Book excerpt: " Edward Parsons and Bayard Jones, the authors of The American Prayer Book: Its Origins and Principles, require no introduction. Both were liturgical scholars and lifetime churchmen in the Episcopal Church in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. The American Prayer Book was published on the heels of the release of the newly revised 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The strength of their book is found in their ability as skilled students of liturgy to identify the genesis of the various offices in the Book of Common Prayer, and to trace the development of each rite through the history of the Catholic Church. The erudite Parsons and Jones take the reader on a journey through time to show the aspiration of the one holy, catholic, and apostolic church's longing to "worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness" (Psalm 96:9, KJV).This present volume is not a reproduction of the original. The main content is contained herein, but the scholarly apparatus has been removed. Thus, footnotes, bibliography, and index are not included. Latin terms have also been reduced to a minimum, and when they are used, they are defined (along with other obscure liturgical concepts the modern reader may have to look up). 1928 Common Prayer is an abridged overview written as an introduction to the more scholarly effort. If the reader desires to investigate the work of Parsons and Jones for more detailed study, the original is available in the public domain on the internet. The goal was to make The American Prayer Book accessible to clergy and lay readers alike, which meant reducing wordiness, odd phrasing, and by clarifying concepts as best as possible. The overall aim was to reproduce an important work on English liturgy all "Anglican Americans" should consider, especially those who use the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What I have compiled in this extraordinary treasury are the very private thoughts of American philosophers, farmers, athletes, statesmen, mothers, laborers, scientists, industrialists, and others in their relationship with God. Some are simple, straightforward entreaties; others are elaborate invocations. All of them, however, provide indelible imprints and keys to understanding the inner sanctum of the individuals who made America what it is today. The prayers of these Americans are intimate snapshots of how they dealt with the gamut of human emotions, conditions, and events they experienced. They found comfort, hope, and the ability simply to endure by turning to God in their often unpredictable lives. While the language of these prayers may vary from era to era, the essence remains the same. Americans from all walks of life and faiths have found their existences incomplete without being able to reach out to a higher power. It is through the words of their prayers that they find purpose in a larger context and from a greater perspective. —James P. Moore Jr. Since its inception, America has remained a deeply religious and spiritual nation, fostering a prayer culture that has thrived among its diverse population and its wide-ranging faith traditions. The Treasury of American Prayers brings together hundreds of prayers composed largely by Americans from all walks of life to create an unparalleled and comprehensive collection of “home-grown” expressions of spirituality and religious conviction. These prayers form an inspiring portrait of the country’s rich and profound faith and provide access to the innermost thoughts of such individuals as Benjamin Franklin, Elvis Presley, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Conrad Hilton. They have helped sustain Americans in times of war and recession as well as in periods of change and even prosperity. Jim Moore has compiled an extraordinary anthology in The Treasury of American Prayers, arranged by such topics as patience, thanksgiving, despair, love, and other timeless themes. He provides context, historical perspective, and a personal insight for each prayer. While this collection reflects the great history of the American experience, these prayers also hold great resonance for Americans today.

Book excerpt: The American Book of Prayer is unlike any other prayer book available today. Designed for evangelical Christians of every denomination, the ABP is an easy-to-use guide that provides daily prayers written by some of America's most influential Christians of the past, such as Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, and George Whitefield. What makes ABP unique is that it presents readings from scripture, the psalms or proverbs, and confessional prayers for personal reflection in an organized and easy-to-use fashion (all in one book!). This allows the reader to spend less time flipping through pages and more time in prayer, all while avoiding the cumbersome task of carrying around a separate bible. The ABP is built for on-the-go use. You simply pick it up and start reading on "Day One" without worrying about what you should read next. Prayer cycles last 38 days and walk you through the story of creation and the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, as well as the entire story of the life of Jesus. Rather than design a study plan that requires the reader to re-read the Gospel story four separate times, the ABP walks you through Jesus' life in one continuous motion, providing passages from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in chronological order. The ABP also presents additional reading plans for Holy Week, Christmas, and offers an abundance of prayers for important moments in life - such as baptism, marriage, and even a job search. The ABP was meticulously crafted to be the only prayer book you need and a lasting presence in your family's home.
