow his plays to be published. This is to be regretted, inasmuch as nearly all of the most prom inent American playwrights are represented, either in the publi cation of isolated plays or in definitive editions. I should have liked to end this collection with the inclusion of Mr. Eugene Walter's The Easiest Way; at the present time, that play, which was' once issued in an edition privately printed, is to be found in the Drama League Series of plays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Drama Since 1918: An Informal History The purpose of this book is to offer both a connected account and some critical evaluation of playwriting in America since the World War. It is by no means a complete record of theatrical production. Such a record for most of the period covered may be found in Mr. Burns Mantle's annual volumes. It does not always mention all the plays written by even highly successful or important authors. In certain cases the plays seem to me to have little or no significance. On the other hand the intention is to provide what the subtitle promises - an informal history - rather than an essay on this or that aspect of the contem porary American drama. A great many plays are discussed and the attempt is made to provide a con tinuous account of the course of playvvriting in the United States during the two decades ending with the present. I cannot, of course, hope that anyone will be entirely satisfied with either my inclusions or my omissions. For the task which I have undertaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary American Playwrights The theatre of today IS a theatre m which a poetic drama of high quality IS being developed, a theatre m which even the conventional prose drama is being definitely influenced by the inspiration of poets newly attracted to the stage. The winning of one prize this season (1938) by a drama expressing the acute realism of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is balanced by the winning of another prize by the sensitive and spiritually inspired Our Town, written by the poet, Thornton Wilder. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative American Plays Before each play, a brief introduction explains its significance and gives a biographical sketch of the author, together with necessary information concem ing his plays. No pains have been spared to make these introductions accurate, and the editor has fortunately had at his disposal not only the usual histories of the theatre, but also manuscript sources such as the Bird and Boker Papers and the Diary of William Wood, the Manager of the Chestnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, as well as the printed sources that are included in the Clothier Collection of American Plays in the Library of the University of Pennsylvania. In the cases of the modern plays the information has been checked in nearly every case by the playwrights themselves. In each of the introductions a se lected bibliography has been given. It has seemed unnecessary to cumber these with long lists of magazine articles of a fugitive character but it is hoped that the references given will found helpful. A general bibliography of books relating to the American Drama has been placed at the end of the volume. In each introduction is given also the source of the text. Where it was possible to obtain acting versions of the older texts, the differences between these and the reading versions have been indicated. In general where emenda tions have been made, they have been included in square brackets. The spell ing has followed that of the original text, and the stage directions have been reprinted in the older plays as originally given. Several of the modern plays have been revised by the authors and their wishes have naturally been followed both as to text and stage directions. Some slight alterations have been made even here for the sake of uniformity, and where the preparation of the text has fallen on the editor alone, he has tried to present the stage directions in a read able form, according to modern standards of technique.
