Book Synopsis View Synthesis Using Stereo Vision by : Daniel Scharstein
Download or read book View Synthesis Using Stereo Vision written by Daniel Scharstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image-based rendering, as an area of overlap between computer graphics and computer vision, uses computer vision techniques to aid in sythesizing new views of scenes. Image-based rendering methods are having a substantial impact on the field of computer graphics, and also play an important role in the related field of multimedia systems, for applications such as teleconferencing, remote instruction and surgery, virtual reality and entertainment. The book develops a novel way of formalizing the view synthesis problem under the full perspective model, yielding a clean, linear warping equation. It shows new techniques for dealing with visibility issues such as partial occlusion and "holes". Furthermore, the author thoroughly re-evaluates the requirements that view synthesis places on stereo algorithms and introduces two novel stereo algorithms specifically tailored to the application of view synthesis.

Book Synopsis The Path to Path-Traced Movies by : Per H. Christensen
Download or read book The Path to Path-Traced Movies written by Per H. Christensen and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Path tracing is one of several techniques to render photorealistic images by simulating the physics of light propagation within a scene. The roots of path tracing are outside of computer graphics, in the Monte Carlo simulations developed for neutron transport. A great strength of path tracing is that it is conceptually, mathematically, and often-times algorithmically simple and elegant, yet it is very general. Until recently, however, brute-force path tracing techniques were simply too noisy and slow to be practical for movie production rendering. They therefore received little usage outside of academia, except perhaps to generate an occasional reference image to validate the correctness of other (faster but less general) rendering algorithms. The last ten years have seen a dramatic shift in this balance, and path tracing techniques are now widely used. This shift was partially fueled by steadily increasing computational power and memory, but also by significant improvements in sampling, rendering, and denoising techniques. The Path to Path-Traced Movies provides the reader with an overview of path tracing and highlights important milestones in its development that have led to it becoming the preferred movie rendering technique today. It identifies major hurdles that stood in the way of that transition, describing the technical milestones that pushed the field forward over the last couple of decades, and discusses the combination of circumstances that came together to propel the CG and VFX movie industry into a path-traced world. Since the journey is not yet complete, it also discusses on-going challenges and open questions that practitioners and researchers will need to address in the years to come.
Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing by : Ruslan Mitkov
Download or read book Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing written by Ruslan Mitkov and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on contributions from the First International Conference on Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing (RANLP'95) held in Tzigov Chark, Bulgaria, 14-16 September 1995. This conference was one of the most important and competitively reviewed conferences in Natural Language Processing (NLP) for 1995 with submissions from more than 30 countries. Of the 48 papers presented at RANLP'95, the best (revised) papers have been selected for this book, in the hope that they reflect the most significant and promising trends (and latest successful results) in NLP. The book is organised thematically and the contributions are grouped according to the traditional topics found in NLP: morphology, syntax, grammars, parsing, semantics, discourse, grammars, generation, machine translation, corpus processing and multimedia. To help the reader find his/her way, the authors have prepared an extensive index which contains major terms used in NLP; an index of authors which lists the names of the authors and the page numbers of their paper(s); a list of figures; and a list of tables. This book will be of interest to researchers, lecturers and graduate students interested in Natural Language Processing and more specifically to those who work in Computational Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics and Machine Translation.

Book Synopsis Adapting to Climate Change in Urban Areas by : David Satterthwaite
Download or read book Adapting to Climate Change in Urban Areas written by David Satterthwaite and published by IIED. This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the possibilities and constraints for adaptation to climate change in urban areas in low- and middle-income nations. These contain a third of the world's population and a large proportion of the people and economic activities most at risk from sea-level rise and from the heatwaves, storms and floods whose frequency and/or intensity climate change is likely to increase. Section I outlines both the potentials for adaptation and the constraints. Section II discusses the scale of urban change. Section III considers direct and indirect impacts of climate change on urban areas and which nations, cities and population groups are particularly at risk. This highlights how prosperous, well-governed cities could generally adapt, but most of the world's urban population lives in cities or smaller urban centres ill-equipped for adaptation. A key part of adaptation concerns infrastructure and buildings - but much of the urban population in Africa, Asia and Latin America lack the infrastructure to adapt. Most international agencies have long refused to support urban programmes, especially those that address these problems. Section IV discusses innovations by urban governments and community organizations and in financial systems that address such problems, including the relevance of recent innovations in disaster-risk reduction for adaptation. It notes how few city and national governments are taking any action on adaptation. Section V discusses how local innovation in adaptation can be encouraged and supported at national scale, and the funding needed to support this. Section VI considers the mechanisms for financing this and the larger ethical challenges that achieving adaptation raises - especially the fact that most climate-change-related urban (and rural) risks are in low-income nations with the least adaptive capacity, including many that have contributed very little to greenhouse-gas emissions.
