Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of national development especially in developing countries like Nigeria envisages improvements in critical infrastructure, including expansion in transportation, industrial base, and the provision of employment opportunities in the polity. Transportation lies at the foundational levels of connectivity without which the economy of any nation will almost remain at a standstill. The imperial masters as early as 1896 and 1905 constructed the railway system and the Lagos Port respectively as fundamental measures of connectivity and national development. Effective transportation network ensures that goods and services are easily moved to desired destinations. It is also the means by which parents move their children to and from schools, go to receive healthcare, go to markets and attend to all other personal and business engagements. Transportation guarantees that people are able to go to work; either by road, rail, water, or air. This is probably one reason for a boom in the construction of highways or expressways, the flyovers, bridges, road networks, railways, seaports and airports in Nigeria. As the result of geographical differences in the environments, different countries adopt different methods of transportation network management to suit them. For example, in Bangladesh, the transportation management strategy focuses on rural growth centres. The growth centres are selected on the basis of their socioeconomic importance and potential. This provides the justification for the reconstruction and upgrading of the growth centres and markets. In Brazil, the transportation network management system involves the paving of bus routes among others. Nigeria has different agencies and associations, for her road, rail, sea, and air transportation, in addition to robust PPPs. The investigation literature review research design was adopted for this study and the result showed positive association between transportation network management and connectivity necessary for national development. The study was not exhaustive because of acute lack of current relevant literature. Further study should therefore, examine the relationship between underdevelopment and transportation network management in Nigeria. The study recommends that government should take immediate steps to ressurate Air Nigeria to enhance the scope of air transportation in Nigeria.

Book Synopsis The Geography of Transport Systems by : Jean-Paul Rodrigue
Download or read book The Geography of Transport Systems written by Jean-Paul Rodrigue and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this book. The third edition of The Geography of Transport Systems has been revised and updated to provide an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation. This text provides greater discussion of security, energy, green logistics, as well as new and updated case studies, a revised content structure, and new figures. Each chapter covers a specific conceptual dimension including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts. A final chapter contains core methodologies linked with transport geography such as accessibility, spatial interactions, graph theory and Geographic Information Systems for transportation (GIS-T). This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field, with a broad overview of its concepts, methods, and areas of application. The accompanying website for this text contains a useful additional material, including digital maps, PowerPoint slides, databases, and links to further reading and websites. The website can be accessed at: http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans This text is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interest in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering.

Book Synopsis The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies by : Dorina Pojani
Download or read book The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies written by Dorina Pojani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume discuses urban transport issues, policies, and initiatives in twelve of the world’s major emerging economies – Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and Vietnam - countries with large populations that have recently experienced large changes in urban structure, motorization and all the associated social, economic, and environmental impacts in positive and negative senses. Contributions on each of these twelve countries focus on one or more major cities per country. This book aims to fill a gap in the transport literature that is crucial to understanding the needs of a large portion of the world’s urban population, especially in view of the southward shift in economic power. Readers will develop a better understanding of urban transport problems and policies in nations where development levels are below those of richer countries (mainly in the northern hemisphere) but where the rate of economic growth is often increasing at a faster rate than the wealthiest nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the politics and economics of infrastructure development in Nigeria from Independence in 1960 up to 2015, and the role of good governance in promoting the socioeconomic wellbeing of citizens. Arguing for the need for transformational leadership in infrastructure development, the chapters examine policy issues and survey the various administrative, economic, and social-political reforms that have impacted infrastructure development in Nigeria. The author also discusses current national development plans and Vision 20:2020; challenges to infrastructure development, including corruption; and the future potential of a strong infrastructure network for the economy and citizens. Drawing upon his experience within government departments, as well as existing models of leadership and governance, the author explores the role of infrastructure development in promoting the wellbeing and growth of Nigeria. Combining theory with practical examples of good governance, this book will be of interest for students and researchers of political science and infrastructure development in Africa.
