Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Action of the Commission of Assembly in Professor Smith's Case: Explained and Vindicated This has been called in question. It has been stoutly, vehemently denied. It has been so by Professor Smith himself, and by a host of his supporters, lay and clerical, in reasons of dissent, overtures, letters, speeches - in every variety of form and expression imaginable. The decision come to by the Commission has been pronounced ultra wires, unconstitutional, incompetent, null and void, with much more of a similar strain. It has been represented as tyrannical, subversive of all law, and placing in peril the rights and liberties of every othee-bearer and member of the Church. No doubt a great change has recently appeared. Some wisdom has been learned. The toning down has been remarkable. The elders' manifesto, as lately issued, has had the central and forcible ultra wires clause eliminated. The Aberdeen overture, which musthave been designed to strike the key-note and be a model for all others, has been openly withdrawn, and a new one substituted, in which there is a similar abandon ment of the high constitutional ground. The general way now is to say that the Commission's action appears to be so and so - has this or that aspect or tendency, and any charge of violating fundamental law and order is rather insinuated than asserted, timidly conveyed in round-about or ambiguous phrases instead of being posi tively and plainly stated. It may therefore seem hardly necessary now to argue the question. Practically, a retreat has been beaten, and a defence of the position assailed may be looked on as superfluous. But as the idea has been largely and advantageously made use of, as it yet lingers in certain quarters, and as the minds of many may not be clear regarding it, a brief explanation may still be of service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Speeches: Delivered at a Meeting of Free Church Office-Bearers Who Disapproved of the Action of the Commission in the Case of Prof. W. Robertson Smith, Held in the Christian Institute, Glasgow, Friday, December 30, 1880 HtC. Sep )bb I j; Report Of Public Meeting. Last niglit (Dec.3(1) a i)ul)lir, meeting of lay officc-hcarcrs connected with the Free Church who disapprove of the action of the Commission in the case of Professor Robertson Smith was held in the Christian Institute. There was a large attendance of officebearers. The chair was occupied by Dr. W.G. Blackie; and beside him on the platform were the Rev. Mr. Scrymgeour, Sheriff Murray, Professor MKendrick, and Messrs. Jas. Campbell of Tulliechewan; Thos. Russell of Ascog; Peter Gardner, W.S., G.W. Clark, John MClure, Walter Duncan, J.Morison, R.Rule, Walter Macfarlane, A. A. Ferguson, J.Hart, J.L. Mitchell, J.Lawson, Boyd, Campbell-liouglas, Gilbert Eeith, N.Caw, S.Barclay, A.S. Taylor, Alex. AVatt, and G.M. Kerr, ike. The meeting having been opened with prayer by the Rev. Mr. Scrymgeour, The Chairman said in the first instance he had to read certain letters of apology which had been received from some gentlemen who were prevented being present. The first was from the Lord Dean of Guild, who said that while he was not learned enough to form an opinion on questions of Hebrew scholarship, he professed to have an opinion on the more important question of justice and fair dealing. He trusted that the next General Assembly might find the recent proceedings of the Commission to be unconstitutional, otherwise the general principle of Presbyterian Church government would fall under public condemnation. Letters had also been received from Mr. James Stevenson; from Mr. A.S. Baird; from Mr. Ness, Bellahouston Academy; from Mr. James Templeton; and from Dr. Anderson Kirkwood. The Chairman then said Fellow office-bearers, we are met tonight for a very grave and important purpose to call in question the legality and wisdom of the action of one of our Church Courts. We are met because we believe our liberties as office-bearers of the Free Church are endangered by the recent action of the Commission of the General Assembly in the case of Professor Robertson Smith; and at the same time to take such steps as may be competent to preserve our status and defend our rights. We are not to discuss the merits of Professor Robertson Smiths case; we leave them to be dealt with by the constitutional Church Courts. Consequently those who hold opposite views respecting the merits of that case may consistently unite together in carrying out the objects of this meeting. Book Synopsis W. Robertson Smith and the Sociological Study of Religion by : T. O. Beidelman
Download or read book W. Robertson Smith and the Sociological Study of Religion written by T. O. Beidelman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Robertson Smith (1846-94) was one of the most profound and versatile Victorian thinkers--a principal figure in the development of social anthropology and the founder of modern sociology of religion. In W. Robertson Smith and the Sociological Study of Religion, T. O. Beidelman, a renowned anthropologist and ethnographer, relates Smith's personality and career to the radical nature of his investigations. His study contains the only readily available account of Smith's life, and represents the only attempt to place Smith's work within the contemporary perspective of the field of social studies. Professor Beidelman discusses how Smith introduced to Britain the revolutionary interpretations in the fields of biblical and Semitic literary studies first formulated by Continental scholars, as well his original views on the interrelationship between human psychology, social structure, and history. The author also reviews the intellectual background and basic themes of Smith's work, the impact that it had upon his contemporaries, and the later influence that his theories had upon such diverse thinkers as Durkheim, Mauss, Hubert, Frazer, Radcliffe-Brown, Evans-Pritchard, and Freud. In his Lectures on the Religion of the Semites, his last and most famous work, Smith sought to define the essential nature of religious behavior, and he approached the analysis of social institutions through comparative and historical studies. This is a problem that remains central to social anthropology, and the general methods by which Smith endeavored to clarify it are still employed today. Professor Beidelman indicates the ways in which Smith may still be read with profit, and he supplements his study with an extensive bibliography of works by and about this influential thinker.
