Book excerpt: The effects of U.S. higher education on foreign students from Brazil were investigated in 1982. Attention was directed to: changes in attitudes toward the U.S. and Brazilian economies, and especially economic relations with the United States; ongoing ties of foreign alumni to the United States and to the colleges attended; and the impact of changed social, political, or economic views on the individual. Interviews were conducted with foreign student undergraduates; graduate students of business and management; graduate students in engineering and other technical fields; and doctoral candidates in a range of fields. None of the students regretted having studied in the United States. However, least happy outcomes were reported by undergraduate alumni, and many reported alienation from Brazilian society upon their return. Graduate school alumni had a much more uniformly positive experience. Many Brazilians were positively affected by U.S. business schools' emphasis on problem solving. Graduate engineering alumni felt that U.S. training put them at the cutting-edge of technology. Post-return frustrations emerged in dealing with government regulations and in continuing work in advanced problems. Recommendations for U.S. government, American colleges, and national/international organizations are included. (SW)

Five sections include: (1) general characteristics (gender, age, marital status, family background, and personal goals); (2) selection of institutions (quality considerations, recommendations of others, and financial considerations); enrollments (undergraduates, graduate students, full-time and part-time students, and college age population); (3) enrollments (opening fall enrollment and full-time equivalent counts by type of institution); (4) quality of student and institutional quality (student qualifications and degrees awarded by institutions of varying selectivity); and (5) students' aspirations and types of degrees (life and career goals, school goals, and types of degrees by level). Overall, foreign students are a small factor in American higher education. They are more similar to, than different from, American students in many respects. The tuition they pay in public institutions more closely reflects actual costs than what is paid by domestic students, and they often fill empty seats not sought by Americans. The impact of foreign students on American higher education is minute (in 1982, 22,631 bachelor's degrees went to foreign students and 924,246 went to citizens). Book excerpt: Abstract: The impact of international students and skilled immigration in the United States on innovative activity is estimated using a model of idea generation. In the main specification a system of three equations is estimated, where dependent variables are total patent applications, patents awarded to U.S. universities, and patents awarded to other U.S. entities, each scaled by the domestic labor force. Results indicate that both international graduate students and skilled immigrants have a significant and positive impact on future patent applications, as well as on future patents awarded to university and nonuniversity institutions. The central estimates suggest that a 10 percent increase in the number of foreign graduate students would raise patent applications by 4.7 percent, university patent grants by 5.3 percent, and nonuniversity patent grants by 6.7 percent. Thus, reductions in foreign graduate students from visa restrictions could significantly reduce U.S. innovative activity. Increases in skilled immigration also have a positive, but smaller, impact on patenting.

Recruitment efforts at American universities show that China continues to be targeted by admissions and international enrollment management teams. By prioritizing Chinese nationals, a lack of international student diversity on university campuses in the United States results. The purpose of this qualitative study was threefold: to examine international student diversity at Northeastern University-Seattle; to gain an understanding of the academic and social experiences of Chinese international graduate students; to determine if and how international student diversity impacts the academic and social experiences of this population. This phenomenological qualitative study involved interviews with six Chinese international students to understand their academic and social experiences and the role diversity played in those experiences. The results suggested that Chinese international students at Northeastern University-Seattle 1) believe that diversity exists on campus, 2) find communicating in English to be a constant challenge in academic and social environments, and 3) are satisfied with the accessibility/approachability of faculty and advisors. The findings revealed that international student diversity does not influence the academic and social experiences of Chinese international students, but language diversity does. These findings can benefit administrators, faculty, staff, and advisors who work closely with this population, as well as recruitment and international enrollment management teams who recruit Chinese international students"--Author's abstract.
