This book was released on 1965 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to investigate experimentally the change in airfoil characteristics brought about by the simultaneous application of boundary layer control through leading edge blowing and circulation control through trailing edge suction, to detect the changes in lift resulting from leading edge blowing, to determine if any benefit could be derived by simultaneously applying trailing edge suction at a mass flow rate equal to that of the blowing, and to investigate the associated changes in pressure drag and pitching moment.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A circulation control elliptic airfoil section with a 15-percent thickness-to-chord ratio which incorporates a spiral trailing edge was evaluated subsonically to determine its aerodynamic characteristics. The spiral-shaped Coanda surface was previously evaluated with a different leading edge. The airfoil, designated NCCR 1505-7567S, has an uncambered forward half and a cambered aft portion resulting in a 0.005-percent camber for the profile. This particular combination of camber was selected because it was analytically predicted to have good critical Mach number characteristics in the range of interest. The range of momentum coefficient was limited due to the relatively early onset of Coanda jet-tunnel floor interference; however, lift coefficients in the excess of 4.25 were produced at momentum coefficients of 0.16. Equivalent lift-to-drag ratios in excess of 40 were also produced when lift coefficient reached approximately 1.0."--Report documentation page.

This book was released on 1931 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes tests to determine the possibility of controlling the boundary layer on the upper surface of an airfoil by use of the low pressure existing near the leading edge. The low pressure was used to induce flow through slots in the upper surface of the wing. The tests showed that the angle of attack for maximum lift was increased at the expense of a reduction in the maximum lift coefficient and an increase in the drag coefficient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From consideration of available information on boundary-layer behaviour, a relation among profile thickness, maximum surface velocity, Reynolds number, velocity diagram, and solidity is established for a cascade of airfoils immersed in a two-dimensional incompressible fluid flow. Several cascades are computed to show the effect of various cascade design parameters on minimum required cascade solidity.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted to assess the application of a moving surface to affect boundary layers and circulation around airfoils for the purpose of altering and enhancing aerodynamic performance of finite wings at moderate Reynolds numbers. The moving surface was established by a wide, lightweight, nylon belt that enveloped a wing's symmetric airfoil profile articulated via a friction drive cylinder such that the direction of the upper surface was in the direction of the free stream. A water tunnel visualization study accompanied wind tunnel testing at the University of Washington, Kirsten Wind Tunnel of finite wings. An experimental study was conducted to assess the application of a moving surface to affect boundary layers and circulation around airfoils for the purpose of altering and enhancing aerodynamic performance of finite wings at moderate Reynolds numbers. The defining non-dimensional parameter for the system is the ratio of the surface velocity to the free stream velocity, u/U. Results show a general increase in lift with increasing u/U. The endurance parameter served as an additional metric for the system's performance. Examining the results of the endurance parameter shows general increase in endurance and lift with the moving surface activated. Peak performance in terms of increased endurance along with increased lift occurs at or slightly above u/U = 1. Water tunnel visualization showed a marked difference in the downwash for velocity ratios greater than 1, supporting the measured data. Reynolds numbers for this investigation were 1.9E5 and 4.3E5, relevant to the class of fixed wing, Tier-1, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).

Book Synopsis Analysis of Circulation Controlled Airfoils by : Edward H. Gibbs
Download or read book Analysis of Circulation Controlled Airfoils written by Edward H. Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-contained analysis for arbitrary circulation controlled airfoils in incompressible flow is developed. The analysis predicts the blowing slot conditions required to produce a specified lift coefficient on a given airfoil with given free stream conditions. An iterative procedure is used to find the blowing slot conditions that allow the Thwaites condition of constant pressure in the separated region to be satisfied. With the input given, a potential flow analysis is performed using the Theodorsen method. Boundary layer analyses for the lower and upper surfaces then yield the separation pressure on the lower surface and the boundary layer properties at the slot on the upper surface. The flow is initially laminar and usually becomes turbulent. The Cebeci, Smith finite difference method is used and an eddy viscosity model is used for turbulent flow. Blowing slot values are assumed and a turbulent wall jet analysis is performed to determine the wall pressure at separation on the upper surface.
