This delightful series of adventures includes necessary lessons for skills the young ones will need as adults, and endless fun and excitement as Shelby explores the world around him. Shelby hiccups and stutters when he is upset or nervous, trouble finds him much too easily, and growing up is not what he wants to do. The forest provides him with many good friends, but when their beloved meadow is changed forever they all move to the woods beside a farm, where Shelby meets and learns about farm animals, a whole new experience. The stories relate loosely to the realities of wild Flying Squirrels, but liberal poetic licence allows much more to happen. SHELBY F. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventure with Flying Squirrels" The flying squirrels work together to get their friends out of a treetop village that was damaged by a storm. Summary: They lived in a forest full of flowers and tall trees. The squirrels were very smart and could fly like birds. People also knew these squirrels for being brave and caring. The treetop town, where all the squirrels lived together happily, was hit by a big storm one day. The storm wiped out the town, and some of their friends got lost and needed help in a faraway forest area. The flying squirrels moved quickly to save their friends and get back home safely. They flew a lot before they left because they knew the trip would be hard. To get ready, they also got nuts, berries, and other foods to eat along the way and made their little capes work better so they could move. A lot of things went wrong for the squirrels as they set out on their trip. First, they had to fly across a very wide river. They found some stones to jump on and made sure everyone made it across without getting hurt. Then they had to walk through a part of the forest that was fully covered in thick fog. They stayed together and talked to each other to find their way, so no one got lost. They saw the biggest mountain they had ever seen on their way. They didn't give up, though. As they went up, they pushed each other. When they got to the top, some friendly eagles met them and offered to help them fly farther and higher than they could on their own. The trip brought them closer together and taught them how important it is to be brave, kind, and friends. They finally got to the house of their stuck friend. They fixed the mess and hid their friends. Following their safe return, they shared tales about their trip. It was quiet again in the forest, and the flying squirrels' town in the trees stood tall as proof of how brave and helpful they were. Chapter 1: The Storm A family of flying squirrels lived together in the middle of a huge, bright forest with trees that touched the sky and flowers of every color you can think of. But these squirrels were different from other squirrels. They could glide from tree to tree, which was really cool, and they liked living on the tallest branches where they could see the most. The scenery around their town was beautiful. Their homes were made of sticks and leaves, and they could fly gracefully between the trees to visit each other. Strange things happened one night, though. The wind began to whisper, and then it got louder and stronger, as if it were telling the people who lived in the forest what was going to happen. The night went from being quiet to being filled with lightning, thunder, and howling winds all at once. There was no steady wind in this storm; it was a fierce gale determined to destroy everything in its path. It rained so hard this time that it felt like buckets of water were falling from the sky. Usually, the rain would feed the trees. The trees that the flying squirrels' homes were in began to shake very badly. It looked like a green tornado as the leaves that had made their town look so pretty flew through the air. Along with the rain getting worse, the squirrels prayed a lot inside their homes. It was already morning, and the storm had already done a lot of damage. The pretty town in the trees, which showed how creative the squirrels were and how well they got along with nature, was now just a mess of broken glass. It had taken months to build these houses, and now they were either partially or fully destroyed. The branches that the young squirrels had used as paths and play areas were all over the forest floor. It broke the flying squirrels' hearts to see their town destroyed. One night, everything they had worked for generations was lost. They had lived in the trees for generations. But there was still hope, even though everything was broken. The squirrel community still had a lot of energy. They knew the forest was their home and that they would rebuild it together, making it stronger than before. The storm had made them stronger, but it had also brought them closer together. They were determined to get through this and many other problems. Chapter 2: Decide What to Do. After a big storm destroyed their town in the trees, the flying squirrels were in terrible trouble. Sammy, a brave and smart squirrel, stepped up in the middle of all the damage and chaos and called a meeting. It wasn't just any meeting; it was for a job that was both important and dangerous. "We need to get our friends out of that other part of the forest," Sammy said in a brave and upbeat voice, even though things were bad. Those words didn't just say something; they showed how brave and strong the flying squirrel group was. There was silence in the forest, like it heard what Sammy said. The squirrels got together, and you could see worry and aim in their eyes. Samuel could be seen and heard by all the other squirrels because he was on a stump high up. They were not sure if the road they were used to would be open again after the storm. Also, Sammy's plan was not well received because the other part of the forest was far away, and it wasn't clear how to get there. When Sammy looked at the other squirrels, he saw pride instead of fear. Even though they knew there were risks, it made them sad to think that their friends might get lost and hurt while they waited for help. It looked like the squirrels were taking it seriously when they agreed and nodded. They cared about each other and worked together at this point, which was a turning point. They were aware that the trip would be hard, dangerous, and test both their physical and mental toughness, but they didn't think twice about going on this rescue mission because they wanted to make sure their friends were safe. They were ready to handle any problems that came up so they could get their friends back to their community. Once the choice was made, there was no turning back. They made their choice because they loved each other, were friends, and had a bond that could not be broken. They cared about each other like family and would do anything to keep everyone safe. In the chaos, Sammy and the flying squirrels' bravery stood out like a bright light of hope. But at that time, they were all on the same side, ready to face the unknowns of the journey ahead.

Book excerpt: Ride away on a 'round-the-world adventure of a lifetime—with only a change of clothes and a pearl-handled revolver—in this trascendent novel inspired by the life of Annie Londonderry. “Bicycling has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.”—Susan B. Anthony Who was Annie Londonderry? She captured the popular imagination with her daring ‘round the world trip on two wheels. It was, declared The New York World in October of 1895, “the most extraordinary journey ever undertaken by a woman.” But beyond the headlines, Londonderry was really Annie Cohen Kopchovsky, a young, Jewish mother of three small children, who climbed onto a 42-pound Columbia bicycle and pedaled away into history. Reportedly set in motion by a wager between two wealthy Boston merchants, the bet required Annie not only to circle the earth by bicycle in 15 months, but to earn $5,000 en route, as well. This was no mere test of a woman’s physical endurance and mental fortitude; it was a test of a woman’s ability to fend for herself in the world. Often attired in a man’s riding suit, Annie turned every Victorian notion of female propriety on its head. Not only did she abandon, temporarily, her role of wife and mother (scandalous in the 1890s), she earned her way selling photographs of herself, appearing as an attraction in stores, and by turning herself into a mobile billboard. Zheutlin, a descendent of Annie, brilliantly probes the inner life and seeming boundless courage of this outlandish, brash, and charismatic woman. In a time when women could not vote and few worked outside the home, Annie was a master of public relations, a consummate self-promoter, and a skillful creator of her own myth. Yet, for more than a century her remarkable story was lost to history. In SPIN, this remarkable heroine and her marvelous, stranger-than-fiction story is vividly brought to life for a new generation.

Dazzled by its size, he failed to focus his attention, watching the acorn instead of where he was going. He flew into the side of a tree and hurt his wing, then tumbled to the ground. The squirrels below immediately called an ambulance. Bernie woke up in the animal hospital where the doctor patched him up but told him he'd never fly again. Bernie determined to find a way to fly again. With the help of his mother and his friend Julie, he did.
