A fortune teller once told Mila she'd find a man who would take her breath away. She refrained from telling her it would be literally while Mila ran for her life. Having always done what is expected of her, Mila dresses the part, only dates college boys with exemplary backgrounds, and doesn't ask questions. Not about her papa's absences or his refusal to let her set foot in her birthplace--Russia. Suffocated by the rules and unanswered questions, Mila does what she's always wanted to. She boards a plane to Moscow. She never expected to fall for a man on the way. One with unexplained wealth, tattoos on his hands, and secrets in his eyes. But it doesn't take long for his caress to become a rough grasp muffling her screams. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Unfortunately, a Russian winter is the coldest of them all, and Mila soon learns the only way to escape intact is to do the impossible and thaw her captor's heart.

Book excerpt: When a young Muslim girl in Paris is accused of stealing truffles, the Doemner siblings must race against time to prove the girl's innocence and find the true culprit. When a Parisian museum hires her mother, an art historian, to authenticate a new painting before purchasing it, Cora Doemner and her siblings, Bradley and Jackson, along with her geologist and archaeologist dad, find themselves headed to Paris. Instead of the typical sightseeing, Cora's trip ends up being more than she ever bargained for.Cora in visiting the Louvre, sketching one exhibit's lovely gems, when an old man with white hair sits next to her and admires her mood ring, gifted to her by her geologist father. The man's intense interest in Cora and her ring unsettles the young girl who believes her ring's changing colors warns her of thorny situations. Later, when the Doemner family are invited to a restaurant owned by Mrs. Doemner's old friend from her Paris school days, Monsieur Auguste Bocuse, they are given the white glove treatment as his special guests. But things take a quick turn for the worse when police show up, handcuffing a young girl working in the kitchen, accused of stealing very expensive truffles. The young lady, a Muslim, steadfastly denies the accusation, having always been grateful to Monsieur Bocuse for giving her a chance when others in the city did not due to her culture. The Doemner siblings are adamant that Jeanne, the accused thief, is innocent and they are disgusted at her mistreatment. When they learn Monsieur Bocuse will be firing her due to the episode, guilty or not, Cora is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery. With the gang only in Paris for three days, it's a race against time to find the real truffle thief and to save their new friend, Jeanne. But how? Who would want to steal truffles and why? Their sleuthing leads them down a path of adventure as they encounter, once again, the old man in their pursuit, a secret about Cora's mood ring, and an unlikely culprit to their mystery.

Book excerpt: In The Path Not Taken, Jeff Horn argues that—contrary to standard, Anglocentric accounts—French industrialization was not a failed imitation of the laissez-faire British model but the product of a distinctive industrial policy that led, over the long term, to prosperity comparable to Britain's. Despite the upheavals of the Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, France developed and maintained its own industrial strengths. France was then able to take full advantage of the new technologies and industries that emerged in the "second industrial revolution," and by the end of the nineteenth century some of France's industries were outperforming Britain's handily. The Path Not Taken shows that the foundations of this success were laid during the first industrial revolution. Horn posits that the French state's early attempt to emulate Britain's style of industrial development foundered because of revolutionary politics. The "threat from below" made it impossible for the state or entrepreneurs to control and exploit laborers in the British manner. The French used different means to manage labor unruliness and encourage innovation and entrepreneurialism. Technology is at the heart of Horn's analysis, and he shows that France, unlike England, often preferred still-profitable older methods of production in order to maintain employment and forestall revolution. Horn examines the institutional framework established by Napoleon's most important Minister of the Interior, Jean-Antoine Chaptal. He focuses on textiles, chemicals, and steel, looks at how these new institutions created a new industrial environment. Horn's illuminating comparison of French and British industrialization should stir debate among historians, economists, and political scientists.

Book excerpt: Named one of WIRED’s "The Best Pop Culture That Got Us Through 2020" In Analogia, technology historian George Dyson presents a startling look back at the analog age and life before the digital revolution—and an unsettling vision of what comes next. In 1716, the philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz spent eight days taking the cure with Peter the Great at Bad Pyrmont in Saxony, trying to persuade the tsar to launch a voyage of discovery from Russia to America and to adopt digital computing as the foundation for a remaking of life on earth. In two classic books, Darwin Among the Machines and Turing’s Cathedral, George Dyson chronicled the realization of the second of Leibniz’s visions. In Analogia, his pathbreaking new book, he brings the story full circle, starting with the Russian American expedition of 1741 and ending with the beyond-digital revolution that will complete the transformation of the world. Dyson enlists a startling cast of characters, from the time of Catherine the Great to the age of machine intelligence, and draws heavily on his own experiences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and onward to the rain forest of the Northwest Coast. We are, Dyson reveals, entering a new epoch in human history, one driven by a generation of machines whose powers are no longer under programmable control. Includes black-and-white illustrations
