Book excerpt: The Adventures of Dewey, the Alien is the first tale in a trilogy by Marshall Lefferts.Professor Nate Johnston is a Human entomologist, conducting research in the Amazon Rainforest. There, he unexpectedly meets an Extraterrestrial explorer (who will eventually come to be named "Dewey" by his new Human friend). At first, they are most apprehensive of each other and it almost proves fatal for Professor Johnston. But after some very tense moments, they become enchanted with each other and decide to go on a little adventure, galivanting about the Milky Way in Dewey's spaceship...only to get into more trouble than they ever bargained for. Their time together is short, but their unique, intergalactic friendship is sealed forever by the experiences they share, and in a cliff-hanger ending it is obvious that more interaction between Humans and Aliens is on the horizon. This first book from the creative, witty mind of Lefferts will draw readers of all ages into an unfolding saga of unpredictable and exhilarating moments. It features characters and creatures that delight the senses and bring a fresh approach to the often redundant way we think of what extraterrestrial encounters might be like. There is terror, adventure, happiness, fulfilment, sadness, tragedy and an abundance of sheer fun all synchronously bundled into this first book, which builds the foundation and excitement for its two forthcoming sequels.

Book excerpt: Dewey Webster is admitted country hick from Tennessee. He has torn up numerous bars, hired a mob lawyer to settle a divorce, acted on off-off-off-Broadway, and has written pulp fiction stories. The large-bodied Dewey's adventures take place in 1947. Previously told in the "Dewey Chronicles" series, these stories are combined in one volume for the first time. Follow Dewey as he becomes a covert operator for the U.S. government; fights evil extra-terrestrial aliens; defends his dog in court; and goes back in time to the medieval ages. While Dewey is hard-headed and is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, he has unusual insight and a straightforward approach to life that serves him well. A good right-hand haymaker punch comes in handy, too. Give Dewey a pickup, a shotgun and a good "dawg," and he'll take on anything or anyone at any time.

Book excerpt: There has probably never been anything like it in UFO history, but the UFO fever that gripped the small British town of Warminster for about a decade is now largely forgotten. It was one of the largest UFO flaps ever to occur. Thousands of witnesses reported seeing the "Warminster Thing." The hilltops around the town attracted a loyal band of followers, all waiting for the magic sighting, the landing, the contact. The authors were themselves among the skywatchers and spent nights on Cradle Hill, the center of the phenomenon, watching and waiting for UFOs, but also watching and listening to the witnesses and ufologists. IN ALIEN HEAT introduces the Warminster phenomenon to a new generation of readers. It contains a short history of the phenomenon, places it in its social and historical context, and examines the possible mechanisms that initiated and sustained this remarkable UFO flap.

Broader themes of friendship, looking beyond appearances, and second chances are interwoven throughout the story. "In this promising debut, Nancy Golden weaves together a dynamic plot brimming with science and bubbling with humanity." --Kathleen Baldwin, best selling author of the Stranje House novels. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Hill is about an ordinary boy who grows up in relatively normal times but who finds himself thrust into an extraordinary position. Growing up in suburban Boston, Michael enjoys the trials and tribulations that all adolescents go through, from the seemingly tyrannical mother, to girl problems, to run-ins with the law. From there he escapes to college out in Colorado with his best friend, Paul, where they begin to forge new relationships with those around them. It is one girl in particular that has caught Michael's eye, and he alternately pines for her and laments ever meeting her. It is on their true "first" date that things go strangely askew. This is where the story truly takes a paranormal twist. Mike soon finds himself captive aboard an alien vessel, fighting for his very survival. The aliens have devised gladiator-type games. The games are of two-fold importance for the aliens: one is their entertainment value, and the other is that the aliens want to see how combative humans are, what our weaknesses and strengths are. They want to better learn how to attack and defeat us. The battles are to the death on varying terrains that are computer-generated. Follow Mike and Paul as they battle for their lives and try to keep the U.S. safe, in the first book of Mark Tufo's Indian Hill series.

A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Aliens: They have taken the form of immigrants, invaders, lovers, heroes, cute creatures that want our candy or monsters that want our flesh. For more than a century, movies and television shows have speculated about the form and motives of alien life forms. Movies first dipped their toe into the genre in the 1940s with Superman cartoons and the big screen's first story of alien invasion (1945's The Purple Monster Strikes). More aliens landed in the 1950s science fiction movie boom, followed by more television appearances (The Invaders, My Favorite Martian) in the 1960s. Extraterrestrials have been on-screen mainstays ever since. This book examines various types of the on-screen alien visitor story, featuring a liberal array of alien types, designs and motives. Each chapter spotlights a specific film or TV series, offering comparative analyses and detailing the tropes, themes and cliches and how they have evolved over time. Highlighted subjects include Eternals, War of the Worlds, The X-Files, John Carpenter's The Thing and Attack of the 50-Foot Woman.

Book excerpt: John Dewey was one of the foremost social and political philosophers of the twentieth century. He worked to reorient philosophy toward the concrete problems of humankind and tirelessly addressed himself to the public issues of his day, remaining at the center of heated intellectual and public controversy. This book contains the most complete documentary account of Dewey's political thought and activities available. Dewey's enduring insights into democratic politics are still relevant today. Dewey grounded his political ideals historically within the American democratic experience and sought to adapt Jeffersonian idealism to the corporate-industrial age. Like Jefferson, Dewey maintained that the roots of the American political tradition are moral, not merely a means to material gain. Dewey's theory of democracy was designed to reconcile freedom with authority, social stability with the need for reform, and universal standards with specific circumstances. Dewey maintained an unyielding commitment to scientific intelligence and free critical thought. He recognized that at the heart of all policy making is a value judgment. Nevertheless, he held that rational grounds can be found to justify some courses of conduct as more valid than others. By examining Dewey's political activities, The Politics of John Dewey assesses the viability of pragmatic liberalism by its own standard and describes the significant contributions of this influential American philosopher.
