They are also in love with basketball because of the father, Roger Rayl, who still plays pickup games against high school players in his late forties and writes about it constantly as a sports editor for the local newspaper. Roger has a great love for basketball and has passed it on to his son, Randy, who is a still-developing player and a big dreamer. Roger teaches Randy his famous hook shot, which later enables him to move from a manager to a varsity player. Roger eventually begins doing freelance writing for a national publication, which allows him to travel and cover major national tournaments. The town of Lincoln, ironically, is a baseball town with many state titles and a great coach. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is also a very important part of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An affecting, insightful and warm memoir of growing up Samoan in New Zealand — and of coping with heart disease. Andrew Fiu came to Ponsonby, Auckland as a three-year-old, part of the wave of immigration from Samoa that turned Auckland's inner city suburbs into a vibrant cultural melting pot. At 14 he was misdiagnosed as having flu when in fact he had rheumatic fever, a disease endemic in Pacific Island communities. As a result of the damage to his heart he was rushed to hospital. Since that time Andrew has had five open heart surgeries, a record anywhere. He has spent so much time in hospital that he says he grew up there, experiencing tender and expert care from doctors and nurses but also enduring appalling racism. This memoir is the story of his hospital years, his clashes with his parents' traditional attitudes, the wisdom he learnt from his fellow patients and the medical miracles perfomed on his heart by famous surgeon Alan Kerr. It's the story of growing up a Pacific Islander in Auckland, a reflection on the bad old days when schools made Pacific Island children anglicise their names and hospitals did not have translators, an insight into the inter-generational tensions in Pacific Island migrant families and also a testimony to deep friendship, boundless love and bucketloads of humour. Written in a warm, personable and humorous style, this book is part of the cultural sea-change happening in New Zealand: first the play Niu Sila, then Bro'Town, No. 2 and Sione's Wedding and now the first memoir from a 40-something Samoan, written with grace, love and insight. The Weekend Herald’s Canvas magazine wrote: ‘Written with verge and humour, Purple Heart is a revelation.’ The New Zealand Listener, singled it out as one of the year’s best memoirs, praising its humour, light touch, and lack of self-pity.

The two preteen boys begin their journey while vacationing with several other families at Cooper’s Camp in Muncie Valley, Pennsylvania. Camping helps establish the warning of checking your boots for snakes. Primitive camping facilities does not infringe on cooking great meals, especially breakfast. The outhouse facilities and lack of running water are amenities that are tolerated but not embraced. The friends experience the tragedy of having a friend kidnapped. They also share a high school class trip to Germany. Tim learns that volunteering for anything can be rewarding, but there can also be unpleasant consequences. Tim and Brett feels society’s disdain for Vietnam veterans. However, they ultimately establish a challenging annual mountain brotherhood experience for veterans. During one wheelchair challenge, the veterans’ pickup basketball team faces the West Point basketball team. The cadets are outmatched. The two friends share adventures in life to include business opportunities. Their businesses are thriving, but the two friends see the need to adjust their business model to keep up with advancements in technology to remain viable. Tim ultimately establishes a new business to accommodate an unfortunate disability he experiences as a result of a rescue. Tim does not allow his disabilities to define him. Thus, he embodies the meaning of an “overcomer.” Tim’s acceptance of his disabilities is a lesson learned well by his daughter in a way that she ultimately overshadows her father’s popularity.

Courageous, heartfelt, and honest, Hope Unseen challenges readers to question their doubts, not their beliefs, and depend upon God no matter what. A nervous glance from a man in a parked car. Muted instincts from a soldier on patrol. Violent destruction followed by total darkness. Two weeks later, Scotty Smiley woke up in Walter Reed Army Medical Center, helpless . . . and blind. Blindness became Scotty’s journey of supreme testing. As he lay helpless in the hospital, Captain Smiley resented the theft of his dreams—becoming a CEO, a Delta Force operator, or a four-star general. With his wife Tiffany’s love and the support of his family and friends, Scotty was transformed—the injury only intensifying his indomitable spirit. Since the moment he jumped out of a hospital bed and forced his way through nurses and cords to take a simple shower, Captain Scotty Smiley has climbed Mount Rainier, won an ESPY as Best Outdoor Athlete, surfed, skydived, become a father, earned an MBA from Duke, taught leadership at West Point, commanded an army company, and won the MacArthur Leadership Award. Scotty and Tiffany Smiley have lived out a faith so real that it will inspire you to question your own doubts, push you to serve something bigger than yourself, and encourage you to cling to a Hope Unseen.
