Book Synopsis Race, Religion, and the Pulpit by : Julia Marie Robinson
Download or read book Race, Religion, and the Pulpit written by Julia Marie Robinson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the cities of the Northeast, Midwest, and West, the local black church was essential in the making and reshaping of urban areas. In Detroit, there was one church and one minister in particular that demonstrated this power of the pulpit—Second Baptist Church of Detroit (“Second,” as many members called it) and its nineteenth pastor, the Reverend Robert L. Bradby. In Race, Religion, and the Pulpit: Rev. Robert L. Bradby and the Making of Urban Detroit, author Julia Marie Robinson explores how Bradby’s church became the catalyst for economic empowerment, community building, and the formation of an urban African American working class in Detroit. Robinson begins by examining Reverend Bradby’s formative years in Ontario, Canada; his rise to prominence as a pastor and community leader at Second Baptist in Detroit; and the sociohistorical context of his work in the early years of the Great Migration. She goes on to investigate the sometimes surprising nature of relationships between Second Baptist, its members, and prominent white elites in Detroit, including Bradby’s close relationship to Ford Motor Company and Henry Ford. Finally, Robinson details Bradby’s efforts as a “race leader” and activist, roles that were tied directly to his theology. She looks at the parts the minister played in such high-profile events as the organizing of Detroit’s NAACP chapter, the Ossian Sweet trial of the mid-1920s, the Scottsboro Boys trials in the 1930s, and the controversial rise of the United Auto Workers in Detroit in the 1940s. Race, Religion, and the Pulpit presents a full and nuanced picture of Bradby’s life that has so far been missing from the scholarly record. Readers interested in the intersections of race and religion in American history, as well as anyone with ties to Detroit’s Second Baptist Church, will appreciate this thorough volume.

Download or read book The Southern Baptist Pulpit (Classic Reprint) written by J. F. Love and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Baptist Pulpit As it is the province of the butler to serve the viands and not entertain the guests, we will not intrude on the deader a long dissertation on even so fine a dish as we are, by the graciousness of the brethren, able to provide. The intellectual and spiritual repast to which all are invited will proclaim its own excellence. The Southern Baptist Convention constitutes the largest deliberative body in the world, and though a few excellent volumes of sermons by single individuals have been published, no book representing the pulpit of the Convention has yet appeared. It was thought that such a volume would be a fitting memorial to our fiftieth anniversary as a separate organization. The book is truly representative though by no means exhaustive of the pulpit talent among us; and we believe its household value will be greatly increased by the portraits and biographical sketches of the contributors. All will welcome among the preachers, the face and sketch of the preachers friend. Judge Haralson, the president of the Convention. I wish here to record my profound thanks to my brethren, who, while averse to publicity, have, in the interests of the enterprise and through personal kindness, furnished the material for the book and made my cherished plan possible. Download or read book The Rhode Island Freewill Baptist Pulpit (Classic Reprint) written by Alvin Dighton Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhode Island Freewill Baptist Pulpit And hence the present volume. None can be more fully or more sensitively aware that it has many defects than the writer. But elaboration and literary finish have not been attempted. Many of those-especially of our older ministers - whose biographies have been sketched, were plain and technically speaking unlettered men; and no effort has been made to make them appear to be, in this or in any other respect, what they were not. To embellish-their memories with the owers and graces of rhetoric, would only be to present them at a dis advantage - like a giant western pioneer trammeled with the finery of fashion. What they were would not be appreciated, and what they were not could not thus be attached to them if we would. As nearly as possible, therefore, they have been presented in the same light and garb in which they appeared to their unprejudiced contemporaries - just as they actually were. For in no other way would they be likely to be appreciated. The best of blacksmiths would be regarded as a most miserable ar tisan, if by any means he should be mistaken for a jeweller. Book Synopsis Into the Pulpit by : Elizabeth H. Flowers
Download or read book Into the Pulpit written by Elizabeth H. Flowers and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over women's roles in the Southern Baptist Convention's conservative ascendance is often seen as secondary to theological and biblical concerns. Elizabeth Flowers argues, however, that for both moderate and conservative Baptist women--all of whom had much at stake--disagreements that touched on their familial roles and ecclesial authority have always been primary. And, in the turbulent postwar era, debate over their roles caused fierce internal controversy. While the legacy of race and civil rights lingered well into the 1990s, views on women's submission to male authority provided the most salient test by which moderates were identified and expelled in a process that led to significant splits in the Church. In Flowers's expansive history of Southern Baptist women, the "woman question" is integral to almost every area of Southern Baptist concern: hermeneutics, ecclesial polity, missionary work, church-state relations, and denominational history. Flowers's analysis, part of the expanding survey of America's religious and cultural landscape after World War II, points to the South's changing identity and connects religious and regional issues to the complicated relationship between race and gender during and after the civil rights movement. She also shows how feminism and shifting women's roles, behaviors, and practices played a significant part in debates that simmer among Baptists and evangelicals throughout the nation today.

Book Synopsis Annals of the Presbyterian Pulpit by : William B. Sprague
Download or read book Annals of the Presbyterian Pulpit written by William B. Sprague and published by . This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes trace the Presbyterian Pulpit from the earliest days of the country until the early 1860's. This three volume hardcover set is very difficult to find and you can purchase all three volumes for less than you could purchase one volume from antiquarian booksellers. "Sprague's 'Annals of the American Pulpit' was one of the most useful reference works of the nineteenth century. By recording, often from personal acquaintances, key information about a wide range of clergymen in early American history, Sprague made it possible to peer much further into the day-by-day lives of the churches. This reprinting of the volumes dealing with Presbyterian ministers should be welcome to all students of early American history, but especially by those who desire a sense of how religious life 'on the ground' was carried out." Mark A. Noll, Professor of History, Wheaton College (IL)

Book excerpt: Sherwood Pictures is the filmmaking ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, and the leading producer of church-based, independent Christian films. This book situates their work in the history of religion and film in America and shows how they bring to fruition early 20th century Protestant expectations for the use of film in the life of the church and their hopes for a vibrant Christian film industry. Also covered are the handful of churches, inspired by Sherwood, that have taken up their own cameras to create a growing church film movement. This book offers another examination of the relationship between conservative evangelical Protestant Christianity and the wider popular culture.
