Book excerpt: THE ADVENTURES OF THE LAZY GRINGO is the story of stressed out beaten down ex Miami Beach vice cop Jake Westerwheel (aka The Lazy Gringo) who gets set up, knocked down, loses it all, becomes a homeless beach bum, then in a bizarre twist of fate gets a job as bodyguard for Charlie Crowne, a crooked crypto billionaire playboy who is sleeping with Jake's gorgeous ball-busty blonde ex wife, Shana. Crowne has a shadowy past and an even darker future. When Crowne realizes Shana is trying to blackmail him, he sets up Jake to be the fall guy patsy then has her murdered. Crowne then fakes his own death aboard his yacht during a Caribbean hurricane and disappears, taking several billion of his investors money with him. Meanwhile, Jake is arrested for first degree murder. Jake appears so guilty and has so little chance of proving his innocence that he decides to flee to Mexico. South of the border, he buys a Jeep and a new identity, and drives south to the Yucatan in search of evidence to prove Crowne's duplicity, and to clear his own name. The trail goes cold, but at the end of the road Jake finds the magical beach paradise of Mixlic. Knowing he doesn't have much choice, he decides to drop out off the grid, find a funky jungle palapa and stay there, quitting his stressful life and becoming the world's laziest beach bum, aka The Lazy Gringo. He commits himself to mastering the art of being lazy, but just as his worries start melting away both true love and major trouble find him. The Lazy Gringo is shocked back to reality. He falls in love with beautiful eco warrior/yogini Ixschelle who is threatened by Mexican gangsters working for a shadowy business consortium run by the infamous El Gordo Vidal and his Juarez drug cartel. The cartel plans to develop the fifty miles of virgin beach, lagoons and jungle south of Mixlic, a protected biosphere worth billions when transformed into a major tourist center and cruise ship port. Ixschelle and her friends want to stop them, but it is a hopeless David versus Goliath struggle. Despite the danger, the Lazy Gringo volunteers to be Ixschelle's hero, meaning he suddenly finds himself up against the entire Mexican mafia, plus the local police if they find out he is a wanted fugitive. To make matters worse, a girl he had an earlier affair with is found dead at the bottom of a cenote, and once again, our hero is falsely blamed and arrested. The Lazy Gringo finds himself locked in a Mexican prison now double framed as the murderer of not just one, but now two sexy exes. He realizes it is all over, but then the last honest cop Mexico shows up, Federale Colonel Cordero, the nemesis of El Gordo Vidal, and a man with a plan. Cordero tells The Lazy Gringo he has two choices, life in prison or to go to work for him. Cordero compels both The Lazy Gringo and his motley crew of fellow fugitive local badass amigos to become a Magnificent Seven type Suicide Squad bunch of Expendables. Their mission impossible is to set up El Gordo and somehow take him down at his massive beachfront compound. It is an offer they can't refuse, plus El Gordo has a 100 million peso reward on his head, so The Lazy Gringo and amigos go to work for Colonel Cordero, all leading to the big climactic finale.

Book excerpt: Adventures of a Gringo Researcher in Brazil in the 1960s or In Search of Cordel is an entertaining and informative account of Professor Currans first foray in Brazil. In this book he tells two stories: the research to collect cordel and, perhaps more importantly, the travel and the adventures of the year in Brazil. The two are inseparable and complement each other. Chapters include Recife and the Northeast, Travels to the interior of the Northeast, research in Brazils colonial capital of Salvador da Bahia, research and tourism in Rio de Janeiro, trips to the interior of Rio, including Ouro Preto, Congonhas do Campo, and a memorable trip on a wood-burning stern wheeler on the Sao Francisco River in Minas Gerais and Bahia, and finally, research in the Amazon Basin, including both Belem do Para and Manaus. The account is not in academic language but in a colloquial, conversational style. Curran writes as one sitting down with the reader and telling tales of his travels, and perhaps with the author and reader enjoying a caipirinha, or a Brazilian draft beer choppe as they talk.

Book excerpt: Charles Portis’s fourth novel—a truly brilliant, wonderfully bizarre novel by one of our great American novelists. Jimmy Burns is an expatriate American living in Mexico who has an uncommonly astute eye for the absurd little details that comprise your average American. For a time, Jimmy spent his days unearthing pre-Colombian artifacts. Now he makes a living doing small trucking jobs and helping out with the occasional missing person situation—whatever it takes to remain “the very picture of an American idler in Mexico, right down to the grass-green golfing trousers.” But when Jimmy’s laid-back lifestyle is seriously imposed upon by a ninety-pound stalker called Louise, a sudden wave of “hippies” (led by a murderous ex-con guru) in search of psychic happenings, and a group of archaeologists who are unearthing (illegally) Mayan tombs, his simple South-of-the-Border existence faces a clear and present danger.

Book excerpt: Gringo on a Chicken Bus details the unforgettable and delightful experiences of David Koons as he begins the adventure of a lifetime with a move to Central America in 1978 to accept a job as the new assistant director of an archaeological foundation in Guatemala City. While growing up in rural Indiana, the author had never experienced an enormous city without the safety net of friends or family. He shares the fascinating details of how he embarked on a journey as a young man to war-torn Central America with only rudimentary Spanish skills, ultimately testing his confidence and self-esteem in ways he never imagined possible. As he takes his first ride on a chicken bus, where not only suitcases are stored in the luggage rack, but also eggs, cans of gasoline, and of course, chickens, David realizes he is in for several eye-opening experiences over the next few years while living in Central America. With a humorous and appealing voice, Koons offers an entertaining look into a culture with colorful traditions, a resilient welcoming people, and a countryside rich in Mayan archeology.

Book excerpt: A revolutionary philosophy for rookie and veteran travelers alike, Rediscovering Travel “gets to the heart of why we travel” (Matt Kepnes, “Nomadic Matt”). Having captivated millions during his tenure as the New York Times’s “Frugal Traveler,” Seth Kugel is one of our most internationally beloved travel writers. With the initial publication of Rediscovering Travel, he took the corporate modern travel industry to task, determined to reignite an age- old sense of adventure that has virtually been vanquished by the spontaneity- obliterating likes of Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and Starwood points. Now in travel- friendly paperback, this “funny, inspiring and well- crafted” companion (Associated Press) reveals how to make the most of new apps and other digital technologies without being shackled to them. Writing for the tight- belted tourists and the fi rst- class fl yer, the eager student and the comfort- seeking retiree, Kugel shows all readers “not only where to look, but how” (Samantha Brown), and promises that we too can rediscover the joy of discovery. “Travel is not about the destination but the experience. . . . That’s what makes [it] so appealing, so addictive, and that’s what makes Rediscovering Travel so necessary.” — Peter Greenberg

This novel is wise book, full of toughness and humanity and is without question one of the finest works of modern Latin American fiction. One of Fuentes's greatest works, the novel tells the story of Ambrose Bierce, the American writer, soldier, and journalist, and of his last mysterious days in Mexico living among Pancho Villa's soldiers, particularly his encounter with General Tomas Arroyo. In the end, the incompatibility of the two countries (or, paradoxically, their intimacy) claims both men, in a novel that is, most of all, about the tragic history of two cultures in conflict.
