Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Grof presents a useful model of the psyche—a model extended by his thirty years of studying non-ordinary states of consciousness. It is useful for understanding such phenomena as shamanism, mysticism, psychedelic states, spontaneous visionary experiences, and psychotic episodes. The model is also useful in explaining the dynamics of experiential psychotherapies and a variety of sociopolitical manifestations such as war and revolution. This book might have been entitled Beyond Drugs. The second part describes the principles and process of the non-pharmacological technique developed by the author and his wife, Christina, for self-exploration and for psychotherapy. Grof explores in detail the components of this technique. He describes its method, its effective mechanisms, as well as its goals and potential. Its practice is simple, since it utilizes the natural healing capacity of the psyche.

Book excerpt: People react very differently to the process of ageing. Some people shy away from old age for as long as they can and eventually spend it reflecting on times when they were physically and mentally stronger and more independent. For others old age is embraced as a new adventure and something to look forward to. In this book psychoanalyst Danielle Quinodoz highlights the value of old age and the fact that although many elderly people have suffered losses, either of their own good health or through bereavement, most have managed to retain the most important thing – their sense of self. Quinodoz argues that growing old provides us with the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and instead of facing it with dread, it should be celebrated. Divided into accessible chapters this book covers topics including: the internal life-history remembering phases of life anxiety about death being a psychoanalyst and growing old. Throughout Growing Old the author draws on both her clinical experience of working with the elderly, and her own personal experience of growing old. This makes it an interesting read for both practising psychoanalysts, and those who wish to gain a greater insight of the natural progression into later life.

Book excerpt: He had had thoughts of getting close to Sadie from the very first day he’d seen her. And now, with it possibly happening, how could he say or do anything that might possibly ruin his chances? As he sat up Sadie took a sponge and started to scrub his back, neck, and shoulders. She worked around to the front and washed under his arms and on the front of his chest. As she did so she said, “You know, Tad, I am not so much older than you. I have just led a harder life and grew up a little faster than you have. I was forced to take care of myself at a rather early age. I had to leave home because my step-father was taking advantage of me, and I couldn’t stay and let that happen. My mother was a drunk and wouldn’t admit to herself that her husband was a bastard. It’s hard for a girl to make it on her own. I fell into the only thing I could do to make a living.” “It’s okay Sadie, I know deep down you are a good person. I only wish you didn’t have to do what you do with other men.” “Yeah well, don’t you judge me for what I do. You don’t understand what I’ve been through that’s all.” “I’m sorry, Sadie I didn’t mean to sound like I was judging you. I guess I’m just a little jealous of the other men, that’s all.” “Jealous, what do you have to be jealous about? We aren’t tied to one another. I’m just offering you a bath that’s all. Besides, I couldn’t stand the smell of you any longer.” As she said this, she let a smile develop on her lips and looked at him softly and said, “Were you really jealous of those other men I was with?” “I must have been, I couldn’t help but think about you, and I wanted it to be me you were with.” “Well I’m with you now, so shut up and let me wash your hair.” She poured some shampoo into her hands and started to rub his scalp and hair. Once she was done, she said, “Now put your head back so I can rinse your hair with some warm water.” When satisfied with getting his hair and head rinsed, she stood up and said, “Now wash the rest of you, and when you’re done, take this towel and dry off. You can pull the plug and let the tub drain. I’ll be waiting for you in the other room. Come out when you’re ready. Tad could hardly wait to finish up and get rinsed and dried off. He tried not to make too big a mess in the tub and floor, taking his time to dry enough to step out of the tub so he wouldn’t get water all over. Once done he wrapped the towel around his waist and stepped out into the bedroom. She was standing on the opposite side of the bed and said for him to turn around and sit on the edge of the bed. Tad did as he was told and waited for her to make the next move. As he sat there, he could see her coming around the end of the bed to stand in front of him. She then said in a soft voice, “Now, you’re going to find out what it is like to be with a woman.” He could hardly control himself but did his best to remain calm and relaxed. He didn’t want to look right at her for fear of getting out of control. She moved a little closer to the bed and spread his knees just enough so she could stand between them. As she stood there, Tad looked up a little where his gaze fell on her thin waist. As he slowly moved his gaze up, he could see that she was unfastening the top button of her dress, exposing her soft skin around the neck and upper chest. She moved her hand down to the second button and undid it revealing even more skin and the sides of her firm breasts. His towel started to move as his excitement grew. The next two buttons became undone, and he could see her full breasts and deep cleavage between them. She gave him a sly grin and said, “I know this is your first time, Tad, so just let me do all the work. You just try to relax, and I will show you what to do.” Tad took a deep swallow, and his face turned red. He knew he was going to experience something he had never experienced before and possibly never would again. She placed her hands on the back of his head and slowly pulled him toward her plac

Book excerpt: A young woman follows winter across five continents on a physical and spiritual journey that tests her body and soul, in this transformative memoir, full of heart and courage, that speaks to the adventurousness in all of us. Steph Jagger had always been a force of nature. Dissatisfied with the passive, limited roles she saw for women growing up, she emulated the men in her life—chasing success, climbing the corporate ladder, ticking the boxes, playing by the rules of a masculine ideal. She was accomplished. She was living "The Dream." But it wasn't her dream. Then the universe caught her attention with a sign: Raise Restraining Device. Steph had seen this ski lift sign on countless occasions in the past, but the familiar words suddenly became a personal call to shake off the life she had built in a search for something different, something more. Steph soon decided to walk away from the success and security she had worked long and hard to obtain. She quit her job, took a second mortgage on her house, sold everything except her ski equipment and her laptop, and bought a bundle of plane tickets. For the next year, she followed winter across North and South America, Asia, Europe, and New Zealand—and up and down the mountains of nine countries—on a mission to ski four million vertical feet in a year. What hiking was for Cheryl Strayed, skiing became for Steph: a crucible in which to crack open her life and get to the very center of herself. But she would have to break herself down—first physically, then emotionally—before she could start to rebuild. And it was through this journey that she came to understand how to be a woman, how to love, and how to live authentically. Electrifying, heartfelt, and full of humor, Unbound is Steph’s story—an odyssey of courage and self-discovery that, like Wild and Eat, Pray, Love, will inspire readers to remove their own restraining devices and pursue the life they are meant to lead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes Grof's experiences and observations from more than forty years of research into non-ordinary states of consciousness. This accessible and comprehensive overview of the work of Stanislav Grof, one of the founders of transpersonal psychology, was specifically written to acquaint newcomers with his work. Serving as a summation of his career and previous works, this entirely new book is the source to introduce Grof's enormous contributions to the fields of psychiatry and psychology, especially his central concept of holotropic experience, where holotropic signifies "moving toward wholeness." Grof maintains that the current basic assumptions and concepts of psychology and psychiatry require a radical revision based on the intensive and systematic research of holotropic experience. He suggests that a radical inner transformation of humanity and a rise to a higher level of consciousness might be humankind's only real hope for the future. "It's rare to find a textbook that is both extremely informative and enjoyable to read. Psychology of the Future has to be one of the first ones I've ever come across ... Each chapter brought an entirely new concept, theory, or method that was just as engaging as the previous one." — Dr. Tami Brady, TCM Reviews "This book is by a pioneering genius in consciousness research. It presents the full spectrum of Grof's ideas, from his earliest mappings of using LSD psychotherapy, to his clinical work with people facing death, to his more recent work with holotropic breathing, to his latest thoughts about the cosmological implications of consciousness research and the prospects for dealing with an emerging planetary crisis. Grof has always been one of the most original thinkers in the transpersonal field, and his creativity has kept pace with the maturity of his overall vision." -- Michael Washburn, author of Transpersonal Psychology in Psychoanalytic Perspective "Grof offers an outstanding contribution to the ever-growing debate about the nature of human consciousness and about the place of humankind in the cosmos. If more psychiatrists could be persuaded that human consciousness transcends the limitations of the physical brain, and instead is but an aspect of what may best be described as 'cosmic consciousness,' we could not only expect treatment modalities to change, but we could also anticipate the possibility of culture-wide rethinking of the basic presuppositions of modern cosmology, the cosmology that grounds Western institutions, ideologies, and beliefs about the nature of personhood." -- Michael E. Zimmerman, author of Contesting Earth's Future: Radical Ecology and Postmodernity Stanislav Grof, MD, is a psychiatrist with more than fifty years of experience in research of non-ordinary states of consciousness. He has been Principal Investigator in a psychedelic research program at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Prague, Czechoslovakia; Chief of Psychiatric Research at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center; Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University; and Scholar-in-Residence at the Esalen Institute. He is currently Professor of Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, conducts professional training programs in holotropic breathwork, and gives lectures and seminars worldwide. He is one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology and the founding president of the International Transpersonal Association (ITA). In 2007, he was granted the prestigious Vision 97 award from the Vaclav and Dagmar Havel Foundation in Prague. He is the author and editor of many books, including The Adventure of Self-Discovery: Dimensions of Consciousness and New Perspectives in Psychotherapy and Inner Exploration; Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science; Beyond the Brain: Birth, Death, and Transcendence in Psychotherapy; The Cosmic Game: Explorations of the Frontiers of Human Consciousness; and Human Survival and Consciousness Evolution; all published by SUNY Press.

Book excerpt: The dreams we dream at night arise from a larger sphere of biological awareness rooted in our bodies and our brains, which predates our conceptual intelligence by untold millions of years. It informs us by means of seemingly nonsensical images that have the power to make a huge difference in our lives and in the trajectory of our civilization. Unfortunately, in the bulk of us it remains trapped within these and can neither get out into our lives nor into our endeavors. The problem is that, like Nazi physicists thought Einstein's theory nonsense, like the Roman Pagans thought Jesus's words nonsense, like the Catholic church thought Galileo's notions about the solar system nonsense, and like all too many of us today still view dreams as nonsense - when it does come forth to express itself to us, we dismiss it out of hand. We don't understand the language of our own dreams for the same reason that our predecessors couldn't understand the words of Einstein, Jesus, Galileo, Buddha, or the many others who managed to let out what was extraordinary in themselves. These individuals are now recognized as extraordinary for they changed the world, each in a most important way. They were initially misunderstood, it turns out, because they spoke in metaphor, the same language we find in dreams. There are any number of books on dreams that tell us what the authors presume to know about dreams from the vantage point of the particular science or psychological school of thought they ground themselves in. We've all read far too many dream books of that sort. This book is different. It's not a book about what anybody knows about dreams. Instead it focuses on what our dreams know about us, which is far, far more interesting, amazing, and potentially life-changing. Then, with a succession of real life examples it goes on to demonstrate exactly how we ourselves can avail ourselves of this knowledge. What's most impressive in these examples is how important and life-enhancing the information in each dream turns out to be for the dreamer and what a remarkable variety of intellectual, emotional, creative, sensual, and spiritual powers a simple dream can being forward in any one of us. This isn't just a book that informs, but one that transforms. It's impossible to read through the succession of interesting detective stories of dreamers making sense of their own dreams and not come away with a passing fluency in the language that released in each an understanding of their dream, which is the same language that released the genius of Jesus, Shakespeare, and Einstein. The language is metaphor - our native tongue. It's not that dreams don't make sense. It's that they make so much more sense than we do that it's not so easy to understand them. A group of individuals, like a chain of computers working together on the same problem, makes all the difference. It's like there is a super-mind in the room with us and to this larger intelligence the dream makes sense. Each example the book presents of this happening goes out of its way to detail exactly how the group process accomplishes this and precisely what kinds of mistakes can stifle its progress. So, in addition to being a book that concerns itself with the kinds of things dreams know about us, this is a book about exactly how we can find out precisely what dreams know. Expect the book not just to change the way you think about dreams. Expect it to change the way you live your life and do your work.

Book excerpt: • The author is a distinguished member of the Explorers Club • The author is an unexpected adventurer, disarmingly positive and companionable • Lively stories of remote treks around the world Way Out There is an account of J. Robert Harris’s extraordinary exploits while backpacking in some of the world’s most tantalizing places―largely alone and unsupported. And after almost fifty years of wilderness travel, “J. R.,” as he’s known, has plenty of tales to tell! His stories are by turns funny, tragic, and uplifting, and are all told in his down‐to‐earth, friendly style. For J. R., it all began in 1966 when, as a young New Yorker, he impulsively drives his VW Beetle across the country to the very end of the northernmost road in Alaska, searching for an answer to a simple question: What is it like to be way out there? How this happened, whom he met, and what he encountered along the way became the foundation for a lifelong attraction to trekking and adventure travel. Subsequent chapters chronologically explore some of his many journeys, revealing an enduring wanderlust honed by his emerging maturity and outdoor skills. Stories of J. R.’s solo treks point to stark contrasts between his urban upbringing and his wilderness wanderings, while tales of adventure with small but diverse groups of friends are enriched by their collective experiences and varying viewpoints about exploration. Way Out There is a lively yet introspective book by a restless soul that will attract countless readers who love to travel, as well as armchair adventurers and communities looking for outdoor role models. The foreword is by the late Dr. Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen fighter pilots during World War I
