One such activity is the touchstone exercise, in which people create sculptures that represent their vision and purpose as leaders. This report describes how the exercise is conducted, provides examples of sculptures (or touchstones) produced in programs at the Center for Creative Leadership, and considers the effectiveness of the activity as a means of facilitating leadership development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crucial component of leadership is the element of choice. Regardless of how much a person studies leadership, it is essential that he or she makes a conscious choice to accept the leadership role. This book defines leadership, gives examples of research in the field and explains how this knowledge can be used, describes leadership-development programs and surveys, and considers the literature of leadership. Chapters 1 through 4 define leadership and describe ways in which it might be exercised. Chapters 5 and 6 highlight research methods used to demonstrate the impact of improved leadership. The seventh and eighth chapters describe a leadership-development program at a well-known training center, with a focus on the tests and materials completed by participants before arrival and the actual program activities. Various programs in the education and training of leaders and managers are described in chapter 9. The ways in which experience develops and modifies leaders' behaviors are reviewed in the 10th chapter. Chapter 11 examines the uses of survey methods to assess the mood of group members and inform leaders of the effectiveness of their communication programs. Studies of the use of power and position and the outcomes of such use are reviewed in the 12th chapter. Chapter 13 summarizes literature on leadership and cultural differences, and chapter 14 highlights how reported studies can help leaders work better with followers and organizations to achieve objectives. A total of 127 propositions offered throughout the book are summarized in the final chapter. Chapter notes, 8 tables, 6 figures, and an index are included. The appendix contains a list of questions for self-review. (Contains 212 references.) (LMI)

Book excerpt: Failure rate for senior executives is high; consider the frequent stories in the press about yet another CEO who has been fired or has resigned prematurely. Hypothesizing that the selection process is inadequate, CCL researchers used the Peak Selection Simulation to ask 621 decision-makers specific questions about how they use interviews, HR information, and search firm reports to select top-level candidates. This report, containing thirty figures and tables and a comprehensive reference list, documents this research and provides useful insights that can lead to better selection outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research used the online experiment, the Berkana Community of Conversations (BCC), as a case study to explore learning and leadership in a self-organizing online microworld (an internet small world with rules of engagement simulating complex adaptive organization(s)). Based on theories of learning (Papert, 1996), biology of consciousness (Maturana and Varela, 1992), and integral models (Wilber, 1996), an integral methodological design, analyzed languaging and relationships as key data sources. Leadership was mapped as a continuum of behaviors that created effective processes for meaning making, action/direction and accomplishment. Meaning making was tracked in: four directions; three types of connections (exploratory, transformative and linking) and six plus levels. Self-organizing leaders: 1) initiated patterns; 2) developed patterns; and 3) created connections. The same mapping revealed the ontogeny of community learning within organization(s). System-wide order emerged through learning, tracked on four quadrant developmental scales: intentional, behavioral, cultural and social (Wilber, 1996). The microworld demonstrated: connections create meanings (patterns), create relationships, create identity. As a self-organizing microworld, BCC survived seven months; structurally coupled with its environment; and replicated itself within and outside experiment boundaries. Such a microworld can realistically replicate action-based learning situations where leaders learn new ways of leading and organizing.
