Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Outlook for 1930 Taxes on farm property in the United States as a whole may be expected to increase for some time, although it appears certain that the rate of increase will be less than the average rate since 1913. Estimated average taxes per acre of farm real estate increased 134 per cent from 1913 to 1924, principally because of increased expenditures for schools and roads. By 1928 taxes per acre had advanced to 146 per cent above the 1913 level. It is most unlikely that there will be a sufficient abatement in the demand for public improvements and services to permit a general reduction in State and local expenditures. Taxes on farm property will not decline and probably will continue to increase unless the several States should (1) provide more effective control over the tendency of expenditures to increase and (2) revise further their systems of taxation so that a substantially greater share of the necessary expenditures would be met by revenues derived from sources other than general property. Past experience indicates that progress along these lines will be slow unless there should develop an unusually strong demand for practical and far-reach ing improvements in State and local finance. Rapid changes in farm production practices during the last decade have introduced new features into the agricultural situation. There seems little doubt but that the rapid development and adoption of improved farm machinery, particularly the all-purpose tractor and the variety of new cultivating and harvesting equipment associated therewith. Will continue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 1: Supplement No. 1, January, 1924 The oldest of the three publications which were combined to form Weather, Crops and Markets was the National Weather and Crop Bulletin. The various changes in the title of this publi cation from the time it was first published by the Weather Bureau in 1891, through 1909, are given in detail in the Check List of U. S. Public Documents 1789 - 190 3d edition. The last title given in the Check list is the National Weather Bulletin. This was continued through 1914, No. 15. The first issue under the new title National Weather a'nd Crop Bulletin was the number for July 6, 1914. In 1919, with No. 37, the Snow and Ice Bulletin was combined with it and during the winter months the title read National Weather and Crop and Snow and Ice Bulletin. In January, 1922, the Snow and Ice Bulletin resumed publication as a separate bulletin and the National feather and Crop Bulletin was combined with the Market Reporter and the Monthly Crop Reporter to form Weather, Crops and Markets. The Cro -reporter began publication in May, 1899, as vol. 1, No. 1. T was published primarily for the crop correspond ents of the Department of Agriculture. For the year 1906 (vol. 7) only eight numbers were issued, together with a supplement. The last number appearing under the title of The Crop Re porter was vol. 15, No. 6, dated June, 1913. No crop reports were issued for July and August, 1913. Publication of crop reports was resumed in the form of the Agricultural Outlook. Bulletins bearing this title appeared once each month in the regular Farmers' Bulletin series. As the Farmers' Bulletins were numberedconsecutively, the num bers of the Agricultural Outlook necessarily were not num bered consecutively. The first Agricultural Outlook appeared as Farmers' Bulletin 558, was dated September 11, 1913, and covered September 1 crop reports. Farmers' Bulletins bear ing the following numbers comprise the complete series of the Agricultural Outlook: 563, 570, 575, 581, 584, 590, 598, 604, 611, 615, 620, 629, 641, 645, 651, 665, 672. The last number of the Agricultural Outlook appearing in the Farmers' Bulletin series was dated April 23, 1915. All of these numbers of the Agricultural Outlook were indexed together in a separate publication issued in 1915. The numbers of the Agricultural Outlook and the index together total twenty issues. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Outlook for 1935 This report presents, therefore, a summary of the outlook based upon more complete information than has heretofore been available for use in appraising the probable trends of agriculture. This report for 1935 will be the only report issued by this Bureau until the summer of 1935, when the usual summer outlook reports will appear, if there is no change in the outlook program. This report represents the national view point primarily. Most of the State agricultural colleges and extension services will prepare reports, applying particularly to conditions in their respective States, for the use of their extension workers. Any farmer who receives a copy of this, the Federal report, is urged to secure a copy of any reports that may be distributed by his State extension service for consideration in connection with his individual problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1930 Agricultural Outlook for California According to the Federal Outlook Report the apple industry of the United States has made a considerable recovery from the disturbed conditions which accompanied the rapid and excessive expansion of commercial plantings in the Northwest and other sections about 20 years ago. The drastic adjustments which followed this period of over-planting have gradually placed the industry on a sounder economic basis. There are still sufficient young trees in commercial orchards, however, to maintain production at a high level for a period of years, and in seasons when weather and other growing conditions are especially favorable production will be so heavy as to be burden some. In 33 of the states which produce over 90 per cent of the United States apple crop, 25 to 30 per cent of the trees in commercial orchards were less than 9 years old at the beginning of 1928, and 65 to 70 per cent were less than 19 years old. In View of this proportion of young trees in commercial orchards together with the general tendencies toward an increased bearing life and an increased productive capacity per tree, owing to improved orchard manage ment and to the larger proportion of orchards on better locations. It seems reasonable to expect a further increase in commercial produc tion for several years. This prospective increase in commercial pro duction, however, will be partially offset by the declining production in family orchards, which contain nearly one-third of the apple trees in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Outlook for 1925 Growers of spring wheat, especially those who may expect to benefit from the tariff, should be cautious about increasing their acreage over last year. The production of flax, on the other hand, is still somewhat under domestic consumption and flax prices for the 1925 crop will probably be relatively higher than wheat. Some slight shift from wheat to flax, therefore, may be profitable. A marked shortage of hogs during the coming year appears probable and hog prices should advance to much higher levels. Increased breeding for fall farrowing, therefore, should be profitable. The feeding demand for 1925 feed crops evidently will be smaller than during the present crop year. Corn and oat acreages, therefore, should not be increased especially by farmers who sell their crop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1929 Agricultural Outlook for California This report presents a summary of the present available facts bearing upon the future economic conditions of important farm products in California. If farmers are to avoid losses which result from extreme expansion or contraction, these facts should be given careful consideration when increasing or decreasing acreage of crops or numbers of livestock. The statements herein necessarily represent the state point of View, and, in many instances, must be modified to meet local and individual conditions. No attempt is made to advise individual farmers as to What they should or should not do. This circular attempts to give the available facts and to analyze their probable bearing on future prices. From these, farmers may more intelligently adjust their production to market demands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Outlook for 1936 During the 1934 - 35 fertilizer season the fertilizer industry operated under a code of the National Recovery Administration. The effect of the code was to raise and maintain prices. These codes were terminated in May 1935. The 1934 - 35 fertilizer tonnage was 10 percent larger than in the preceding Season in the 12 Southern States as shown by fertilizer-tag sales and 26 percent larger in 5 Midwestern States. Combined sales in the two areas were 11 per cent larger than in the preceding season and the highest since the 1930 - 31 season. With but little change in income from the 1935 crops of cotton and to bacco than that secured a year earlier, no marked increase in fertilizer use is expected during the coming year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1936 Agricultural Outlook for California: Contribution From the Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics The purpose of this report is to make available to the farmers of the state information that will afford them a better understanding of the conditions in the markets where their products are sold and of the forces which influence prices. In formulating farming plans and programs and in deciding on adjustments that may be desirable on any farm or in any area, producers - individually and collectively - should take into account not only the conditions on their own farms, but also market conditions and price prospects. Further, the welfare both of individual farmers and of whole groups in particular areas will be affected by the plans which producers in competing areas are making. Planning with a fuller knowledge of all these influences will help farmers to hold the gains of recent years and will be necessary if the agricultural production of the different areas in the state in the year ahead is to be kept in bal ance with production in other areas and states, and in line with the best interests of the nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World Cotton Situation With Outlook for 1931-32 and the Long-Time Outlook for Southern Agriculture The United States is the outstanding consumer of American cot ton. Nearly three and one-half times as much of the American crop is consumed in this country as in Great Britain, the second largest consumer of American cotton. Of the total cotton crop produced in this country, around 40 to 45 per cent is consumed here and 55 to 60 per cent is exported. (fig. The general trend in cotton consumption in the United States is upward, although depression years temporarily reduce consumption. From 1900 to 1916 there was an increase of over 70 per cent. The depression Of 1920 - 21 carried consumption to the lowest levels for 10 years, but thereafter the upward trend was resumed except for the reductions accompanying the business depressions Of 1924, 1927, and 1930. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 32: January 13, 1936 In 1934, Oriental markets (japan, China. And the Philippines) accounted for 16 percent of the total value of our agricultural exports compared with a yearly average of percent during the period l924 to 1928. This relative increase in agricultural exports to the Orient may be contracted with the decrease in exports to Europe from.43.3 percent for the 5 - year average, 1924 - 1928, to percent in 1934. Another indica tion of the relative shift of our agricultural exports to the Orient is indicated by the fact that in 1934, 'in terms of value, Europe took percent and the Orient percent of their average annual takings during the period 1924 - 1928. While some improvement in our agricultural exports to Europe from the low levels reached during the depression may be expected, it seems clear that the production of competitive products in European countries will be maintained at a level higher than prevailed during the twenties and that competition from surplus producing countries for the European market will continue to increase. In considering the outlook for our agri cultural exports in the next few years, it is, therefore, of importance to appraise the tendencies which are at work with respect to our trade with Oriental countries. The present statement deals with the tendencies of our agricultural trade with China. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
