Book excerpt: From a real-life ambassador's wife and the acclaimed author of Exile Music comes a harrowing novel about the kidnapping of an American woman in the Middle East and the heartbreaking choices she and her husband each must make in the hope of being reunited. When bohemian artist Miranda meets British ambassador Finn in the ancient stone streets of an Islamic city, the course of her life alters in extraordinary ways. Their marriage gives her the luxury to paint whenever she wants, a staff to wait on her, and a young daughter she adores, but she loses the freedom to wander where she likes and to meet the Muslim women she is secretly teaching to paint. Her husband also makes Miranda a target: One sunny afternoon while hiking in the mountains, she is brutally kidnapped. As Finn struggles to save his family and his career, and Miranda grows close to a stranger’s child in captivity, the secrets he and Miranda have each sought to hide place them and those who trust them in peril. Not even freedom could restore the happiness that once was theirs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a whirlwind romance, she still has much to learn about her new ambassador husband—and about the fate of his predecessor’s wife . . . At thirty-five, Nora Buckbee fears she’s destined for a lonely, single life. Then she meets handsome State Department employee John Fielding. They marry quickly—and next thing she knows she’s moving to Thailand with him, where he’ll be serving as ambassador. It’s an exciting adventure—for a while. Then she learns that the last ambassador’s wife disappeared without a trace, and there seems to be little interest in learning what happened. John, who’s often away on secret missions—odd, she thinks, for an emissary—seems as unfazed by the mystery as everyone else. But when Nora starts volunteering for the same group with whom the last wife worked, she begins to realize that nothing here is as it appears to be . . . including her new husband. Determined to peel away the layers of lies and secrets that surround her, Nora finds herself in a race to discover the truth. But can she figure it out before she meets the same fate as the previous wife? Acclaim for Roberta Gately’s The Bracelet “Hard to put down until the very last page.” —Jennifer Haupt, author of I’ll Stand by You and In the Shadow of 10,000 Hills

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind enemy lines, danger lurks around every corner. The world teeters on the edge of World War III. Tensions are the highest between the US and Russia since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ambassadors on both sides have been recalled—but the US Ambassador has gone missing. Cooper Braaten is tasked with rescuing both the ambassador and his wife and returning them to America. However, if he’s captured, the US government will deny his very existence, and a hostile Russian government isn’t the only threat he faces: the bratva, a brotherhood of Russian mafia families, has set their sights on the ambassador and will stop at nothing to capture him. To make matters worse, Jayne Renolds, now the head of a multinational consortium, wants the ambassador, too—but not for politics or personal gain. Jayne wants revenge. Cooper isn’t alone, though. Danika Helström, the top-tier ex-Council assassin, and a legendary rebel known as the Chechen, join forces with Cooper in an effort to bring down the forces that decimated so many innocents around the world. Extraction is a high-tech, cloak-and-dagger military thriller that reads full-throttle from page one. Sequel to The Regent, Extraction is the 6th book in Marcus Richardson’s near-future post-apocalyptic series, The Wildfire Saga.

Download or read book Swimming Through the Flotsam in Which We Live and Move and Have Our Being written by George Stade and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plague was erupted. The victim suffers a two-month latent period during which he is infectious but shows no symptoms. The virus is spread by aerosol, so that millions of people are soon infected and infectious, but without knowing it. At the "climax" of he disease, there is what a character calls "a rite of distribution." At the climax the victim does what he or she most wanted or feared doing, the idea being that this kind of fear is laced with fascination. As America (like the rest of the world) sinks into chaos, as the Red Deaths kills forty percent of the population, two fiercely antagonistic groups emerge. There's the apocalyptic religious group called Swimmers, because their charismatic leader was first seen swimming out of the Hudson River. The other group jokingly calls itself Our Gang, a very mixed group that has become immune to the plague as a by-product of an experimental treatment of herpes. What they see and do as they hike north from New York City to a farm upstate forms the substance of the novel.
