Book Synopsis Reflections on Faith and 17Th Century European-American Colonists by : Carlos R. Hamilton Jr.
Download or read book Reflections on Faith and 17Th Century European-American Colonists written by Carlos R. Hamilton Jr. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American colonial history is told through the stories of four young people who left Europe and its Age of Enlightenment to start new lives in an uncertain new world in this scholarly work. Carlos R. Hamilton Jr. aims to determine what experiences they and thousands of other immigrants had and the role those experiences played in influencing the future United States of America, including its government and culture. One of the primary reasons these immigrants settled in a new place thousands of miles from home was the prospect of being able to enjoy religious freedom. Other drivers included a desire to enjoy more economic opportunity and achieve security for one’s self and their family. While this study is limited to Anglo-European immigration, the historical background of homelands of African, Latino, and Asian immigrants are as important in understanding the circumstances of their many contributions to the subsequent culture of the United States of America. The author suggests that the same reasons people immigrated to what would become the United States hundreds of years ago remain primary reasons increasing numbers of immigrants are seeking residence in America today.
Book Synopsis Chasing Immortality in World Religions by : Deborah M. Coulter-Harris
Download or read book Chasing Immortality in World Religions written by Deborah M. Coulter-Harris and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have been chasing immortality since the beginning of history, seeking answers to sickness and aging, death and the afterlife, and questioning the human condition. Analyzing ideas from ancient Sumer, Egypt, Greece and India, as well as the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, this study explores how early religious models influenced later beliefs about immortality, the afterlife, the human soul, resurrection, and reward and punishment. The author highlights shared teachings among the most influential religions and philosophies, concluding that humankind has not substantially changed its conceptions of immortality in 6,000 years. This continuity of belief may be due to chromosomal memory and cultural inheritance, or may represent a fundamental way of conceptualizing the afterlife to cope with mortality. Book Synopsis Magdalene Mysteries by : Seren Bertrand
Download or read book Magdalene Mysteries written by Seren Bertrand and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the Womb Rites and initiatory magic of Mary Magdalene, who was revered as a Priestess and human embodiment of the Goddess • 2020 Nautilus Gold Award • Reveals how Mary Magdalene was a sacred priestess of the ancient Womb Mysteries, connected to moon wisdom, sacred harlot archetypes, and goddesses in many traditions, including Sophia, Isis, Inanna, Asherah, Lilith, Jezebel, and Witches • Explains how the Magdalene Mysteries have been encoded in Gnostic texts, sacred art, and literature and unveils the secret Grail heresy of the Ghent Altarpiece • Offers rituals and practices to initiate you into the Womb magic of the ancient priestesses and access deeper dimensions of sexuality and feminine power A sacred priestess of the ancient Womb Rites, Mary Magdalene was at the center of a great and enduring Mystery tradition, one that touched on a stream of perennial spiritual wisdom as old as humanity. Worshipped as the human embodiment of the Goddess, the earthly Sophia, her womb was the spiritual luminatrix that anointed and empowered Jesus, transforming him into the Christ. As a priestess of the Goddess, Mary Magdalene knew how to embody the light and the dark, how to harness the magic potency of sacred sexual energy, and how to cleanse, awaken, and resurrect the soul. Yet, even though she sparked the creation of a worldwide religion, her story and teachings have been forgotten. Unveiling the lost left-hand path of the Magdalene, the Feminine Christ, authors Seren and Azra Bertrand explore how this underground stream of knowledge has been carried forward over the millennia through an unbroken lineage of Womb Shamans, Priestesses, Oracles, and Medicine Women. They explain how the Magdalene Mysteries, symbolized by the Rose, have been encoded in Gnostic codices and gospels and in the highest art, literature, and architecture of many ages, including most significantly the Ghent Altarpiece. They examine Mary Magdalene’s connection to moon wisdom, sacred harlot archetypes, and goddesses in many traditions, including Isis, Inanna, Asherah, Lilith, and Jezebel, and look at shamanic, tantric, and Cathar expressions of sacred feminine mysteries as well as the Witch and Templar roots of Robin Hood and Maid Marian. In this revelatory and magical text on the lost feminine mystery traditions of Mary Magdalene and the lineage of Sophia, the authors present encompassing theological, historical, mythological, and archetypal wisdom, with rituals and practices to initiate you into the Womb magic of the ancient priestesses and the path of the wild feminine.

Book Synopsis The Talmud - A Personal Take by : Daniel Boyarin
Download or read book The Talmud - A Personal Take written by Daniel Boyarin and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Daniel Boyarin's previously uncollected essays on the Talmud represents the different methods and lines of inquiry that have animated his work on that text over the last four decades. Ranging and changing from linguistic work to work on sex and gender to the relations between formative Judaism and Christianity to the literary genres of the Talmud in the Hellenistic context, he gives an account of multiple questions and provocations to which that prodigious book gives stimulation, showing how the Talmud can contribute to all of these fields. The book opens up possibilities for study of the Talmud using historical, classical, philological, anthropological, cultural studies, gender, and literary theory and criticism. As a kind of intellectual autobiography, it is a record of the alarums and excursions of a life in the Talmud.
Download or read book Exemplary Women of Early China written by and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early China, was it correct for a woman to disobey her father, contradict her husband, or shape the public policy of a son who ruled over a dynasty or state? According to the Lienü zhuan, or Categorized Biographies of Women, it was not only appropriate but necessary for women to step in with wise counsel when fathers, husbands, or rulers strayed from the path of virtue. Compiled toward the end of the Former Han dynasty (202 BCE-9 CE) by Liu Xiang (79-8 BCE), the Lienü zhuan is the earliest extant book in the Chinese tradition solely devoted to the education of women. Far from providing a unified vision of women's roles, the text promotes a diverse and sometimes contradictory range of practices. At one extreme are exemplars resorting to suicide and self-mutilation as a means to preserve chastity and ritual orthodoxy. At the other are bold and outspoken women whose rhetorical mastery helps correct erring rulers, sons, and husbands. The text provides a fascinating overview of the representation of women's roles in early legends, formal speeches on statecraft, and highly fictionalized historical accounts during this foundational period of Chinese history. Over time, the biographies of women became a regular feature of dynastic and local histories and a vehicle for expressing and transmitting concerns about women's social, political, and domestic roles. The Lienü zhuan is also rich in information about the daily life, rituals, and domestic concerns of early China. Inspired by its accounts, artists across the millennia have depicted its stories on screens, paintings, lacquer ware, murals, and stone relief sculpture, extending its reach to literate and illiterate audiences alike.
