Book excerpt: It's the skull-fucking you didn't know you needed. -Liberty Hardy, Book Riot THE CULT CLASSIC RETURNS WITH A NEW DEFINITIVE EDITION Robert Kloss's The Alligators of Abraham is a fever dream built from the fly strewn corpses of armies, the megalomania of generals, the madness of widows, the fires of mourning, the fury of the poor, the indifference of the wealthy, and the ravenous hissing of those alligators who have ever plagued the shores of our national nightmares. The Alligators of Abraham is a Civil War epic unlike any other. A novel as lyrical as it is precise in its depiction of the struggle to maintain dignity. -Adam Braver, author November 22, 1963 Robert Kloss's words gnaw into the collective dark underbelly unconsciousness of the 19th century which, in many ways, we've never entirely gotten over in America. -Rebecca Brown, author of American Romances

These classic tall tales are featured here in all of their creepy glory along with hundreds of others, and they're guaranteed to amuse, enlighten, and intrigue, but be careful: they may stick in your mind forever.

Book excerpt: A humorous tale about acceptance, social justice and keeping an open mind. Though he’s scared at first, a boy who encounters an alligator in the woods discovers all the creature wants is companionship — and leftovers! — and the two become friends. But the mayor of the boy’s town won’t have it. He makes a proclamation, “NO ALLIGATORS! Blah, blah, blah.” Which the townspeople agree with, at first. Then they realize how friendly the alligator is (and how nice it is to have someone eat their leftovers!), and they want him to stay. Can they all come together and find a way to keep the alligator in their town? See you later, alligator? Not if these townspeople can help it!

Snappsy the alligator wants nothing more than a quiet evening to himself, but a pesky chicken who insists he's Snappsy's best friend won't leave him alone. Friendship bracelets? Matching shirts? The sleepover of the century? Snappsy did not ask for any of the activities the chicken—his best friend forever?—is planning. This pitch-perfect sequel to Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book) explores all the ways we get friendship wrong (and why it feels so magical when we get it right!).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clever, funny, and informative look at the pets--from Calvin Coolidge's wallaby to Teddy Roosevelt's flying squirrels--that have passed through the White House gates. Perfect for fans of I Am George Washington and So You Want to Be President? President Truman famously said, "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." And a dog is what many presidents got. From James Garfield to Calvin Coolidge to Richard Nixon, presidents often found a friend in Fido (in fact, Abe Lincoln's pup was actually named Fido). Others preferred cats, horses, small critters, or even big, ferocious animals like bears and alligators. With a catchy refrain ("If you want a friend in Washington . . . , "), this is a funny, educational book about the animals that have passed through the White House. Whether it's favorite dogs like Barbara Bush's Millie or the Obamas' Bo; Abraham Lincoln's cat, Dixie; Calvin Coolidge's hippo, Billy; or Andrew Jackson's foul-mouthed parrot, Poll, Erin McGill brings to life a menagerie of presidential pets in this entertaining, whimsical, and carefully researched picture book that's perfect for animal lovers and history buffs alike.

Book excerpt: “Fascinating . . . a lively and perceptive cultural history.” —Annette Gordon-Reed, The New Yorker In this wide-ranging, brilliantly researched work, David S. Reynolds traces the factors that made Uncle Tom’s Cabin the most influential novel ever written by an American. Upon its 1852 publication, the novel’s vivid depiction of slavery polarized its American readership, ultimately widening the rift that led to the Civil War. Reynolds also charts the novel’s afterlife—including its adaptation into plays, films, and consumer goods—revealing its lasting impact on American entertainment, advertising, and race relations.

This is a reissue of Mark Alan Stamaty’s masterpiece of the absurd, first published 30 years ago and out of print nearly as long. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Yvonne Wilson, an accountant, and Oliver, a grossly overweight black-and-white tuxedo cat. Yvonne witnesses an execution-style murder of three people. Even with limited police protection and the promise of being put in the witness protection program, Yvonne fully realizes that MS-13 gang members or the mob are going to kill her. The mob has hired MS-13 gang members to expedite the matter. After believing that she is in a hopeless dilemma, Yvonne notices a huge black-and-white tuxedo cat that has just appeared in her living room. He is a talking cat named Oliver. Oliver explains that he was sent from heaven to protect Yvonne from the MS-13 gang members and the mob. He assures her that the mob/MS-13 cannot harm her. He will protect her until she dies a natural death. Yvonne soon realizes that Oliver can back up what he says. He has supernatural powers. He is omniscient (all-knowing), omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (can be in more than one place at the same time), and clairvoyant (can see into the future). Oliver is here for the duration. He will never leave her. After a while, Yvonne and Oliver grow on each other. They become inseparable. The story is full of love, and there is a human and feline bonding. Yvonne often shoots it out with MS-13 gang members and mobsters. Although close to a deity, Oliver does have some faults. He is always on a thin line between being a law officer and an outlaw. After he becomes an FBI agent, he takes some of his salary and donates the rest to charity. When he is short of cash, he prints $100 bills in Yvonne's basement. Since the bills are real, he can't be accused of counterfeiting.
