Book excerpt: This four-week study examined the effect of using the Accelerated Reader® program with fidelity to the provided framework by Renaissance Place, the parent company of Accelerated Reader, on the reading comprehension scores of third, fourth, and fifth graders who scored below the 25th percentile on their Spring 2017 STAR Reading assessment, or if the student was new to the school their Fall 2017 STAR Reading assessment was used for placement. This study took place in North Dakota with fifteen participants. Students were given fifteen minutes of in class reading time and encouraged to read outside the classroom. Students kept track of their reading during the study. The STAR Reading assessment was given at the beginning and end of the four-week study to determine if the students' Accelerated Reader points earned had a positive effect on their comprehension. The majority of participants showed increased comprehension scores.

Book excerpt: Schools in the United States have been using the Accelerated Reader (AR) program since the mid-1980s. A search of the literature related to the effectiveness of the AR program revealed that many of the studies were conducted more than a decade ago, and a large number of those studies failed to utilize a control group to provide comparative data. Researchers and educators have examined the use of the AR program, whose parent company is Renaissance Learning, for more than 20 years, yet there is still little definitive data on whether the system positively affects student reading comprehension and motivation to read. This causal-comparative design, in the form of an ex post facto study, examined two groups of fifth-grade students to determine if the addition of AR showed statistically significant effects on their reading comprehension. Data were gathered from both an experimental and a control group; the control group utilized the school system's literacy plan for reading instruction, while the experimental group utilized the literacy plan along with mandatory use of AR. Independent t-tests were used to determine if the treatment (AR) had any effect on reading comprehension by group or by gender. The results from the independent t-tests showed no statistically significant effect for reading method by group and no statistically significant effect for gender by group.

A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
